Voice Compare » Captain America » Winter Soldier

Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Winter Soldier with sound clips and images.
Winter Soldier is initially a foe now Anti-hero ally of Captain America whose comic book debut was in Captain America Volume 5 #1 in January of 2005. Winter Soldier is one of the various fates that have happened to Captain America's sidekick Bucky in which Bucky was captured and brainwashed into a cold-blooded assassin by the Soviets (or in one story the Red Skull). Back when Winter Soldier was a villain his persona somewhat differed (he is either a violent amnesiac or hates Captain America and blames him for his predicament here) but when he becomes a Anti-Hero he makes amends to Cap and wishes to atone for his past as Winter Soldier. As Winter Soldier Bucky is a lot stronger with his new cybernetic arm and while he is still well known as Cap's old partner he has worked with the Black Widow before as well.

Alright folks today in the Captain America VC section we take a look at this new version of Bucky... WINTER SOLDIER! Lets begin...

Crispin Freeman- First of all one can tell that his voice and performance for the role is very similar to what he has done for Albedo Piazzola (well namely when he is speaking to Cap). But to be fair all things considered it is rather understandable. But still Crispin's voice is pretty good as his performance as he can go from serious minded soldier to someone who has a bit too much issues with his old partner. Its a pretty good example of Crispin's work and of the voice work in the game.

Jon Curry-  At first I thought that Jon's voice was perhaps a little too high but I did start to like it more as I have realized that Jon was playing Winter Soldier as Scott Menville's Bucky all grown up and kind of bitter about his life. While Jon's voice and performance for the role was okay at first but he did get considerably better later on when the show did more focus on Winter Soldier's past. It was a good example of Jon's work and of the voice work in the show nevertheless.

Yuri Lowenthal- First of all I have noticed on how unlike the others Yuri seems to be playing this role as more of an Anti-Hero instead of a Villain (well a far lighter Anti-Hero consdiering what kind of game this is but still). Anyways Yuri has a fairly good voice for the role and his performance is pretty good (though limited due to lack of lines) as Yuri tries to play up the fact that Winter Soldier is... well... a Soldier. But still while this is an okay example of Yuri's work in general its one of his better performances in this game at least.

Bob Bergen- I too must agree that this is a very interesting change of pace for Bob here as his voice and performance work very well with the role here. But still Bob was a natural fit for the role here as he does a fine job in playing the Winter Soldier as a resentful yet tragic Anti-Villain character.I also liked on how Bob made Winter Soldier sound threatening and hateful but also made him sympathetic in a way as well and its a very good example of his work.

Overall both all of them are pretty good for the role in their own way but I think I am going with Bob Bergen the most here.

After hearing David Hayter as the Winter Soldier part of me wants to hear Robert McCollum take a crack at him at some point simply to make the compare more interesting

David is alright. He's just way too bland here, even makes Bob sound better in my opinion.

David Hayter is the best. I don't mind the Snake influence because I'm pretty sure casting Hayter to begin with was a deliberate Metal Gear homage, and it makes him a lot nicer to listen to.

David Hayter sounds closest to how I imagined Winter Soldier to sound, so I'll go with him. I also like Crispin Freeman, Bob Bergen and Jon Curry.

Hayter is alright but it kinda throws you off guard when you hear bits of Solid Snake in his performance.

I do like Hayter in the role, though he does slip into snake quite a few times, which is very noticeable. It's not that it's bad, he does good for what he had, it's just the voice sticks out like a sore thumb at points.

I really like Hayter, but it might mainly be because I miss hearing his voice so much. Even so, I didn't really feel any of the current portrayals were too memorable, so I changed my vote to Hayter. Although the writing almost seemed like they were trying to include Solid Snake into the Marvel Universe.

Maybe it's just because the Winter Soldier movie was more or less my first real taste of the character, but all these guys seem to talk too much.

When I picture the Winter Soldier, I picture him not speaking unless ABSOLUTELY necessary.

Sticking with Curry, but Bob Bergen was pretty good and Yuri Lowenthal was all right as Bucky

I'm going with Jon Curry because he makes the Winter Soldier sound sinister and heartless.

Crispin is 2nd because I like the kind of smug attitude he gives off.

Bob was good but kinda bland in a sense.

Yuri was all punk & in the zone. He wasn't bad, just decent.

None of them are my ideal Winter Soldier, but that may be for the best. A lot of these voice casting choices are out of the box, and my ideal winter Soldier would probably be a typecast actor, like Troy Baker. Can't always trust my judgement.

@VctrBnsn Funny, I actually thought Troy Baker would voice him in Avengers Assemble.

Bob seriously impressed me. I was very pleased to hear of his casting. He has so much range and deserves to spread his wings past Looney Tunes*.

*I know he's done more than just LT, but that's a huge bulk of his work these days.

1. Crispin Freeman: Though recently Winter has been portrayed as being calmer, I enjoyed Crispin's crazy take. He sounds threatening and evil but I can see the voice transition into Winter Soldier's anti-hero side.

2. Bob Bergen: While a little bland in some lines, I liked when he talked calmly. He was threatening but not to an evil degree. It's not a stand out of the show but a nice change of pace for Bob.

3. Yuri Lowenthal: I think he could have worked but he sounds a bit too heroic. I think he deserves a second shot but for now he's just okay.

4. Jon Curry: I don't get the love, he's rather awkward in some lines, he's too high, he's a bit too sinister, and he just seems off for Winter. Yet people love it, I dunno maybe I'm missing something.

Jon Curry sounds a bit to high but his acting is fine. Crispin Freeman sounds more natural and I also like how he sounds like a sane Albedo Piazzola. Vote goes to Freeman.

Crispin Freeman for me. I'm not really a fan of Jon Curry's voice. I don't think the raspiness works, the voice is a bit too high and to be honest, the voice is very dull while Crispin sounds more entertaining and interesting IMO.

@Dodgibishi You were thinking of that politician the Red Skull disguised himself as. He sounded a lot like Adrian but was really Steve Blum who also played Red Skull on the show.

On top of that Curry sounds a bit forced and a bit too high. Crispin fits for Winter's crazy moments and his normal villain moments plus I can see him in heroic moments.

Both are good, but I'm gonna go with Jon Curry for Winter Soldier.

To be fair, Jon's take does sound slightly higher due to the fact that these were taken from an Australian airing, where they are slightly sped up.

Jon Curry, though I was disappointed they didn't get Scott Menville to play Winter Soldier; he could've used his Nightwing voice.
said at 9:57 PM on Wed Nov 27 2013
@TheVengeanceKnight I think they might have and changed their minds, in one of the previously on segments (I think in Code Red) they play the scene where winter soldier injects Ross with the Hulk serum and he sounds like Scott's voice instead of Jon's, as well as sounding different than it did in the episode it appeared.

Giving it to Jon Curry. It's more unique. I do think Crispin's take works though.
