Amanda Waller

Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Amanda Waller with sound clips and images.
Franchise: DC Universe

Amanda Waller is a known foe (though occasional ally) of the Justice League whom made her comic book debut in Legends #1 in November of 1986. Amanda Blake Waller is a US Government agent whom has worked with several government agencies (which are very shady and either evil or VERY morally ambiguous). Amanda is well known as a strong-mannered woman (whose temperament does slightly differ in the storyline we are talking about here) and is almost always overweight (but whether she is mildly or very obese depends on the depiction) but she is always known as someone whom has no super powers but is a very brilliant strategist. While Amanda is generally depicted as an antagonist whenever she is involved in a story there will most likely be a lot of moral ambiguity in the story in which one of her most most (but not necessarily trusted) allies is none other than Lex Luthor

Today on the DC Universe VC section we take a look at this fairly infamous US Government Agent... AMANDA WALLER! Let us take a look here shall we?

CCH Pounder- CCH's voice and performance for the role was very suiting and felt very natural as well. CCH's voice work on the role suits Amanda's strong nature very well as it does work with how much of a highly morally ambiguous antagonist she is in the show (though I also liked on how her sense of character in the show over the course of the series). Anyways it is a fine example of CCH's voice work and of the voice work in the show.

Debra Cole- Debra's voice for the role is... okay, its not bad but its a bit too light for the role here. Though to be fair Debra's performance does suit Amanda's strong-mannered persona pretty well and is a fairly above average performance in general.

Sheryl Lee Ralph- Sheryl's voice and performance were also very suiting for the role as it suited her very strong and hard-natured persona rather well. (Which works well especially considering the fact that in this show she is a Warden of a Super-Villain prison.) Even though Amanda Waller has a smaller role in this show than on JLU, Sheryl's overall voice work here definitely suited the role rather well.

Overall I am going with CCH and Sheryl the most with Debra at a decent second.

"I'm not proud of what I had to do -- but I would do it again. You all quit, you all die, I can still guarantee you one thing -- The Squad WILL go on. "

Not Much to say, Here are my Top 5 Favourite Amanda Waller Voices:

5. Cynthia Addai Robinson
4. Yvette Nicole Brown
3. Sheryl Lee Ralph
2. Penny Johnson Jerald
1. CCH Pounder

Future VA Suggestions:

Having watched some of The Luke Cage Netflix series, I think Alfre Woodard would be excellent as Amanda Waller, bringing out all the nuances in her character.

Susan Dalian would also be excellent as Waller, using a brusquer, Chicago accented version of her Storm voice.

I also recommend Kirsten Williamson, Audra McDonald, Debbi Morgan and Maura Gale.

VC thoughts update

CCH Pounder's voice may be lighter than people might think of Waller, but I think she has the proper commanding presence and her delivery is really solid. She definitely made Waller come to life.

Cynthia Addai Robinson is also pretty good. I find her delivery to be pretty enjoyable and her attitude is pretty amusing.

Sheryl Lee Ralph is the kind of voice that would come up to someone who sees Waller's design. She's pretty good, but she lacks CCH's bite and her delivery could be quite awkward at times.

Debra Cole does sound pretty cool. However, like Sheryl, her delivery can get awkward at times.

Penny Johnson Gerald is also pretty cool, but she doesn't leave a big impression on me.

Yvette Nicole Brown sounds a little bit too nice.

Yvette Nicole Brown has the potential but lacks any bite to her performance.

Slightly unrelated but I'd rather disappointed with current portrayals of Waller. I loved that Waller didn't have the typical figure we see but was still an important character.

@Music Meister I have to agree I think the standard was set so high with CCH Pounder & Sheryl Lee Ralph & no one else has really quite captured the character like they have.

CCH is fantastic. She's intimidating and every line just sounds like she's taking absolutely everything she says 100% seriously. This is a performance where at any moment she just sounds like she could pull a gun out and shoot you in the head for not agreeing with her. One of the best performances in Justice League.

Sheryl is also really good. She has the initimidating sound and her delivery is also well done too. I'd say it's close to being on par with CCH, just another great performance from Young Justice.

Debra sounds authoritative, but it sounds way too light and her delivery is a bit too robotic to me I feel. Just a kind of bland performance with nothing standout about it.

Cynthia is almost exactly like Debra I feel. Honestly there isn't that much to say, she has a lot of the same problems as Debra but I feel her delivery has the problem of just sounding really uninterested.

Penny is a little light, but she's good for what she had. Nothing amazing but she gets the job done, her delivery is fine, which I guess is the word I'd say to describe the performance, 'fine.'

1. CCH Pounder
2. Sheryl Lee Ralph
3. Penny Johnson Jerald
4. Cynthia Addai Robinson
5. Debra Cole

I'd say for a future VA, honestly, I'd love to see Whoopi Goldberg try it. It'd be nice to see her stretch her range and do a more serious VO role.

Really enjoyed CCH Pounder, especially in that episode where she talks to Terry about being Bruce's son genetically and his successor as Batman.

Sheryl is really good.

Debra is okay.

Cynthia is a bit light to me.

Without bias:
1. Cynthia Addai Robinson is the best voice according my taste. The most aggressive and threatening.
2. Sheryl Lee Ralph. The confident and commanding voice.
3. Debra Cole. Not bad.
4. CCH Pounder. Too soft and soulful.

I'd say:
1. Pounder - Great mix of frankness and feistiness with a very strong delivery.
2. Ralph - A bit tougher, but she works almost as well.
3. Cole - A tad dull, but not too bad.
4. Robinson - Way too young and feminine sounding.

CCH Pounder is best voice for Amanda Walker in my opinion as she fits the character perfectly.

Sheryl is a close 2nd in my mind.

Cynthia sounds alright. I've not watched the Arrow live action tv series but from what I'm hearing, she's a lot better in the actual show itself.

Debra sounds rather dull.

Cynthia Addai Robinson voice for Waller in Arrow is great, makes me think she has great potential in voice acting.

She sounds a little different in Lego a Batman since she's just narrating and directing the gamer on what to do.

Addai-Robinson makes a better voice for Waller than a live-action one, IMO.

So thats what Waller is like in Arrow, she is decent but she lacks the weight or power that CCH and Sheryl had and comes off as more grumpy than a no nonsense woman in charge.
said at 8:08 PM on Sun Apr 19 2015
@Music Meister - Being fair, that might have to do with the Lego writing. Whether she acts differently on Arrow is obviously another matter

I don't agree with the writing holding her back. If the LEGO game wrote the character overly comical so much that it missed the character's purpose (which has happen before) I'd agree but they wrote Waller pretty straight and even the puns she drops are pretty in line to something Waller would.
But I guess I assumed too much in thinking Lego Batman 3 Waller would the same as Arrow Waller.
said at 7:03 AM on Mon Apr 20 2015
@Music Meister I don't know, I dont think Waller would make that moth pun. That was odd. I didn't get the impression that she was grumpy but if she was I don't blame her, imagine having to deal with the likes of Harley Quinn every day!

It's hard, as I still read the character with CCH's voice, but I'll give it too Sheryl. She adds more balls to the character.

Though in recent days, I've really come to love Cynthia Addai-Robinson's portrayal in Arrow.
