James Callis wipes the floor with everyone who's preceded him, IMO. It's a heavier voice than you might expect looking at the character's design across the series, but once you get used to it, it's pretty good.

I'm sure he and the rest of the cast will be much better in season two once they've gotten more situated in their roles.

VC thoughts update

I feel Ian Corlett could pull off a more game accurate representation of the character if given a chance. But as he stands, he is actually pretty hilarious and enjoyable.

Yuri Lowenthal is pretty close to what I imagine Ian doing if he reprised the role. I really like his haunting delivery and his voice fits pretty well.

Despite the deeper voice, Robert Belgrade delivers an incredibly good performance. It's a good example of his work.

James Callis sounds pretty cool. He does have the subdued attitude needed for the character.

Richard Madden is also good, but he doesn't leave a big impression on me.

Anyone else think James Callis sounds almost like Crispin Freeman?
said at 4:57 PM on Tue Jul 11 2017
@Troodon2 A bit like Freeman yes... I was beyond surprised when I heard him do THAT VOICE! Did you hear what he sounds like in real life? He almost sounds like a British version of Matthew Broderick. I expecting a voice similar to Lowenthal's but NOPE! Something completely different.

Ian does a decent job for the particular version of Alucard. Just... not my favourite portrayal of the character.

I can see why people prefer Robert's take, given the character being hundreds of years old, but I still wouldn't imagine such an old voice coming out of a young looking character. His performance however had its merits. It was subdued and calm, and when he raised his voice, it didn't sound forced or over the top.

While I do think Yuri sounds bored in the SOTN redub, in Judgement, I do think he was better. He was subdued, but also subtle and showed more passion. I like how he didn't have to raise his voice to emote well. Plus he sounded more age appropriate in my opinion.

Richard has a nice pitch for Alucard, not too high or deep, his accent also helps him stand out. But I found his performance to be... a little generic? It's honestly hard to say, but I just didn't find it very interesting.

It would be unfair of me to rank James at this time. But I will say it sounds "Good... very good."
Not too young or old sounding. Subdued and distinct. Would like to hear more of him in season 2. :)

1. Yuri
2. Robert
3. Richard
4. Ian

Even though the acting is a bit rough I honestly like listening to Robert Belgrade more in SOTN. Even though he looks youthful, Alucard is immortal and hundreds of years old. Him having a deep voice isn't that unfitting. I also think Robert's voice makes him sound much more solemn as a character. Yuri can do solemn, but in Dracula X he just sounded more bored if anything. That said I haven't played Judgement in years so maybe he sounds better there? I wouldn't know. Honestly I feel like the PSP redub is kind of a lateral shift all around (the acting is still pretty cheesy, just... slightly less so). Even though it's technically worse, the PS1 dub manages to be so OTT pulpy that it has a certain charm to it, so I still have a soft spot for it that the PSP one just kinda misses for me and ends up in this weird limbo.

James Callis showed a ton of promise in season 1 of the Netflix show, even though it was basically just setting up his role for later on. Can't wait to hear more of him in season 2 where he'll be more front-and-centre.

@NCZ Believe me Yuri's Alucard voice sounds Much more fitting in Castlevania: Judgement.

He sounds more ethereal and ageless there.....

1. Yuri Lowenthal:

He has the most age appropriate voice for Alucard and is also capable of emoting in a very sinister, smug, yet also intelligent way.

2. Robert Belgrade:

He also did a pretty good job as Alucard, making him sound really sinister and smug, but his voice is a little bit more adult sounding than that of a teenager.

3. Richard Madden:

He has a pretty cool and intelligent sounding timbre for Alucard (and the accent is a nice touch), but I feel his delivery is a bit too soft at times & he also sounds a little too old to me.

4. Ian James Corlett:

To be fair, at least it's entertaining, and it works for Captain N The Game Master's portrayal of Alucard, but it's not very fitting for anything outside of that- he sounds too much like a chilled out skateboarder otherwise.

I personally like Yuri Lowenthal the best here because his acting is great and his voice is the most fitting for Alucard's appearance. It's one of my favourite roles from him honestly! I also think Richard Madden is pretty good as his respective version of the character.

Now Robert Belgrade's voice is really cool on it's own merits, and it's definitely very iconic too! However. It just sounds......weird coming out of Alucard to me. And his acting was kind of off at times as well (Although I suppose I can't fault him for that one.)

Ian James Corlett is kind of entertaining as the DiC version of Alucard I guess! But I do think it would be pretty nice to hear him play a serious version of the character one day. I mean it more than likely won't happen but hey.

I vote for Yuri Lowenthal, though more for his performance in Castlevania: Judgement.

Richard Madden is solid as an alternate version of Alucard.

Belgrade is miscast ( As Metabad can elaborate below) and Ian James Corllet is SEVERLY misdirected.

@EPA Deane From What I've heard James Callis Sounds kike a Perfected version of Robert Belgrade's Alucard voice to me.

He sounds it sounds smoother, less stilted, not as excessively deep (sounding slightly ethereal) and the British Accent is a solid fit for the Character.....

I'll move him between Yuri Lowenthal and Richard Madden....

People tend to forget that Alucard is physically 18. Robert Belgrade's voice is cool, but let's be honest, he makes Alucard sound like he's much, much older.

@Starscreamsfan I can understand your thoughts behind the Street Fighter and Darkstalkers cartoon characters, but I'm curious as to why you feel Ian Corlett's Alucard was the best.
said at 2:52 PM on Sun Mar 8 2015
@NCZ Well, there's something about him that really appeals to me. I don't know what it really is (could be the surfer personality), but I thought he was really cool.

I wish I could be clearer, but that's the best explanation I have for now (though I think it's because I sense some potential here).
said at 8:30 PM on Tue Mar 10 2015
@Starscreamsfan He was at least fitting for what they were going for in the show, but that's all I really feel I can give it.

But eh, to each their own.

Honestly, I really think Robert Belgrade and Michael G should've switched roles. Belgrade's deep voice I feel is really unfitting and too old sounding for Alucard and could've brought a much more refined deep sound to Dracula, whereas Michael G's higher voice is rather ill fitting for Dracula and the energy he brought to the role definitely would've fit Alucard a lot more. If they traded roles, while they might still not have been perfect, I think they would've fit each other's characters a LOT more than they did their own.

I admit I find Belgrade's deep voice to be jarringly unfitting, especially for that design. I know Alucard's a vampire and as such is ageless, but hearing that voice coming out of someone who looks that young is just...surreal. That said I do enjoy him in the role, but probably for all the wrong reasons. His voice sounds really monotone and clueless in all of his roles and there's something about it that I find so likable. I don't think I can explain why, there's just this certain charm to it for me. Although I see a lot of people saying that Robert Belgrade had the only good performance in that game and truth be told I highly disagree, I think he was completely miscast in the role and after seeing this interview it's obvious to me that he didn't care much for it:

That said though, I'm not gonna tell you what you can and can't enjoy, and oddly enough I think I like him simply because he's so unfitting and monotone in the role, truth be told I do miss him and I hope he comes back to do more voice acting someday.

Yuri Lowenthal is a little on the generic side, but I find him MUCH more fitting, I don't even think he's too young for the role, he sounds just right to me. He brings this nice intellectual tone to Alucard that I think was sorely missing with Robert. Although at first I wasn't too sure which voice was his (I'm not as familiar with his work as I'm sure other people are) so admittedly I originally thought that the second voice was his, at which point I remarked "Hey, he sounds sort of like Michael G's Dracula, that's cool! I had the same idea!" but then I listened to it more closely and realized the first voice was Alucard and was like "oh whoops." Still, I like it. His performance fits Alucard like a glove especially during the more emotional scenes and with much better writing to boot.

I'm not too familiar with Richard Madden's take on the character, but I do like the accent he brings to the role, it makes him stand out and sound really unique amongst the rest of these voices. It also sounds kind of like he has the deepness of Robert's take, with the young intellectual sound of Yuri's take. A very good balance between the two while also sounding distinct and unique enough on his own.

But yeah, anyone saying Robert Belgrade was the worst obviously has not heard Ian James Corlett in the role, which is a shame since he's ordinarily a much better actor than this, but the poor writing and awful characterization turning Alucard into an over the top parody didn't help matters at all.

So overall, my vote goes to Yuri Lowenthal, with Richard Madden as a close second, Robert Belgrade as a miscast but likable third, and Ian James Corlett in a distant, completely unfitting last place.

I have to go with the original Symphony of the Night VA as the best it sounds more interesting and it's not as high pitched as Yuri

Richard is okay not to Robert's level but not high like Yuri is

Yuri sounds miscasted as this guy he sounds too young and normal for a character like him however...

Ian- I AM A SURFER, that's the worst easily

Yuri Lowenthal's acting is a little sharper than Robert Belgrade's, but at the same time, he just sounds way too ordinary and a little too young and casual. Robert may not be great, but his deep voice is more interesting to listen to, he has several very good line deliveries throughout the game, and I can actually hear a genuinely good performance trying to shine through. He also has the problem of being sounding too casual on lines where it sounds like he needs to emote more, but If you listen to the clip objectively, the only thing out of this clip that was truly bad was his awful, stilted script.

"Think you, I would forget such a thing!"

Without that kind of awful dialogue (there's a lot of stilted, poorly written lines like throughout the game) and the poor direction he was probably getting, he probably would have really done the character justice. He does sound like he cares about the performance he's giving here, but his character's script is just awful.

I like both Yuri and Robert, but I'm giving this to Robert because he's a little more unique.

yuri works well as Alucard. Belgrade though the voice fits for and old kind of Alucard too many people complained about his acting and so IGA called for a redub and now Yuri is Alucard. I think Yuri's work since Alucard doesn't age much and his appearance as in younger the voice works. Belgrade makes sound deep and cool but the way he delivered his lines and used the voice is why I don't think it works well nowadays especially with so many new gen gamers getting into castlevania
said at 3:43 AM on Fri Jul 8 2011
@Sonic_Blaze In my opinion I think doing the redub was stupid and it sucked. I think what they should have done was not a redub but upgraded the graphics to 2.5D like they did with Castlevania: Dracula X Chronicles which is a remake to Rondo of Blood. I barely hear people complaining about Belgrade's portrayal of Alucard I hear more people complaining about Yuri's portrayal of Alucard. I personally did not like him voicing Alucard to me all he did was take his Sasuke Uchiha voice from Naurto and Naruto Shippuden and put it in Alucard. You Know that Alucard is only half vampire right? and Symphony of the Night is like 400 years after Castlevania 3. so I don't believe he should be sounding like a 13 or 16 year old. If they are to make a future Castlevania game with Alucard as the main protagonist again...I hope they don't Yuri again. If it were up to me I would get someone like Crispin Freeman to do Alucard's voice he did an excellent job as Mathias Cronqvist in Lament of Innocence and Hector in Curse of Darkness so I would love to see him portray Alucard.

@MaskedKaneBRM *I hope they don't use Yuri again*
said at 3:07 PM on Sat Jul 9 2011
@MaskedKaneBRM but a vampire is like immortal and so their age is more in their younger like years. I prefer Yuri more than Belgrade. But then again bringing up a stupid NAruto reference sickens me. Alucard with Yuri sounds llike he's in his twenties despite being more than 400 yeas old. Belgrade did mediocre at best but It sounded bad to me . Crispin Freeman as Alucard would probably give him a lamer imitation of Belgrads or like Scott McCulloch. It wouldn't fit Alucard it would make him sound older and older as in his 50 to 60's old. The old one Belgrade made ALucard sound older than Dracula. I didn't like that because Alucard is suppose to be like years younger than Drac so it would make more sense to go with a kind of younger voice. I played SOTN back in 97 and Belgrade doesn't fit as alucard to me. probably never will.
said at 3:09 PM on Sat Jul 9 2011
@Sonic_Blaze I don't care if they take out Yuri. Anyone else doing Alucard is better than Belgrade. I hope they never use him as Alucard again
said at 4:56 PM on Wed Oct 12 2011
@Sonic_Blaze I'll be honest and will just have to go with MaskedKaneBRM's statement on this one. Not that I hate Yuri's performance, but a majority of his roles (including this one) all sound just like Sasuke Uchiha from the Naruto franchise... And the more I forget about that, the better! So what with Belgrade sucking and the fact that he has no votes? I found him more tolerable than Lowenthal. Yeah, shoot me down for praising a Japan-residing English voice actor, folks! It'll happen every once and a while.

All and all, if you think Yuri is better, okay. But for me, it's always Robert Belgrade just because of nostalgia... And that voice can still get fangirls' spines tingling, which is what I want because I hate fandom due to how overpopulated that area is.
said at 4:37 PM on Mon Nov 28 2011
@Ninjaman15 it's not that I hate Belgrade I just don't have that same feel I guess. sure it's Belgrade but it's bad to where I can laugh at it some time and he's the only one that stood out in that game but all in all that's what I really meant. I don't get an Alucard vibe. it sounded more Dracula. Yuri isn't perfect either it's like what does Alucard really look like. is he in his twenties thirties? who knows so probably getting his voice we will never know with a being who is cursed as he. ALUCARD!
