Kenpachi Zaraki

Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Kenpachi Zaraki with sound clips and images.
Franchise: Bleach

Kenpachi Zaraki is one of the various protagonists in the Bleach series and was one of the various characters whom was introduced in the Soul Society Arc. Kenpachi Zaraki is the captain of the 11th Squad Division of the Gotei 13 and often appears to have a rather savage fighting style and appearance (and he often encourages people to think of him as a vicious savage as well). Kenpachi is very much a Blood Knight namely someone who loves to fight but he does have a code of ethics so in other words over the course of the series he becomes a anti-hero. Kenpachi is known for having his Lt. Yachiru always by his side and that when he fights he normally tries to prolong the fights as much as possible.

Today on the Bleach VC section we take a look at the 11t Squad Leader... KENPACHI ZARAKI! Let us begin...

David Lodge- David's work as Kenpachi is one of the more renowned performances in the English dub of the series and one can easily see why.  David's fairly deep and gruff voice suits the role very well, his performance was also quite suiting for Kenpachi as well. David's work on the role suits on how Kenpachi loves the thrill of a good fight and loves to think of himself as a violent savage but is also one of the good guys. David Lodge's work as Kenpachi is a fine example of his work and of the voice work in the show.

Patrick Seitz- Patrick Seitz's work on the role was certainly not bad as his Kenpachi voice also had a fairly low and gruff tone which does work pretty well with the role (even if he does more than occasionally slip into his Ragna the Bloodedge voice). Patrick's performance also suits Kenpachi's savage but honorable persona pretty well too. However PAtrick's voice for the role is not bad per say but it does sound a little too young for the role here (granted Kenpachi is not a really old guy per say but Patrick's voice for the role does seem a little bit too young sounding for Kenpachi). Anyways while I do agree that David Lodge's work is indeed better but Patrick did a pretty good attempt at his own right so his work is pretty good too.

Overall I too liked David Lodge the most but Patrick Seitz wasn't that bad for the role as well.

David Lodge is quite chilling as Kenpachi sounding very unique and also badass too.

Patrick Seitz isn't terrible but he has this really gravelly deep voice that just doesn't fit the character all that well.

Patrick is good, but he's a little too gruff and raspy for my taste.

My vote goes to David Lodge.

David Lodge was far more natural and distinctive as Kenpachi: absolutely chilling when he screams or shouts in particular.

Patrick Seitz isn't a terrible replacement or anything, he's okay, but he has this really forced gravelly deeper tone that doesn't quite match up with the role nearly as well.

I think that problem with Pat is he's just so...forced, when David's aggression & gravel is so much more natural. His voice definitely isn't too light or anything (if anything, it's deeper than Lodge), he's just not carrying it well.

They're both good, but David Lodge has a move unique take on the character that stands out more IMO. Seitz sounds kind of... plain in comparison? Still he isn't a particularly bad replacement all things considered.

@HylianBelmont I sort of felt like, just looking at the Japanese VA, Seitz would be a good match, but Lodge has much more range & he sounds naturally older whereas Pat has trouble maintaining that. Adding depth to a voice is difficult when you have trouble maintaining the more intense attitude - even if you have the size naturally. Some other names I thought of just looking at his JP actor are John DiMaggio, Dave Boat, & Fred Tatasciore.

Also I wonder why they didnt use JB Blanc for this instead? He sounds closer to Dave & doesnt have to force himself to maintain that kind of edge, & he did take over a character or two in this series even.

@huzaifa_ahmed I suppose Seitz was the best option there at the time?

@huzaifa_ahmed Didn't Blanc play more characters than Seitz already? Seitz was Isshin, but he wasn't really on much, Blanc on the other hand was Komamura, Ginrei, Shrieked, Genga, Patros and Jai in the one movie. I know that the majority of those guys were filler characters who barely made an impact, however it might have been repetitive to give him someone else, especially a major character.

Also, I think Keith Szarabajka would be absolutely perfect for this character.

Haven't gotten to watching Bleach yet, but based on the clips...

David has a really cool gruff sounding voice that's slightly aged. Really fits the character design well. Plus, great acting. I always thought David was an underrated actor and this performance is proof of that.

Patrick's voice would fit some other character well, doesn't work here for me. He sounds way too young along with the rasp being a tad overboard. Plus some of his acting is kinda meh. Sorry to say this about Patrick of all people since he is a great VA but I think he was miscast.

BONUS: I think Scott McNeil could possibly work here if there was an Ocean Dub.

I didn't watch that much of Bleach nor am I really a fan of it but from what I've seen of the show, I can at least say that David Lodge was absolutely badass as Kenpachi Zaraki.

Oh man his gruff and grizzled sounding voice makes Kenpachi a force to be reckoned with bringing great ferocity, intensity and a lot of depth to the role.

Patrick Seitz is a great VA no doubt but he just sounds awkward in the role of Kenpachi, I mean he and Lodge barely sound alike so it doesn't feel a naturally evolution nor does Patrick have the vicious bite that made David's take so freaking cool.

It's a shame that Lodge left the role but what he had done with the role was pretty great. David's getting my vote for sure.

Lodge is much better as Kenpachi. It's right on par with Fumihiko Tachiki in this role. He brought a great energy to this role. One of the best standouts voices in the Bleach English dub.

Seitz is a mixed bag. While it's gruff, he doesn't bring the same energy that David did. He sounds really flat & bored in some of his lines.

David Lodge- He sounds intimidating, intense, and distinct as Kenpachi, all while being able to sound collected as well as sharp in tone.

Patrick Seitz- Decent, but comes off as a generic evil guy to me.

I think I like Patrick's a little better because he sounds more intimidating, but David Lodge was also really good.

I have to say that Patrick does a better job of getting that gruff 'don't mess with me' voice. So I prefer him over David, mainly since he sounds a little too casual for my liking.

While I prefer David Lodge, am I the only one who doesn't think Patrick Seitz was that bad? He does sound very menacing, but I admit it is a little bot overdone.

@BioZero216 While it's not a terrible performance from Seitz, I can't get Isshin Kurosaki out of my head when he speaks.

David Lodge is much better. His voice has that deepness, gruffness and tone that fits Kenpachi best. I feel like Patrick's voice just doesn't have the same qualities that made David Lodge good for Kenpachi.

While I am a bigger follower of Patrick Seitz, who is an absolutely amazing voice actor, I prefer David Lodge's voice as Kenpachi. I do not mind Patrick's as Kenpachi though, actually I find them both quite nice~

I think Patrick is an incredible actor, but David Lodge made this role, in fact, he IS Kenpachi.

What. The. Actual. HELL!?!? It's honestly sad that I've seen more episodes of Bleach with Kenpachi Fried Chicken being portrayed by Patrick Seitz, rather than being voiced by David Lodge.

Now let me clarify one thing: Seitz's performance on its own has a couple merits, but when a certain someone puts that with David's take on equal ground, that's like having to compare a paraplegic with a robot! ...And I think I crossed the line with that paragraph.

Nonetheless, David Lodge for me.

1. David Lodge
2. Patrick Seitz

I'll easily admit I went overboard with this comment in retrospect. Wow, three whole years tho...

But with that said, the vote stays. David Lodge brought an insane amount of energy alongside fierceness to the role and also did a really nice job zeroing in on Zaraki's other aspects as a character. Meanwhile Patrick Seitz' take on Kenpachi, whilst not horrendous on its own, comes off as strained compared to his predecessor's and occasionally I can't help but hear Ragna the Bloodedge or... well, Isshin Kurosaki. He's not quite distinctive either. This wasn't one of Seitz' best roles unfortunately, which is a shame because he's one of my favorite VAs in the field.

True. Don't get me wrong, Patrick is an incredible voice actor and his Kenpachi doesn't sound that bad on it's own, but compared to David, it just sounds way too young for Kenny and he actually reminds me of Laxus whenever he talks.

Seitz... he's not horrible, but he's not David Lodge, which is nearly as bad. The Bleach anime dub quality began it's downhill slope after Kim Strauss left to pursue more profitable employment in radio.

David Lodge is perfect for the role, I think he should have sounded a little more vicious but he definitely fits the character.

Patrick Seitz isn't the worst person they could have gotten to do this role... but he's still totally miscast. The dub for Bleach has been going downhill for years now... too bad, back during the Soul Society arc it was pretty much top notch stuff.

I've never watched Bleach before, but from these clips it sounds like David Lodge gave Kenpachi a gruff tone, but he also has a lot of personality to his voice, a really confident sounding tone which sounds like it really fits.

I agree with NCZ about Patrick Seitz's performance, on its own it sounds pretty decent, but compared to David Lodge, Patrick sounds WAAAAAY too gruff and seems more generic than anything, heck he kinda sounds like a chain smoker. In comparison it sounds really forced.

So yeah, David Lodge for me.

I'm going with David. Patrick's performance is actually good when taken by its own merits, but I can see how the change would be jarring.

Anyone know why the voice change? Was David unavailable to voice Kenpachi for the "Zanpakuto Rebellion" story arc? Or is Patrick Seitz taking over the role permanently?

Definitely giving this to David Lodge.

His deep but gruff voice works for Kenpachi. After all, he is a good guy but with an intense love for the fight and is also a butal/savage fighter.

Lodge no doubt.

He gave Kenpachi just the right amount of intensity. The 'Good guy, but not afraid to show off his crazy, yet badass skills' kind of tone and it suits him PERFECTLY.

It's been---maybe 3-4 episodes that I've seen with Patrick's voice an I'm still having a hard time adjusting to it. Patrick's take sounds too gruff to my ears and just doesn't fit the character at all.
