Voice Compare » Avatar: The Last Airbender » Iroh
Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Iroh with sound clips and images.
Iroh is former Prince and a retired Fire Nation general. He is the older brother of Firelord Ozai and uncle to Prince Zuko and Princess Azula.
Compared to the rest of his family he is wise, friendly and an easy-going person. He enjoys drinking tea and playing Pai Sho.
He is an extremely powerful Firebending master and one of the few Firebenders capable of generating lightning. Despite his somewhat clumsy and goofy nature, Iroh is a brilliant strategist and a force to be reckoned with.
Iroh was originally voiced by Mako Iwamatsu for Book 1: Water and Book 2: Earth (season 1 and 2).
Sadly Mako died from cancer and a replacement was necessary for the final season of Avatar: The Last Airbender (the episode "Tales of Ba Sing Se" was dedicated in his honor).
Mako's replacement for Book 3: Fire (season 3) was his longtime understudy and student Greg Baldwin.

R.I.P Mako. He voiced on of the best chacters in Avatar history.

Mako obviously did a fantastic job but it takes a lot of skills for someone to have a voice almost exactly the same as his predecessor and Greg Baldwin was pretty much spot on and definitely deserves praise as well.

I would have really loved to see how Mako would have done for the 3rd season

I have to say Mako because I cry every time the episode "Tales of Ba Sing Se" comes on. It made me really feel for the character, and I just love Iroh's voice! I wish I had him for an uncle! :D

They're both really good :D but my vote goes to Mako for being the original, considering how close they really are.

I think they made a good choice on Mako's replacement. If I wasn't as good at recognizing voices, I probably wouldn't have known the difference.

@Sarge Ray I'm really good at that too but when I was watching the show the first run I didn't know it had changed.
When I found out Mako passed before that season I went back because I was confused and discovered someone else voiced him in that season. Then I realized the writing of season 3 and how little they had him speak too.

WOW. they sound almost exactly alike. the only thing is that Mako's voice was a little more raspy. I probably would have gone my whole life thinking that for the entire series it was the same person playing Iroh if i hadn't come across this website

Of course Mako takes the cake, but Baldwin isn't too shabby either. (:

Greg Baldwin sounds great! They were fortunate to have found him. He sounds just like Mako and no one could tell the difference.

There were some parts in Book 2 voiced by Greg. There was a small short during the "Tales of Ba Sing Se" episode that was dedicated to Mako, voiced by Greg Baldwin.

Thanks for stopping by and for your kind words Mr. Baldwin. I do love hearing them side by side and am very impressed with your impression!

I spend far too much time googling myself! I've been pretty hard on my Mako impression as a rule...but hearing the voices side by side...it's not as bad as I thought! It's actually pretty good! Thanks for posting this!

I liked Mako Iwamatsu better, but I'm sure that he couldn't help his death, so Greg Baldwin was a good choice. But he did sound a little Italian.

I kinda feel like Greg's voice is more of a tribute to Mako. Especially since I never thought anyone would be able to come that close to sounding like him.
