Voice Compare » Bleach » Kenpachi Zaraki
Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Kenpachi Zaraki with sound clips and images.
Kenpachi Zaraki is one of the various protagonists in the Bleach series and was one of the various characters whom was introduced in the Soul Society Arc. Kenpachi Zaraki is the captain of the 11th Squad Division of the Gotei 13 and often appears to have a rather savage fighting style and appearance (and he often encourages people to think of him as a vicious savage as well). Kenpachi is very much a Blood Knight namely someone who loves to fight but he does have a code of ethics so in other words over the course of the series he becomes a anti-hero. Kenpachi is known for having his Lt. Yachiru always by his side and that when he fights he normally tries to prolong the fights as much as possible.

EDITOR'S OPINION
Today on the Bleach VC section we take a look at the 11t Squad Leader... KENPACHI ZARAKI! Let us begin...David Lodge- David's work as Kenpachi is one of the more renowned performances in the English dub of the series and one can easily see why. David's fairly deep and gruff voice suits the role very well, his performance was also quite suiting for Kenpachi as well. David's work on the role suits on how Kenpachi loves the thrill of a good fight and loves to think of himself as a violent savage but is also one of the good guys. David Lodge's work as Kenpachi is a fine example of his work and of the voice work in the show.
Patrick Seitz- Patrick Seitz's work on the role was certainly not bad as his Kenpachi voice also had a fairly low and gruff tone which does work pretty well with the role (even if he does more than occasionally slip into his Ragna the Bloodedge voice). Patrick's performance also suits Kenpachi's savage but honorable persona pretty well too. However PAtrick's voice for the role is not bad per say but it does sound a little too young for the role here (granted Kenpachi is not a really old guy per say but Patrick's voice for the role does seem a little bit too young sounding for Kenpachi). Anyways while I do agree that David Lodge's work is indeed better but Patrick did a pretty good attempt at his own right so his work is pretty good too.
Overall I too liked David Lodge the most but Patrick Seitz wasn't that bad for the role as well.

Seitz... he's not horrible, but he's not David Lodge, which is nearly as bad. The Bleach anime dub quality began it's downhill slope after Kim Strauss left to pursue more profitable employment in radio.

David Lodge is perfect for the role, I think he should have sounded a little more vicious but he definitely fits the character.
Patrick Seitz isn't the worst person they could have gotten to do this role... but he's still totally miscast. The dub for Bleach has been going downhill for years now... too bad, back during the Soul Society arc it was pretty much top notch stuff.

I've never watched Bleach before, but from these clips it sounds like David Lodge gave Kenpachi a gruff tone, but he also has a lot of personality to his voice, a really confident sounding tone which sounds like it really fits.
I agree with NCZ about Patrick Seitz's performance, on its own it sounds pretty decent, but compared to David Lodge, Patrick sounds WAAAAAY too gruff and seems more generic than anything, heck he kinda sounds like a chain smoker. In comparison it sounds really forced.
So yeah, David Lodge for me.

Patrick Seitz's take on Kenpachi Zaraki is simply inferior compared to David Lodge's Kenpachi Zaraki.

I'm going with David. Patrick's performance is actually good when taken by its own merits, but I can see how the change would be jarring.

Anyone know why the voice change? Was David unavailable to voice Kenpachi for the "Zanpakuto Rebellion" story arc? Or is Patrick Seitz taking over the role permanently?

@wright1996 I heard that David quit the show due to it not paying well, so the change is probably permanent.

Definitely giving this to David Lodge.
His deep but gruff voice works for Kenpachi. After all, he is a good guy but with an intense love for the fight and is also a butal/savage fighter.

Lodge no doubt.
He gave Kenpachi just the right amount of intensity. The 'Good guy, but not afraid to show off his crazy, yet badass skills' kind of tone and it suits him PERFECTLY.
It's been---maybe 3-4 episodes that I've seen with Patrick's voice an I'm still having a hard time adjusting to it. Patrick's take sounds too gruff to my ears and just doesn't fit the character at all.
