Queen of Hearts

Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Queen of Hearts with sound clips and images.
Franchise: Alice in Wonderland

The Queen of Hearts is the short-tempered monarch of Wonderland and the mastermind of an army of sentient playing cards. She is quick to decree death sentences (always by decapitation) at even the slightest personal offense. However, her sentences are never carried out due to her husband, the King of Hearts, secretly pardoning the subjects behind the Queen's back. In the rare event that a trial is held, she declares the sentence before even reaching the verdict.

Working my way backward, I'll start by saying that the lesser two here are not really to blame themselves. Elizabeth does alright with what she has to work with, but the depiction of the queen here clearly does not respect the original source. I've never seen this Care Bears version, but judging by the sound clips I've heard so far I can tell it's really sugarcoated for the young kids' sake. Anni actually sounds quite nice, but once the sound effects take over, it brings to mind Jacqueline Hyde from "Where in Time is Carmen Sandiego?" Plus, I can't say I like the queen's appearance, judging from the picture we have here. Brings to memory the corny depiction of the Pharisee monster in the film of "Godspell".
Regarding the higher half, Tress does a very good job. She gives the queen exactly the right attitude, and her voice more than works. But nevertheless, there is no topping Verna. She nails the role and makes the queen exactly the tyrant of a monarch that Lewis Carroll had in mind.

There are some other queen voices we should have on this page too. We should add Moya O'Sullivan from the Burbank version and the actress that voiced her in the Rankin/Bass version. That is if we ever find out who that actress. We might even consider adding B.J. Ward from "The Pagemaster", even though she just quickly yelled "off with his head!"

I pick Verna Felton.

1. Verna Felton: Felton sounds the most intimidating and tyrannical and when she raises her voice it sounds very well done.
2. Tress MacNeille: MacNeille's performance is admirable, and at times she sounds like she is putting her own twist on the role.
3. Elizabeth Hanna: She is very good, and it is interesting to see the queen be more kinder and gentle.
4. Anni Long: It's a good voice but the effects are the one thing that put her at the bottom of the ranking.

Verna Felton is absolutely bombastic and over-the-top. I can really tell she's having the fun of her life delivering her lines.

Elizabeth Hanna does a very different version, but she is really good. I really love how she plays the Red Queen as a much kinder and gentler character.

Anni Long does deliver an awesome performance. The only thing that drags her down are the effects.

Tress MacNeille is too subdued, she just doesn't have the bombastic intensity of Verna.

Anni is actually my favorite out of these voices... that is, until the vocal effects start. They really, really ruin the performance for me. Her actual voice is perfect IMO, but the effects just don't fit the character. I voted for mer anyway since the effects were not her fault.

Verna is of course the classic. She's good, but not as good as Anni IMO. Personal preference more than anything else.

Tress does a decent impression of Verna. It's really good when she speaks softly, but as soon as she starts yelling, the illusion is lost. Ignoring the fact that it's an impression, it's just okay; doesn't sound very villainous to me.

Elizabeth's is obviously a different version of the character who is not a villain. As such, it's kind of an apples-to-oranges comparison. The voice works very well for her version of the character, but not for the original version as written by Carroll; she's supposed to be the villain.

 1 Shout Out!
Verna Felton edges out, a very funny-yet-intimidating performance from her. Tress does a pretty good version too, though it's easy to tell it isn't an exact impersonation. Not all that keen on Elizabeth, but that's more of not caring for the depiction she's voicing.

Anni gets really terrifying the more she talks, no doubts about it. I enjoy her more than Tress for the vocal effects alone, so she's definitely a worthy second for taking it in her own direction.

Verna gets my vote for making The Queen of Hearts what she is.

Tress is 2nd as she does a wonderful impression of Verna.

Anni is just average & very forgettable in a way.

Elizabeth is too soft & sweet, something The Queen of Hearts is not. That to me is a miscast.

@Ross123 Elizabeth version was tamer than the others I think, still completely wrong considering who the character is

@HienFan Couldn't agree more with this statement.

@Ross123 I agree that Elizabeth's queen is too sweet, but that's the way the character was written for that particular Alice project, so it's not fair to say that Elizabeth was miscast. Fault, if there is any, lies in the decision to transform the queen like that in the first place.

We're dealing with three different versions of the same character: the screaming, actually pretty funny Disney version; the kinder, gentler version from Care Bears; and the evil version created by American McGee, who changes in Madness Returns...

There's no contest here. Verna Felton. "OOOOFFF with their heads!" Tress MacNeille does a beautiful impression, though.

I think Verna Felton did amazing, Tress MacNeille is a great double for the voice she sounds just like the original. Can't say much about the other two, they have nothing to do with the Disney franchise, but are linked to the same character.

Let's see:
Elizabeth Hanna: Sounds too sweet.
Anni Long: Was going to say she sounded like a younger version of the queen, but then she turned all exorcist on me :0

I like Verna, but Tress is good too.

Didn't Zsa Zsa Gabor voice The Queen in the 60s Hanna-Barbara version?

I kinda like Tress MacNeille she seems to make the queen sound more evil

Anni Long is pretty scary, but I like the blustery, commanding voice of Verna Felton more.
