Happy Halloween everyone! Today we shall have a Castlevania VC tonight and this time it shall be for the god of death and Dracula's eternal "BFF" sort to speak namely the Grim Reaper or as he is often known in this series as Death.

1. Tie for Tom Wyner (Curse of Darkness) and Patrick Seitz
2. Tie for Tom Wyner (Lament of Innocence) and Patrick Stewart
3. Judgment
4. David Lodge
5. Dennis Falt

I liked them all for the most part however none of them seemed to be truly prefect for the role but overall like I said before I do like the 2nd Tom Wyner voice and Patrick Seitz Death voices the most here.

Tom Wyner's performance in Lament of Innocence wins for me. He has that deep, powerful yet whispery voice that gives Death a menacing, over-worldly presence. He comes off as naturally intimidating without sounding forced.
His Curse of Darkness voice was so muffed by effects I can hardly hear it, but it was fine.

Dennis Falt comes closest to Tom for me, as he has a whispery and raspy voice that comes off naturally intimidating.

The rest from Douglas to David give pretty cool performances, but feel like they're trying a bit too hard to sound intimating.

1. Tom Wyner (Lament of Innocence)
2. Dennis Falt
3. Douglas Rye
4. Patrick Seitz
5. Patrick Stuart

Dennis Falt - Despite how legendarily bad this game's voice acting is, I thought Dennis pulled had a pretty solid performance, and the effects on his voice make him sound otherworldly and badass, as the incarnation of Death should.

Tom Wyner (03) - He's pretty good in his first appearance, but in the second game he's in the effects on his voice were WAYYYYYYY too heavy that time; I can barely understand what he's saying in that clip.

Travis Willingham - I didn't really think much of him in Symphony of the Night, but I quite liked his performance in Judgment; he sounds pretty cool and has a lot more personality that time around.

David Lodge - Most of the time, he's drowned out by the music and sound effects and whenever he's not, the effects on his voice are too thick for me to understand anyway.

Patrick Stewart - That's Patrick Stewart, all right. XD I enjoy him as an actor, but I don't think his voice fits for this particular character. He at least sounded like he was having fun, though.

Dennis Falt, Tom Wyner (LoI) and Travis Willingham (Judgement) are my favourite voices for The Grim Reaper!

Also, who was it who voiced him in PoR again? Because I also rather liked that performance! (Travis Willingham again, possibly?)

@HylianBelmont Or Douglas Rye's performance is the one in Judgement I rather liked, it would seem!

I'm pretty sure that Death in Judgment is Kirk Thornton, not Travis Willingham, which would also explain the completely different voice.

That being said, Tom Wyner (LoI) definitely gets my vote.

I felt like revisiting this compare for an updated comment.

Dennis Falt - I love this performance. I seriously don't see how it could be considered the worst of the bunch. It's a nice creepy, raspy voice that perfectly matches the character's personality, and his acting is perfect for the character. He's my favorite.

Tom Wyner - His deep, booming, gravelly voice is absolutely marvelous to listen to and he's another perfect match for the character. His performance is over-the-top and grandiose but not to the point where it's silly, he's just a darn good match for a powerful, malevolent supernatural being.

Patrick Stewart - While not as quite as distinct as the first two, his rich, regal voice and passionate acting here is really entertaining and fitting in it's own way. He's putting so much energy and effort into his performance that it's impossible for me to dislike him here. He's one celebrity actor who gives his 100% percent to his voice-acting work, and he gets mad respect from me for that.

Travis Willingham - I must say, I didn't like this performance much at all when I first heard it and I felt he was getting more votes than the others just because he's a more popular VA than most of these guys, but listening to it now it's not too bad. He's a little more boring to listen to and I don't think the voice he used in the SOTN redub was very special or unique, but his acting itself is still fun and kinda hammy, while still making Death sound like a threat. From what I can tell with his Judgement take, he changed his voice to sound a little more specific to the character. But the sound effects and music are so loud that I can't hear the voice he's using that well. Still, I think he did a decent job. I wish I could hear what he sounds like in Judgement better.

David Lodge - I'll say it once again, he could have have been amazing in the role. David has an excellent deep and gruff voice in many of his roles that would have been perfect for this character, and he has a good amount of range outside of that where he could have done something remarkable for Death. The fact that he got to play the character and this was all he was able to do with it is a major disappointment. Although, for another performance buried underneath a lot of noise it's still not bad, just nothing special.

Stewart's voice stands out like a sore thumb from the rest. The other voices are deep and demonic while he sounds like normal person. Not saying that he is bad, just that he is different.

@The Doctor There is a reason for that, but it's a bit of a spoiler if you haven't played the game.

@NCZ I've never played it either, would you recommend it? It looks cool, but I don't know how it compares to other hack and slash games.

@PsychicVoiceSpy I actually have not played it myself, I just know that particular plot detail.

I can't recommend it personally, but I will say that the first game did receive some surprisingly good reviews. The westernization may be controversial among some fans, but if you enjoy the Castlevania series and you can find it for cheap, give it a shot. I've heard very mixed things about the latter two LoS games, though. They're generally agreed to be weaker than the first one.

@NCZ Cool. It's probably dirt cheap by now, so maybe I'll snag a copy off of amazon sometime.

My favorite is actually Dennis Falt, sure it's a little hammy, but it sounds like he had fun and it's still a great performance. My second place is Tom Wyner for his Lament of Innocence performance.

Here's one thing that bugs my though... David Lodge would have been absolutely perfect for this role! Anyone who's heard his real voice knows how well he could do it, but instead of getting to be the creepy and malevolent one from SOTN he had to say a few stupid generic fighting lines with his brilliant voice hidden behind a ton of crappy filters!? THAT IS ABSURD!!!

David Lodge would have been the absolute best of the bunch had he been cast in the redub of SOTN and when I saw him in the voice compares I was stoked because of how awesome that sounded... then I hit play and saw how the handled the character... what a shame. David Lodge could have been brilliant.

For the actors who've voiced Death more than once, I rate them like this.....

# 1 - Travis Willingham (Judgement version).
# 2 - Tom Wyner (Lament of Innocence version).
# 3 - Tom Wyner (Curse of Darkness version).
# 4 - Travis Willingham (Symphony of the Night, PSP version).

I dunno, I think Dennis Falt actually suits Death most here, despite the bad acting that I've heard from the other characters in that game, he seems to actually have a legit good performance. Very befitting performance for a skeleton.

Props to Travis Willingham though, for being a good replacement in the PSP version. The only thing I don't like about it is the laugh.

@Metabad A lot of people hate the voice acting in the original SotN but I feel they do a darn good job. Falt is actually my favorite Death.

@ninjinister I've never really played it, but from what I heard it seems to be a case of "so bad its good" for the most part (For Dracula and Alucard and such). But I definitely agree that Dennis Falt is for sure the best voice for Death.
said at 4:51 PM on Mon Oct 31 2011
@ninjinister I agree that in the original Symphony of the Night, the character voices actually trump the PSP port's... but not the acting, however.

@Metabad Dude... we're like, long lost brothers. I wasn't crazy about Travis' take though, but he would be my third place.
