Blue Beetle / Jaime Reyes

Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Blue Beetle / Jaime Reyes with sound clips and images.
Franchise: DC Universe

Jaime Reyes is the third individual to become the Blue Beetle whom made his Comic Book debut in Infinite Crisis #3 back in February of 2006. Jaime Reyes is a Hispanic teenage boy from El Paso Texas and short after he became the new Blue Beetle he got to work with known superheroes such as Batman and Booster Gold. Jaime has had a tendency to bicker with the Blue Beetle Scarab as Jaimes doesn't always have the best sense of control over his suit but over the years Jaime has bonded with the Blue Beetle Scarab more & more. Blue Beetle/Jaime Reyes has been a member of Teen Titans and the Justice League and while he normally loves being a super hero he still tries to make time for his beloved family back in El Paso Texas.

Alright folks today on the DC Universe VC section we take a look at Jaime Reyes as the third... BLUE BEETLE! Let us begin...

Will Friedle- Will's voice for the role may've been pretty much his Ron Stoppable voice but Will still does a pretty good job in making it work. Will's performance as Blue Beetle was very good as he played Jaime as a naive but well meaning young man whom greatly aspires to be a hero. Its a pretty good example of Will's work and a good example of the voice work on the show.

Eric Lopez-  Eric's voice for the role definitely felt natural right from the start (though the fact that Eric has a Mexican accent does certainly help). Eric's performance for the role is very good as it does suit Blue Beetle's friendly persona pretty well (while suiting the more serious tone for this show). Anyways Eric's VA debut is a pretty good one and its a good example of the voice work on the show.

Overall while both performances are good I will slightly go with Eric a bit more mainly because I like his voice for the role a bit more.

You know upon reflection and with the extra material he's been getting lately, I might change my vote to either Jake somewhere down the line as he is closer to how I imagine Jaime sounded than Eric.

Eric is still good; but when compared to the other two, I feel the youthfulness is a little forced and the accent feels a little exaggerated. If he used something similar to his Mark Allan voice from SSM I think it would work better. He was nonetheless one of the better aspects of Invasion IMO.

Antony pretty good. He has a good amount of energy and youthfulness along with an accent, but there's something a little off that I just can't place my finger on. Maybe I just need to get used to it more.

My thoughts on Will haven't changed. Good performance but he's essentially playing his usual young hero type.

Geez, Antony is perfect in this role. He's got the energy of Will, the natural young voice of Jake, and a slight accent like Eric.

Yeah, I think he's the best.

Del Rio did a fantastic job. He really sells Jamie's enthusiasm and wit. I think he's tied with Will as my favorite.

I'm going with Pit, he captures the personality of a young hero but can still be taken seriously when needed and the effects help it be a little more distinct from Anthony's other roles. Plus he shows off Jaime's Hispanic heritage naturally, it's not too exaggerated and in your face nor does it feel like it was neglected.

I hope Antony Del Rio will be added here soon. Cause he'll definitely get my vote! I always imagined he could voice Blue Beetle and he did NOT disappoint!

He was everything I hoped he'd be as the characters and nailed him perfectly! He captured all the energy, enthusiasm, and innocence that Jaime Reyes is known for and speaking Spanish to boot.

In my opinion, Antony Del Rio is my fave and the best Blue Beetle so far by a landslide!

Man never would i picture the voice of Pit to be doing Blue beetle. he makes Jaime sound funny, innocent, naive, quippy, and he even sounded (not surprisingly) like a teenager. so much energy he brought to the role and he just might be my favorite voice for Jaime.

Eric Lopez is great as Blue beetle in Young Justice

Although my vote went to Jake T Austin i feel like with his performance in Justice League action and Judas Contact he made the role his own

Friedle has a great amount of energy in the role, and his comedic delivery is just as good as ever. Though I feel at times I hear Ron Stoppable a bit too much in the performance, which isn't a bad thing, it's just kind of distracting at points.

Eric is also really good. He could balance comedic with dramatic very well, especially in those last few episodes of season 2. Though I feel at times I think he could've done a couple more takes since some lines sound really flat or kind of awkward at times.

I think Jake finds a good balance here. He can be calm when he needs to and can really nail the comedic delivery and charm at the same time. I think he really improved in Action over JL vs. Teen Titans, and even then there he wasn't bad, just another average performance.

1. Jake T. Austin
2. Will Friedle
3. Eric Lopez.

I'd say for a future VA, Antony Del Rio or Daryl Sabara

Jaime Reyes is the Perfect Balance between Relatable and KICK-ASS !!!

At least in My Personal Opinion...

Anyway, Here is my Personal Ranking of His Voices:

2. Will Friedle/ Jake T Austin (Justice League Action > Justice League vs. Teen Titans)
1. Eric Lopez

Future VA Suggestions:

I think Milo Ventimiglia would actually be Quite Solid as Jaime Reyes. His voice would be perfect for both his fun loving personality and his subtle maturity.

Robbie Daymond would also be very good as well, doing a Hispanic accented version of his Mamoru Chiba voice.

I also recommend Adrian Petriw, Justin Cook, Nathan Parsons and Joshua Gomez.

I have to with Eric. Will and Jake are good for what they are, but there's plenty of teen heroes that their voices could work for. Eric Lopez has a very distinct rasp, and he captured Jaime's internal struggle with the scarab perfectly. A nice touch to his voice is that when the scarab controls jaime, his voice changes to be higher and without an accent. Brilliant stuff, one of the best voices to come from Young Justice for sure.

I thought Jake was pretty good in Justice League vs Teen Titans, but something about the way Jaime was written in the movie bugged me (he didn't get a lot of focus in the first place, but still). In JLA, though, he's near-pefect- full of youthful energy and good comic timing. I'd like to see him tackle slightly more serious fare to make his take more well-rounded, but of he does well in that, then he's easily got my vote.

Until then, I'm sticking with Eric. He had a lot of meaty, well-written material to work with, and his and it shows in his performance. He made Jaime feel grounded, and that's a quality I appreciate in a lot of dramatic performances.

VC thoughts update

I really enjoy Jake T. Austin the most in the role. His energy is great and I really enjoyed his interactions with Kevin Conroy's Batman. Overall, he fits the role quite well.

Eric Lopez is also pretty good. Only problem is that the accent is a little bit exaggerated. Still, not bad.

Will Friedle is fun. Just another good fit for the role.

Jake is pretty good, he is a natural fit for Blue Beetle. He sounds like the right age, has good energy and just works really well. I wasn't a big fan of him in Teen Titans vs Justice League but he improved greatly in JLA.

I also like Will, not a new voice from him or anything but I enjoyed his take.

I just don't really like Eric's take, feels too raspy and exaggerated sometimes.

1# Eric Lopez: Invasion may have been a mixed bag for me but one of its best aspects was Blue Beetle. I admit that Eric is a bit raspy but he gets down the accent, energy, youthfulness, and personality for Jaime and he was able to make the conversations with his Scarab feel natural. Nice to see that he was able to return for Infinite Crisis.

2# Jake T. Austin: Whilst not up here yet, he has the accent, youthfulness, and personality down perfectly. I do admit that he lacks some of the energy of Eric's take but he shows a great deal of promise and I look forward to seeing more of him.

3# Will Friedle: I'm probably going to get burned for this, but let me explain. Will does a great job; he has a great lot of energy and personality. The problem is however (this is just a personal thing), when I listen to his take I'm not hearing Blue Beetle I'm hearing Will. Maybe it's because I've become very familiar with his work or because he didn't use an accent to make himself sound different. He still does a good job.

BONUS: I'd like to see Eric Bauza have a go at Blue Beetle, because why not?

@GothamRed I never really watched Kim Possible, so I wouldn't know. =P
said at 3:42 PM on Mon May 7 2012
@GothamRed It's his normal voice. He always uses it for his voice work though sometime it's serious, sometimes it's funny. For Terry Mcginnis he used a bit of both. If you're familiar with him from his sitcom days you would know that
said at 3:44 PM on Mon May 7 2012
@TheVengeanceKnight I've seen mainly promos and commercials with it though I did it watch it occasionally once with my cousins.
said at 7:05 PM on Mon May 7 2012
@pete yup, I know, big fan of boy meets world, but his normal voice is actually closer to terry's speaking voice, the more high pitched jaime voice was really more the voice he grew into when voicing ron more than his normal voice
said at 3:18 AM on Tue May 8 2012
@pete I caught a few episodes, but that was before I started paying close attention to voices, let alone caring about voice actors and knowing who Will Friedle was, LOL.
