"By the light -- By the Truth -- By Sangreal and sword and Pendragon's Fire -- By Defender's might and Dragon Circle's destiny -- BEHOLD THY BANE!!!"

Doctor Strange is one of my favourite Superheroes, managing to be a perfect balance of Wise Dignity and Flamboyant Eccentricity.... That and he has the Most Magnifiecent Superhero cape in Exsistence.......

Sooooo..... Here are my Top 5 Favourite Doctor Strange Voices:

5. Rick Pasqualone
4. John Vernon
3. Liam O'Brien/ Bryce Johnson
2. Maurice LaMarche
1. James Horan

Future VA Suggetions:

Oliver Wyman would be Excellent as Doctor Strange, provided he used a similar voice to his Rex Goodwin or Alexander The Great voices (both Intellectual voices with Power Presence)

I also believe Tony Goldwyn would be solid as "Mr. Doctor", using a Smoother and More Academic Version of his Tarzan Voice.

I also recommend Bruce Greenwood, Christopher Sabat, Sasha Roiz and Garry Chalk.

If I picked my three personal faves for Doctor Strange, it'd be this:

1. Rick Pasqualone: Ever since I heard his voice as Doctor Strange in UMVC3, not only was it the first time I was introduced to Doctor Strange, but his portrayal of the character made me immediately fascinated and made want to learn more of Doctor Stephen Strange.

Mr. Pasqualone brought quite a bit of energy into his performance since it was a fighting game, but also nailed the spells and his bit of arrogant personality and when he's some of flirting with the female characters.

"I've heard the Doctor Strangelove jokes... I'm not amused."

"He Who Sleeps But Shall Awake... sleeps once again."

"Been wanting to do that even back when we were Defenders."

These were some of my favorite quotes he said and I believe Rick Pasqualone captured everything trait of the character and it's a shame he never got to reprise the character again...

Hopefully in MVC Infinite, he might come back to voice him if the character does return but I sadly doubt it.

2. Maurice LaMarche: I know it's him doing his best Vincent Price impression but, thought i t suited the character of Doctor Strange. I enjoyed his performance in that episode of Hulk: The Animated Series called "Mind Over Anti-Matter." Check it out! It's a pretty cool episode!

Back to Mr. LaMarche, he's an iconic voice actor and his performance as the Sorcerer Supreme was no exception.

It may not be one of his recognizable roles like the Brain, Inspector Gadget or Mr. Freeze, but it's one of my personal faves he's ever done.

3. Liam O'Brien: Even though Mr. O'Brien also voiced Red Skull in Avengers Assemble, his performance as Doctor Strange actually surprised on how good it was.

He nailed the sophisticated yet confident personality and summoning the spells of Doctor Strange. It may not be the perfect performance to me, but it's definitely the most surprising.

If Mr. O'Brien continues to voice Doctor Strange in future projects like MVC Infinite, I'm cool with it.

There you go. Those are my three personal fave performances of Doctor Strange.

Given the recent movie that came out (which was pretty good, I'd recommend it), felt it was proper to look at this guy's VC before the cartoon series casts a talented VA doing a Cumberbatch sound-alike.

To me, there are only 4 VAs worth looking at here: James Horan, Maurice LaMarche, Liam O'Brien, and Rick Pasqualone, and I'd rank them like so:

1. Rick Pasqualone: posh and a bit sing-songy, but is arrogant and commanding.
2. James Horan: I feel the deeper voice is too commanding, but gets the personality down.
3. Liam O'Brien: Liam is great at playing complex, tortured, and arrogant characters but his baritone for Dr. Strange makes him sound too grave.
4. Maurice LaMarche: Sounds a little too old. I guess it might be an older one? Great performance but didn't click with me as much as the others.

I can't decide between LaMarche or Horan... But if Cumberbatch voices the character in any shape or form, expect him to dominate :P

Otherwise... I'd like the ever so underrated John Rafter Lee to have a shot as Doctor Strange.

James Horan - An underrated voice actor who deserves more credit for his work, and his voice as the Doctor is one such demonstration of his talent and credibility. A lawful, authoritarian tone for a master of the mystic arts.

Maurice LaMarche - Similar to James Horan's, but somewhat more conventional, like if Vincent Price played the character. (Actually, wouldn't that be something they accomplished back in the 60's/70's.)

Jack Coleman - A bit over the top and somewhat too bombastic for the character. It's not a bad voice over, but it is rather in your face.

Liam O'Brien - Somehow I knew they'd re-cast the character to emulate Benedict Cumberbatch. (I could be wrong though, and that Liam substituted for Jack Coleman, but I like to think it was the former endeavor.) To be fair though, in consequence, Liam's voice also emulates James and Maurice, though slightly younger, cleaner and more conventional of course (Again, which may be to match Cumberbatch). Either direction they were going, he did pretty good. (I'm honestly surprised they didn't use Troy Baker XP)

Rick Pasuqlone - Too vulgar, too conventional, and the performance is way off course from the character, sort of the same problem I have with Jack really. I get they'd wanna make him sound more imposing, but that anachronistic attitude just doesn't sit right with me. It's not a bad voice though.

The others like Chris Cox Nick Jamieson, and Bryce Johnson are fine, but there isn't really a whole lot for me to talk about (Though Nick could use more work)

For more comical takes on the character, Wally Wingert is alright, but Roger Rose's performance is certainly more hands down.

BONUS: Type casting they may be, I wouldn't mind hearing Corey Burton or Jeff Bennett take a crack at the character, I can also see Richard Epcar using his Raiden voice as a good analog for this character. Even Rick D. Wasserman, or Dwight Schultz. I think they'd each make a good Doctor Strange in their own rights.

@Troodon2 I also think Neil Kaplan, JB Blanc, and even John Dimaggio would be good picks. (Forgot to mention these guys)

I still have yet to hear the perfect Doctor Strange but Liam is closest. He has a deep and calm voice I can associate with a doctor but his voice as a certain "oddness" I think works for his "strange" part, if that makes sense.

Liam O'Brien.... I can't help but feel he reminds me of some one else... someone who's very... Smaugy...

Bill Woodson (incorrectly listed as John Stephenson) does a pretty good job at sounding like an experienced mystic, despite limited material. Really nice how he differentiates his Namor and Strange voices (both characters appeared in the same episode) while still retaining his unique delivery.

Maurice LaMarche is also pretty boss in the role. I really love his foreboding tone and calm delivery.

Nick Jameson also manages to sound like an experienced mystic. His voice and delivery are absolutely fitting.

James Horan also sounds boss as Strange. He does sound mystical yet he also adds a bit of an authoritative tone to his delivery.

Rick Pasqualone does fit Strange pretty well. He does nail the mystical sound, but he also adds a more smug tone which I find really amusing.

John Vernon, Bryce Johnson, Liam O'Brien, Chris Cox and Jack Coleman also deliver fitting performances.

Roger Rose and the UVA are okay, but kinda forgettable.

@Troodon2 To be fair, that's their MO for pretty much any character at this point. Change their voice, design and/or personality to better emulate the live-action appearance.

I'd say that, at a very minimum, expect to see the USM/AA/SMASH Jack Coleman Doctor Strange to be sporting a new "Benedict-y" design next time he appears.
said at 4:27 AM on Tue Jan 5 2016
@TylerMirage They didn't do that with Falcon, as far as I know
TylerMirage (Admin)
said at 7:00 PM on Tue Jan 5 2016
@TheVengeanceKnight Which I think is the most surprising, because AA Falcon's outfit (or at least the season 1 outfit) was the most "gharishly comic book spandex" of them all. Yet HE hasn't had an MCU-influenced costume change.

But considering that a craptonne of the USM/AA/SMASH/GOTG characters are either designed from the get-go or had updated designs to better reflect the MCU appearances, that's why I'm saying it wouldn't surprise me if Strange got a haircut/slightly altered costume next time he appears.

@TylerMirage Not necessarily live-action but they did that with Knuckles in Sonic Boom.

 3 Shout Outs!
1. James Horan
There's just this mystic aura in his voice that I love. I totally buy Horan as wise and powerful sorcerer. IMO this is James Horan's best performance to date.

2. Maurice LaMarche
While this might not be Maurice's best perfomance, it is arguably one of his most unique ones. Kinda interesting mix of his Brain and Vincent Price. Whatever it is, it fits very well to Doctor Strange and gives the character mysterious presence. He loses some points for feeling little bit too much like caricature rather than human being, but it isn't bad enough to distract too much from the great performance.

3. John Vernon
Like Horan and LaMarche, Vernon also has very mysterious feel to him and his calm delivery fits the character. Sometimes he feels little clunky, but I blame the bad voice directing of Spider-Man: TAS for that.

4. Jack Coleman
Once again, I have to give credit where it's due. Coleman is one of the best casting choices in Loebverse. Compared to actors above him, Coleman is more aggressive take on the character, but he doesn't go too over-the-top with it and the character is portrayed as the authority when it comes to supernatural threats, so it works.

5. Bryce Johnson
It's hard to compare Johnson to everyone else here, since he is only one playing Strange in the begining of his career, so he lacks most of the elements that make Doctor Strange who he is, but that kinda is the point of his take on the character and the whole movie. In the end, I give him credit for giving extremely good performance and being the most human take on the character to date.

6. Rick Pasqualone
I like his voice and I'm sure that with better material he could work, but for now... yeah he doesn't feel like Doctor Strange at all. Granted, MvsC is fighting game and it doesn't even have a proper story mode, so naturally his performance is going to be more action heavy, but it still doesn't fit the character.

7. Chris Cox
Chris has all the same basic problems that Rick had, but even worse. Like Rick, I'm sure that he could work under better circumstances.

8. John Stephenson
Third actor in a row, who could have done better. John simply is really monotone and doesn't leave strong impact in any way.

9. Nick Jameson
Nothing personal to Nick, but his voice is really annoying. It's just too nasally for my taste.

10. Roger Rose
I can see where they were going. He is kinda playing a parody of the character, so he is very theatrical and in over-the-top. For what it is, it gets the job done, but I don't personally care much for it.

11. Unknown Voice Actor
There's really nothing Doctor Strange about him. He could use this same voice for any character and no one would notice a thing.

Honestly. after rewatching the movie I'd say Bryce is my favorite. He get's the right deepness in his voice and his tone and performance I feel work best of all of the actors at sounding both like the wise sorcerer and the jerkish surgeon he was before (though in fairness it does help that he's the only one who got to do so). I kind of hope in the future Marvel brings him back to voice Strange again for at a point later in Strange's career so we can get more of him after he reached his potential.
said at 12:11 PM on Sat Jul 5 2014
My favourite here is James with Maurice 2nd since they are the wisest ones here.

Bryce was wonderful so he's 3rd.

John V had a nice soft tone for Strange that makes him sound warm hearted which I quite like.

Jack is pretty good too as I have been enjoying his voice in the recent Marvel cartoons.

Roger was good though a bit rough at times.

John S gets my respect for being Strange's 1st VA which isn't easy, he's done not too I'd say.

Chris, Rick & The Unknown Voice Actor are all average.

Nick is terrible as I can barely make out a word of what he's saying & when I can make it out, it sounds forced.
