Avatar: The Last Airbender Avatar: The Last Airbender

Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Iroh with sound clips and images.
Franchise: Avatar: The Last Airbender

Iroh is former Prince and a retired Fire Nation general. He is the older brother of Firelord Ozai and uncle to Prince Zuko and Princess Azula.

Compared to the rest of his family he is wise, friendly and an easy-going person. He enjoys drinking tea and playing Pai Sho.

He is an extremely powerful Firebending master and one of the few Firebenders capable of generating lightning. Despite his somewhat clumsy and goofy nature, Iroh is a brilliant strategist and a force to be reckoned with.

Iroh was originally voiced by Mako Iwamatsu for Book 1: Water and Book 2: Earth (season 1 and 2).

Sadly Mako died from cancer and a replacement was necessary for the final season of Avatar: The Last Airbender (the episode "Tales of Ba Sing Se" was dedicated in his honor).

Mako's replacement for Book 3: Fire (season 3) was Greg Baldwin.

1. Mako Iwamatsu- This voice sounds wise, caring, and relaxed which is perfect for Iroh. May Mako rest in peace.
2. Greg Baldwin- He does an impressive imitation of Mako's voice, although it's a little higher.

They both really sound a like but sometimes Greg goes a bit out of the norm that Mako had but there isnt anything wrong with that.

Baldwin was never Mako's understudy. They've never met.

Usually when it comes to Voice Compare people will say I just love this person more but the Iroh voice compare.

Although people will prefer Mako, It is nice to see the fans showing their love for Greg Baldwin and giving their respect.

Mako Iwamatsu was truly phenomenal as Iroh. He managed to sound very wise, aged, and imparted knowledge with his smooth yet deep timbre, yet was also capable of sounding goofy and comedic when the time called for it as well: RIP, to a legend. He gets my vote, hands down.

Greg Baldwin was all things considered the best man to succeed him in the role, and did a pretty good job imitating Mako Iwamatsu, but he has a higher pitched registrar to work from.

I really respect Greg for carrying the torch so well. Still there's no contest in my mind, Mako takes the tea.

Mako's voice is perfect. Greg Baldwin does a decent impression, but that's really all it is. Mako gave this character a soul.

Uncle Iroh is by far the best character in all of Avatar and Mako was a huge part of making the character so great.

Mako's very aged and wise sounding voice fits this very humbled and outgoing uncle and father figure and gives the character so much depth. It's such a shame that Mako passed away the year before the show finished. I really wish he could have lived to at least finish the show.

With that said Greg Baldwin was a good replacement, probably the best they could have gotten. He does sound a bit too young though but in terms of portraying the character he did very well.

The late Mako Iwamatsu gets my vote and may he rest in peace.

They're both great, but I'll give it to Mako since he sounded a bit more weathered to me: Greg's impression was otherwise pretty seamless and he did very well with Iroh, though.

RIP Mako... Greg did him justice. I won't vote either or. I think Greg basically was a tribute to Mako, and they both did amazingly. Two very talented voice actors and one very sad loss.

Gotta vote for Mako, though Greg did a fantastic impression. If I didn't know any better I would've said it was the same person throughout the series.

I can't even vote. I refuse. Both are awesome. Mako is so great and an amazing actor, but I cannot deny Greg the fantastic job he did. The only reason I could go with mako over Greg is because he is the original.

both of them did a amazing job. I am giving it to both of them and both of them sound the same.

Unfortunately Mako died. But Fortunately they found a very similar voice. So similar that I only discover that was different when I read about it.

Though my vote obviously goes to Mako, I have to say that Greg filled his shoes perfectly. It reminds me of Corey Burton's take as Frollo (Kingdom Hearts) after Tony Jay's death.

Greg Baldwin fills Mako's shoes beautifully, but he is not and can never be Mako, so the original gets my vote.

Both of them were great; Mako, with his voice, created a character of deep thought, jovial characteristics, and a good heart, and Greg Baldwin took the torch and carried it on. I can't vote on just one, so I'm giving it to both of them.

Both voices sound very much alike, but there are subtle differences. Mako has the perfect "Zen Master"-type voice, and Greg was able to imitate it well.

I can't compare this competitively. There was no way possible for Mako to continue voicing Iroh and so Greg did a great job filling in and sounding as much like the distinct Mako as he could.

I kinda feel like Greg's voice is more of a tribute to Mako. Especially since I never thought anyone would be able to come that close to sounding like him.

R.I.P Mako. He voiced on of the best chacters in Avatar history.

Mako obviously did a fantastic job but it takes a lot of skills for someone to have a voice almost exactly the same as his predecessor and Greg Baldwin was pretty much spot on and definitely deserves praise as well.

I have to say Mako because I cry every time the episode "Tales of Ba Sing Se" comes on. It made me really feel for the character, and I just love Iroh's voice! I wish I had him for an uncle! :D

I think they made a good choice on Mako's replacement. If I wasn't as good at recognizing voices, I probably wouldn't have known the difference.
said at 3:33 PM on Sat May 11 2013
@Sarge Ray I'm really good at that too but when I was watching the show the first run I didn't know it had changed.

When I found out Mako passed before that season I went back because I was confused and discovered someone else voiced him in that season. Then I realized the writing of season 3 and how little they had him speak too.

thanks for finally uploading this.
I think Mako is the better voice for Iroh, but after his death I don't think anybody else could've done a great job like Greg Baldwin did. So he's great too.
