Voice Compare » Batman » Nightwing
Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Nightwing with sound clips and images.
Former pupil, sidekick and partner of the Dark Knight Batman, Dick Grayson has hung up his Robin costume and donned the persona of Nightwing. Going on a global training journey on his own, Nightwing has stepped out of the shadow of Batman and become his own man.

Special thanks to Jackson_H for additional sound clips.
EDITOR'S OPINION
Unlike his former alter ego, Nightwing has had fewer animated incarnations than Robin.Loren Lester maintained his exact sharp voice that he used for Robin in the Batman Animated Series.
In Teen Titans, we got a peek into the future and here, Scott Menville lowered the tone of his Robin voice to show how much the Boy Wonder had grown up.
Another future episode in The Batman gave us our only current Nightwing not to voice a Robin. Jerry O'Connell used his naturally strong voice to bring life to the hero of Bloodhaven.
Batman The Brave and the Bold actually showed Robin's transition into Nightwing with Crawford Wilson maintaining his same older version of Robin voice, with what sounds like the youngest voice amongst the current 4 Nightwings.

I'd like Matthew Mercer and Lacey Chabert to play Nightwing and Oracle sometime.

I'm curious- what do you think of Matthew Mercer as a potential Nightwing?
My personal picks for Nightwing and Oracle would be Josh Keaton and Caitlin Glass respectively. Pity the latter's based in Texas... where the voice-acting is for anime and the occasional video game.
I have Bryce Papenbrook and Cassandra Lee Morris in mind for Tim and Steph (then, those two work in mostly in anime and JRPGs, so... gah. A person can still dream, right?).
As for Cassandra Cain... the only actress that comes to mind is Kim Mai Guest.

If Quinton Flynn ever voiced Nightwing he would definitely be the best version out of anyone.

Scott Menville shouldn't have gotten rid of the rasp that his Robin had, if he had kept that and just put a bit more power into it he would be my favorite. For now, I'm going to say Jerry O'Connell.

1. Joey Hood- he gave the somber but not too somber feel that Nightwing should have. It has that strong/deep but not too deep voice that sounds like a student of Batman that has grown up butdoesn't sound exactly like Batman.
2. Jerry O'Connell- though I wish he had more screen time he does a good deep voice and sounds somber but not too much so.
3. Loren and Scott- both are alright, both could have deepen their voices a litte more.
4 Neil Patrick Harris- I am a big fan of Neil but I feel this was a mit of a miscast, it does show Nightwing's charm but I don't like how joking it is. Doesn't feel like he was under Batman's wing.
5. Crawford Wilson- He is too young, I get it's Robin just turing Nightwing but doesn't really fit for what I imagine. He does alright if not a bit winy sometimes but does have some strong and I can see it as a 'ealy Nightwing'
6. Jesse McCartney- I liked him as Robin but he barley differs his voice from Robin. It should be deeper and I konda blame how we barley see him in recent episodes, espcially doing more solo or even team missions but for now it doesn't really feel that strong or independent.

To be fair, YJ Nightwing has a better relationship with Bats than most incarnations, so it's not gonna sound as dark. Also, he's only 19 in this incarnation, and Jesse's in his mid-20's and he's just using his regular voice. Eh, a case of Reality is Unrealistic, it seems. :-P

Loren Lester, followed by Jerry O'Connell. For some reason, Neil Patrick Harris' voice just seems unnatural for me, I like him as an actor but not as a voice actor.

Neil Patrick Harris- Easily the best; he captures both lighthearted and serious moments wonderfully.
Scott Menville/ Jerry O' Connell: A nice mix of young and old. The fact that they sound like the older versions of the incarnations of Robin in this show is a bonus.
Jesse McCartney: This guy would have been in second (or maybe even first) place... if he'd deepened his voice a bit more. I get that Nightwing is still a teenager in Invasion, but still- Jesse's Nightwing sounds like a 16-17 year old, and not like the 19 year old Dick's supposed to be. Greg said that he'd pitched Jesse's voice up to play Dick as a 13 year old, and stopped doing that (pitching Jesse up, I mean) when Nightwing came into the picture, but it's stil to young. A pity too, because, acting-wise, I think Jesse nailed Dick as both a 13-year-old and a 19-year-old. It's just the voice itself that bothers me.
And I second whoever said that Yuri Lowenthal or Troy Baker should play Nightwing! My fangirl dream would come true if that happened!

I wasn't a big fan of McCartney's Nightwing when the second season first started, because while his voice for Nightwing was certainly deeper than his voice for Robin, it didn't sound like a guy in his late teens. As the episodes went on, I noticed that his voice started to get even deeper, and Dick started to sound more like a guy his age. I suppose he just needed time to adjust to playing an older character after playing a 13-year-old for 26 episodes, and I must say, his Nightwing is slowly growing on me.

@pete After hearing Loren as Iron Fist, I think he sounds perfect to voice Dick Grayson, especially if Dick ever became batman on screen. NPH doesn't sound like he'll make a good dick grayson/batman so I'm changing my vote to loren.
Replysaid at 4:10 PM on Mon Jun 11 2012
@ZangetzuBLK He'd have to change his voice though. I'm not against it at all but his DCAU voice wouldn''t fit. He would be awesome if his voice is different than his DCAU one as I have a hard time imagining a voice for a man in his early to mid 20's like that coming out of Batman.
Replysaid at 10:03 AM on Tue Jul 10 2012
@pete Do you think Niel can play batman as dick grayson? I've never heard his voice in a way that made me think he could. I tried imagining it in the comics and all I could hear is a graspy NPH.

Loren Lester will always be my top choice for Dick Grayson, whether as Robin or Nightwing. I'd be curious to see how he'd handle being Batman if a game or animated series/film covered that period. Neil Patrick Harris is a close second. He had the charm that Dick requires.

@TheVengeanceKnight Under the Red Hood's Nightwing seemed a bit goofy for my taste, but I'll blame that on the writers; Neil Patrick Harris himself is awesome.

@TheVengeanceKnight Not sure if I like Jesse McCartney's Nightwing. Gonna stick with Scott on this one.
Replysaid at 6:53 AM on Thu May 3 2012
@TheVengeanceKnight I think the issue with Jesse is that his voice really didn't change from Robin's, which works coz it's a young sounding voice. As Nightwing, he's an adult and should sound older.
Replysaid at 7:53 AM on Thu May 3 2012
@Foxwolf I had the same problem with Garfield Logan/Beast Boy; even though he's five years older and has more or less been turned into a monkey, he didn't sound any different than he did as a normal kid in "Image".
Replysaid at 4:34 PM on Thu May 3 2012
@TheVengeanceKnight He's still quite young though. Younger than the DCAU version being only 18 well the DCAU Nightwing was mid 20's.

While Conroy and Hamill are my favorites as the Joker, I'm going to cop that I don't have a TAS basis on everyone and while Loren Lester was all right, he's not my favorite as Nightwing. I'm gonna go with Jerry O'Connell. His Nightwing does a right amount of young enough to be Nightwing yet old enough to no longer be Robin and has a sense of authority to make in believable to think he could lead the Titans or something. NPH was good as Nightwing, too, but his Nightwing was a little more jokey and a goofball than Dick as Nightwing sound be.

4th - Menville
3rd - Lester
Before I go on I have to agree with foxwolf on the above point. If a voice actor doesn't get any meaty lines to say, then it holds back their talent somewhat.
Having said that...
OConnell gets the ribbon. And I still give
Harris the trophy.
*
Now where have I seen Jerry OConnell before? Oh, of course 'Sliders".
A noteworthy note: Jerry OConnell lends his voice to Captain Marvel, in S04E07 of Justice League.
