Melora Harte

Yes for the next Akira VC we shall do the sole female of those fairly creepy looking little children from Akira.

In the old Streamline dub (that came shortly after the movie did in Japan) 20 years ago she was voiced by Melora Harte (the wife of VA Steve "Ryu" Kramer). Melora's Kiyoko voice might not seem high enough but for some strange reason I actually don't mind it seems to kind of fit Kiyoko's rather strange appearance a bit more.

In the 2001 Pioneer dub she was voiced by VA Sandy Fox (whom is also a wife of VA namely in this case Lex Lang). Sandy is well known if not a bit typecast as doing cutesy higher voices for cutesy little girls and this is no exception as they were definitely going for a cutesy high voice and it works.

Overall I like them both but while Sandy Fox did fit more with their intention of a cutesy little girl voice but Melora Harte's voice did fit Kiyoko's appearance a bit more IMO but like I said both are good.

Oh boy... the children.

I don't wanna sound too mean on this but they were probably the worst thing about the old Streamline dub sounds fake and not very believable and Melora Harte sounds way waaayyy too old here.

Sandy Fox fit the role much more because she actually sounds like a real girl.

To be honest I prefer Melora, I know the character is young but her voice fits the old shriveled look better

Definitely Sandy Fox. She sounded like a real little girl, and her acting was incredibly intense, but also childish at the same time. Melora Harte sounded 80-years-old and incredibly forced.

@PurpleWarrior13 In all fairness, I can sorta see the approach that Melora MAY have been going for, as Kiyoko DOES look considerably old and shriveled, but her delivery and acting really killed it for me. Sandy had the occasional iffy moment, but overall her performance outclasses Melora's; it sounds much more smoother and less robotic.

No disrespect intended, but I saw you say Wendee Lee sounds older in some scenes and younger in others. How is that not an inconsistent performance?

@mvx248 No disrespect intended to you either, but next time you should use the reply button. If you had done so I could have responded much more quickly.

Anyway, you're right, Wendee Lee's performance was inconsistent overall. However, I felt she still sounded consistent enough to give a passable performance. I also felt her acting for Kei was better overall, but you're right, that was one of the few occasions (in my opinion) where Animaze did a lazy job when they could have directed her better and gotten a more consistent performance out of her.

Neither of them are perfect or even great, but at least Sandy Fox is distinct and her voice sounds closer to a little girl's. It still sounds fairly unnatural, but I kinda like that, it adds to the surrealness of the character and the movie. Like I said though, neither of them are that fitting but Sandy Fox's surreal voice and extra youthfulness has the edge.

Oh, and if Melora Harte doesn't sound inconsistent and unconvincing to you... well, I'd better just keep my mouth shut.

I hear nothing inconsistent about Harte's perfomance. She didn't grate on my nerves like Fox did and she didn't sound like she could care less about Takashi jumping into the portal.

@mvx248 but you bum the original dub ever if it terrible and the 2001 is so much superior, so their is no point even commenting because you just bum the original.

@stocko Just like you're "bumming" the 2001 dub? If you can't handle second opinions, this website is not for you.

 1 Shout Out!
Sandy Fox IS considerably higher-pitched than Melora, but compared to Melora's inconsistent delivery she sounds much more focused, like she knows what she's doing. Melora COULD have been a good Kyoko if she wasn't so all over the place: flat one moment, overexaggerated the next, and uninspired the other.
