Dr. Seuss Dr. Seuss

Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Lorax with sound clips and images.
Franchise: Dr. Seuss

The Lorax is the self-proclaimed guardian of the Truffula Forest and its inhabitants. He often speaks on the behalf of the trees due to their incapability of speech. When the Once-ler begins chopping down the Truffula Trees to begin his Thneed industry, the Lorax is forced to vacate the forest animals from their homes and ineffectually warns the Once-ler of the consequences of his destructive business practices until the last Truffula Tree is downed and the Lorax himself is forced to leave.

Holt voices the part of a determined but ultimately ineffectual elder well enough, and the voice itself is fairly specific to the character. While DeVito's gruffer performance sort of fits the character (particularly during his short "you have been warned" speech where he sounds more convincingly like a guardian of the forest), it's pretty easy to tell that it's DeVito speaking rather than the Lorax. My opinion's leaning toward Holt here.

No disrespect to Bob Holt here, but the book described that Lorax as speaking with a voice "that was sharpish and bossy". And I think DeVito nailed that perfectly while also still having his soft-spoken moments, particularly around the second half of the movie.

Bob Holt's performance as the Lorax is very wise and elderly sounding, making him sound earnest and endearing, so I feel it's substantially more fitting myself.

Danny DeVito's take is admittedly a *lot* of fun to listen to, but I just feel it's more abrasive and aggressive than the Lorax should sound.

I honestly cannot choose. Tie.

DeVito looks the most like him in real life but I am inclined to agree with the others about Holt's vice being better.

To be honest, when I read the book I imagined the Lorax speaking with a quiet British accent.

I can't decide. Both do a good job.

I'm not impartial to reimaginings of characters, but I prefer Holt in this case. DeVito as the Lorax is rather... ...discomforting.

I think both voice fit the character's appearance, but I'd imagine Holt's voice when reading the book by Seuss more than Danny DeVito's voice.

In fairness, though DeVito is basically playing himself, he at least has the decency to recognize that there's more to VO than phoning it in a la Chris Rock.

Both fit their characters well in their respective films, though I think Holt had more of a performance behind his voice, wheres DeVito is just being... Danny DeVito!

Holt is much better. I view the Loraz as a gentler, kinder character than the way that DeVito (who I also like a great deal) played him.

I felt DeVito was just a huge miscast, Holt just feels right for the role.
