Winter Soldier

Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Winter Soldier with sound clips and images.
Franchise: Captain America

Winter Soldier is initially a foe now Anti-hero ally of Captain America whose comic book debut was in Captain America Volume 5 #1 in January of 2005. Winter Soldier is one of the various fates that have happened to Captain America's sidekick Bucky in which Bucky was captured and brainwashed into a cold-blooded assassin by the Soviets (or in one story the Red Skull). Back when Winter Soldier was a villain his persona somewhat differed (he is either a violent amnesiac or hates Captain America and blames him for his predicament here) but when he becomes a Anti-Hero he makes amends to Cap and wishes to atone for his past as Winter Soldier. As Winter Soldier Bucky is a lot stronger with his new cybernetic arm and while he is still well known as Cap's old partner he has worked with the Black Widow before as well.

Alright folks today in the Captain America VC section we take a look at this new version of Bucky... WINTER SOLDIER! Lets begin...

Crispin Freeman- First of all one can tell that his voice and performance for the role is very similar to what he has done for Albedo Piazzola (well namely when he is speaking to Cap). But to be fair all things considered it is rather understandable. But still Crispin's voice is pretty good as his performance as he can go from serious minded soldier to someone who has a bit too much issues with his old partner. Its a pretty good example of Crispin's work and of the voice work in the game.

Jon Curry-  At first I thought that Jon's voice was perhaps a little too high but I did start to like it more as I have realized that Jon was playing Winter Soldier as Scott Menville's Bucky all grown up and kind of bitter about his life. While Jon's voice and performance for the role was okay at first but he did get considerably better later on when the show did more focus on Winter Soldier's past. It was a good example of Jon's work and of the voice work in the show nevertheless.

Yuri Lowenthal- First of all I have noticed on how unlike the others Yuri seems to be playing this role as more of an Anti-Hero instead of a Villain (well a far lighter Anti-Hero consdiering what kind of game this is but still). Anyways Yuri has a fairly good voice for the role and his performance is pretty good (though limited due to lack of lines) as Yuri tries to play up the fact that Winter Soldier is... well... a Soldier. But still while this is an okay example of Yuri's work in general its one of his better performances in this game at least.

Bob Bergen- I too must agree that this is a very interesting change of pace for Bob here as his voice and performance work very well with the role here. But still Bob was a natural fit for the role here as he does a fine job in playing the Winter Soldier as a resentful yet tragic Anti-Villain character.I also liked on how Bob made Winter Soldier sound threatening and hateful but also made him sympathetic in a way as well and its a very good example of his work.

Overall both all of them are pretty good for the role in their own way but I think I am going with Bob Bergen the most here.

Ok, changing my vote to David Hayter. Crispin is still my second favorite but, that Solid Snake voice really fits with Bucky's character IMO.

Time to update my thoughts on this VC.

David Hayter is really boss in this role. I think he really nails the Anti-Hero aspect quite well.

Scott Porter is also pretty boss. His dark, gritty voice and delivery fits the character quite well.

Jon Curry, I have to agree with Autovolt on this one. He does get too much flak, which is sad, 'cause I felt his performance was pretty solid and his voice pretty unique.

Crispin Freeman fits the villainous incarnation quite well. I'm kinda curious on how he would pull off the Anti-Hero persona.

Yuri Lowenthal is quite cool too. Quite possibly one of the better performances in that game.

Roger Craig Smith does a pretty cool job despite the fact that he was just a fill-in.

Bob Bergen is cool, but I really prefer the others. However, I must say that it's pretty cool to see Bergen play against type.

Jon Cury, an under rated voice actor who's performance stands out perfectly. #1 bar the none, though David Hayer and Scott Porter are pretty close (Even thou the later is a LEGO role)

Bob Bergen and Rodger Craig Smith had potential, but as good as they were, they're just not as good as the first three in my book.

Bonus: I can seriously see Troy Baker or Matthew Mercer as the Winter Soldier, especially the latter, the guy looks like a real Bucky Barnes!

I've yet to hear the perfect voice for Winter Soldier, but Jon Curry and Roger Craig Smith come pretty close.

I suggested this in the forum, but I think Vic Mignogna would be great as him.

Avengers EMH has very good voice acting for most of the characters. In the case of Winter Soldier, not so much. John Curry sounds like Hayter's Solid Snake from MGS4 where it sounds way too gruff. Ironic, considering that Hayter's take here isn't all that gruff & sounds way better in comparison to Curry's take here. I might do a ranking somewhere down the line, but as of right now, John Curry is definitely leaning towards the bottom 3 rather than the top 3.

I've got to vote for David Hayter why because I love me a good casting gag....Solid Snake as Bucky....That just works. His voice is basically the earlier Solid Snake he voiced he did the first game before he began to approach Snake in a lower gruffer tone, with that said his lighter sounding voice fits Winter Soldier to a tee.

Roger Craig Smith is a surprisingly great fit, even if he was just filling in for Bob Bergen in that episode, he really captures this gruff, bitter, angry ex-friend of Captain America. He might be my second favourite here and honestly voices him better than he does as Cap.

Bob Bergen playing Winter Soldier is such a massive playing against type role, it's great to hear him do a gruffer and angrier role. He sounds a bit old for the role but considering the fact he's been alive and kicking since the 1940's its a nice little touch.

Jon Curry gets maybe a bit too much flak honestly, I like his gruff raspy voice. It's unique compared to a lot of usual gruff voices I hear most of the time. I love the way performed that rant in the clip.

Crispin Freeman definitely pulls off the bitter version well but I don't think he adds that much to the role compared to the rest.

Yuri Lowenthal sounds deeper than he usually does but at the end of the day, it's nothing special in the least, still good though.

Overall David Hayter is my favourite.

BONUS: I could so see Brad Swaile pulling off The Winter Soldier, just imagine his Setsuna F. Seiei or Jin Kazama but more raspy. I also would have liked if Scott Menville had got to voice him since he was an excellent Bucky.

I've been playing Marvel Heroes recently because I have no life and since I decided to pick Winter Solider as my starter I figured I would rank his compare too.

1. David Hayter: I'm probably just biased because of how much I like David Hayter's voice, but he's awesome. His voice is stern, charismatic and commanding and he really conveys that this is a guy who has been through hell. None of the others have that same feel to them. David easily gets my vote.

2. Bob Bergen: His voice is a little too light and forced sounding. Aside from that he does a pretty good job of conveying Winter Soldier's lust for revenge.* It's a pretty good performance.

3. Roger Craig Smith: Considering his role in the episode Roger does a pretty good job. His voice fits well and I would like to hear him get a real shot at it. How was he in that mobile game?

4. Crispin Freeman: I really think Crispin Freeman is a natural choice and his voice is a great fit. The problem I have is how the character is written in UA. He just acts like some smug jerk with none of the actual depth of Winter Soldier's character. Would love to see him get another shot at it.

5. Jon Curry: Oh boy. I know I said Bob sounded kind of forced, but he's got nothing on Jon here. That rasp comes and goes and sometimes is way too forced. He sounds like he's kind of overacting too.

6. Yuri Lowenthal: He's just kind of there. I really don't have much to say. Especially since Yuri already plays a few other characters in that game and it all blends a bit.

*Couldn't make it through this without one Metal Gear reference. Not where I expected it to end up though.

Hayter is how I imagined the character sounding, and we know from the past he can do the Cap voice as well. He has the right of amount f ruggedness, but you can imagine him being as nicer guy like Bucky can be. The others were fine, but leaned too much toward gruffness or intense for my liking.

David Hayter and his Winter Soldier have similar hair and facial hair.

Also, casting Roger there was for convenience and since Bucky there was a manifestation of Cap's guilty conscience it makes sense that it would sound somewhat like him, too.

I do like Hayter in the role, though he does slip into snake quite a few times, which is very noticeable. It's not that it's bad, he does good for what he had, it's just the voice sticks out like a sore thumb at points.

I really like Hayter, but it might mainly be because I miss hearing his voice so much. Even so, I didn't really feel any of the current portrayals were too memorable, so I changed my vote to Hayter. Although the writing almost seemed like they were trying to include Solid Snake into the Marvel Universe.

1. Crispin Freeman: Though recently Winter has been portrayed as being calmer, I enjoyed Crispin's crazy take. He sounds threatening and evil but I can see the voice transition into Winter Soldier's anti-hero side.

2. Bob Bergen: While a little bland in some lines, I liked when he talked calmly. He was threatening but not to an evil degree. It's not a stand out of the show but a nice change of pace for Bob.

3. Yuri Lowenthal: I think he could have worked but he sounds a bit too heroic. I think he deserves a second shot but for now he's just okay.

4. Jon Curry: I don't get the love, he's rather awkward in some lines, he's too high, he's a bit too sinister, and he just seems off for Winter. Yet people love it, I dunno maybe I'm missing something.
