Baby Doll

Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Baby Doll with sound clips and images.
Franchise: Batman

Baby Doll is another one of Batman's foes whom was actually made for Batman The Animated series (unfortunately unlike other DCAU series created characters such as Harley Quinn and Terry McGinnis she was never in the comics). Baby Doll's real name is Marion Louise "Mary" Dahl and like many villains in the Batman Animated Series she has a tragic backstory as Mary is a washed-up former child actress whom played the title character in the old sitcom "Love That Baby" when she was 5 years old, however she has a rare disease which is why she has the body of a little girl even though she is actually an adult. When the show "Love That Baby" ended Mary tried to have an acting career after the show was over (she was in a play of "Macbeth" but the play was a flop), Mary tried to get any sort of work at all after the show ended but she just couldn't get a job at all.  Mary was going through a lot of stress until she realized that the time she spent on the show "Love That Baby" was the only time in her life that she can think of that she was happy unfortunately this has caused her mind to snap and she has went into a life of crime.

Today on the Batman VC section we have a little something for this little lady here by the name of BABY DOLL! We will begin with the Batman Animated series in which she was voiced by Alison LaPlaca. One thing I liked about Alison's voice work for the role was that she did a cutesy higher voice for her "Baby Doll" voice and a more moderate toned voice for her actual voice. Alison's performance did suit the role on how Baby Doll is lets just say an Adult Child whom is having a hard time letting go of her past. (Or in other words a deconstruction of the idea of child characters "Never Growing Up".) So in other words Alison's work as Baby Doll is another fine example of the voice work in the show on how the show definitely knew how to make a sympathetic villain.

Baby Doll was a one-episode character in Batman the Animated and she was also a one-episode character in The New Batman Adventures and this time Laraine Newman gets to take over the role here. Unlike Alison, Laraine doesn't do so much of a voice shift as she voiced Baby Doll but it still works with Baby Doll's "Insane Womanchild" persona well enough. As for performance Laraine does a rather solid performance as while Laraine does play up how childish Baby Doll can be but the fact that Baby Doll is an adult in a child's body is not forgotten though. So in other words Laraine's performance for the role was very good and is one of her better VA performances. Overall I am going with a tie as both of these ladies did very well with the role here.

Alison perfectly is able to shift back and forth from the cutesy little girl voice to a grown woman incredibly well, and very naturally. Her delivery is solid and she nails both the creepy lines and emotional lines of Baby Doll.

Laraine is decent, but I feel she's kind of stuck halfway here. She's trying to sound like a grown woman while saying these little girl things and it sounds odd because she doesn't really change the voice all that much, so sometimes it just sounds like a grown woman saying little girl things. It's not bad, she's decent, but I feel she could've ironed out the voice a little more.

I'd say for a future VA, knowing her range I'd love to see Kari Wahlgren tackle this character.

I'm mostly gonna agree with Wrightway here since he pretty much took care of my thoughts but also adding that I find it a pity she wasn't added to the comics but at the same time it's hard to write for a character like this.

I enjoyed Allison a lot as the character, and she had traits of Cherly Chase as Anjelica so if Baby Doll were still around that's who I'd go with.

Alison LaPlaca's performance fits Baby Doll's woman-trapped-in-a-child's-body personality very well and she was able to shift the tone in her rendition of the character to reflect changes in Baby Doll's emotions really well.

Laraine Newman's performance is decent, but it doesn't carry the same weight or depth that Alison LaPlaca's did.

In the case of Alison, at least she was able to switch back and forth between shattered adult and cutesy kid.

Laraine did that as well.

The New Batman Adventures is portray Baby-Doll's desire to feel older, as opposed to her debut episode where she's trying to run away from reality, so it makes sense that Newman downplays the vocal shift. Nonetheless, LaPlaca's performance displays a lot more range and is more compelling as a result.

Laraine Newman is pretty good, but I think that Alison LaPlaca is better.

Laraine sounded too old for Mary Doll, and she couldn't transfer between young and old as easy as Alison could.

Gonna have to say Laraine Newman. She remembered that the character is still a woman but still affected some childish tones to her performance. Very rounded whereas I felt LaPlaca's only covered the child-like side.

Alison LaPlaca. Her performance is so heartbreaking and at the same time utterly chilling. One of my favorite voice acting performances ever.

My vote is for Alison, I have been watching the Wizard of Oz Anime a lot recently and she sounds a lot like Margot Kidder. I'd say so much that she could pass as a voice double.
