Franchise: Captain Planet

Captain Planet is the eponymous hero of the Captain Planet series and is the superhero summoned by the Planeteers. Captain Planet is the guardian of Earth who has a lot of elemental powers alongside the usual superpowers such as flight, super speed and strength (though his weaknesses are various forms of pollution). In order for Captain Planet to appear the Planeteers must use their rings to summon Captain Planet though he only appears to save the Planeteers from the trouble they are in and always disappears whenever he saves the day. Captain Planet is a good old fashioned example of a Super Hero who frequently taunts his foes as he normally uses plenty of puns in every episode but when he is not giving out puns he speaks about the moral of the episode (which is usually but not always related to the environment).

Today on the Captain Planet VC section we take a look at the titular character of the series CAPTAIN PLANET! Let us begin shall we?

David Coburn- Yeah I know say what you will about how preachy the show was and how goofy Captain Planet's puns were but David's work on the role is not bad. David's voice for the role felt pretty natural for the role as his performance does suit a traditional taunting Super Hero and is a good example of the voice work in the show.

Yuri Lowenthal- I understand that Yuri didn't really try to sound like David which is not a bad thing in fact it can be potentially be a good thing but his voice for the role does sound rather odd. However one thing to keep in mind is that unlike the show CP barely had any lines in this game so its not like Yuri had a good amount of material to work with here. But to be fair while Yuri's voice for the role does seem a bit off at least he did a decent job in playing CP as a good old fashioned superhero but this is an okay at best example of Yuri's work.

Overall I am clearly going with David here as Yuri was okay but his work on the role could've been a lot better.

Am I the only one who had my memory jogged just looking at him? Considering he had the most memorable design of everyone(the only other characters I could remember are Gaia and Dr Blight)

They are both great though David is the original and 'THE POWER IS YOURS'

Daivd Coburn is cheesy sometimes, but it works perfectly considering Captain Planet himself is pretty much that.

Yuri Lowenthal...he's okay, but a little generic.

For what he had to work with, David Coburn did a good job.

Yuri sounds a bit too young.

David Coburn for me.

To me, Yuri made Captain Planet kinda sound like Sasuke Uchiha and Yosuke Hanamura...

Did anyone know that Tom Cruise was the original choice for Captain Planet? Besides that, my vote goes to Coburn.

@DravenRoth994 I'm pretty sure that's only a rumor.

@PurpleWarrior13 Really? Time Magazine even stated this as fa back as December 1989. If that is the case, then I certaintly can't trust eveything I read.

@DravenRoth994 Ted Turner may have been pushing to cast Cruise, like all the other celebrities (Meg Ryan, Whoopi Goldberg, Tim Curry, etc), but I don't think he ever actually did any work in the role.

@PurpleWarrior13 Figures, that was also part of an article I read. He may have been considered, but whether he actually did any dialogue is unknown.

 4 Shout Outs!
Neither voice is too original. Dave had much more to work with, and while his performance wasn't terribly memorable (it sounds a lot like Peter Kelamis' Goku voice...), it did suit the character nicely. If Yuri had more material to work with, I guess he could've worked well. I liked that he at least seemed to make his delivery campy on purpose, wheres David did it by accident. I guess I call it a tie.

David Coburn was so over the top and cheesy, but at the same time that's what I like about the performance.

Yuri Lowenthal wasn't bad, but seemed a bit too generic. Granted he didn't have a lot of material to go with, so I suppose its at least decent given the circumstances.

Still, I'm voting for David Coburn and his fantastic puns. Yuri Lowenthal is a bit of a distant second, but I think if given another chance he could do well.
