This one is tough. I like the energy that Ben has in his delivery, but I also quite like the voice that Sam uses. In the end I'll give it to Sam because he's had more of a chance to show his skills, but Ben did a great job considering the limited voice work in the series itself.

Trevor White is the voice that I think sounds closest to how I always picture Phoenix. He sounds earnest, down-to-earth, but there's also a sense of awkwardness and naivety about him. But above all is the sense of someone who's optimistic about the law and always plows forward for the sake of justice. I like that his acting is more subtle, but everything that makes Phoenix tick is there.

Ben Judd also I think is a prime example of how you can't just determine a voice compare by how much someone gets. Five words and he nails every single one of them. The voice is one that makes perfect sense for Phoenix. And he's not even a pro voice actor. That's something that I really like. He takes what he had and makes the absolute most of it, to the moon and back. That is the mark of someone who has the exact right idea of what acting and performance are all about.

VC thoughts update

I really enjoyed Sam Riegel the most here. He is quite energetic and fun in the role yet he does add a professional air to the character.

Eric Vale is also pretty great. His energy is pretty good and he does seem to be having fun.

Trevor White also sounds good.

Ben Judd does sound good, but he doesn't leave a big impression on me.

I honestly prefer the voice Sam had, but I do think Eric's performance is a lot more rounded out and overall well done.

I get the feeling Eric isn't getting enough credit here right now. He gets to express the serious and goofy side of Phoenix to the fullest, and he does a bang up job of it.

I like Eric Vale the most, with Ben Judd as a close second. Eric gets to show the most emotion, while Ben has great energy.

I need to watch the whole show for a final judgment, but I do think from the few things I've heard for Eric Vale's Phoenix, he might be the best one out of the four.

Sam Rigel is my favorite of the bunch. I love his OBJECTION! and how stern he is with his portrayal. It also helps that he's had many games to help flesh the character out. However Eric Vale is really close behind in second place. I remember seeing him listed on the page next to Phoenix and thinking "That's an interesting choice. I've got to check this out!" And it was great all things considered since he nailed the character to a T! He’s certainly way better than Yūki Kaji who while I do enjoy in many things had always come off as a miscast for me here. Makes me wonder if he's going to be COT's go to if Sam is to busy directing Ducktales, Unikitty and every other big project he's directing...

I think Sam Riegel works perfectly for the older Phoenix, and Eric Vale does a fine job as the younger Phoenix. I would still say Sam's take edges out for me, but Eric's is definitely a great second place here IMO.

Eric Vale as Phoenix is interesting: he sounds like a cross between his Trunks and Sanji right now, but sans the gruffness. It's not the most fitting to me right now, but it is an interesting spin on things.

I've always thought Sam Riegal would be better suited to playing Apollo. Justin Cook would make an EXCELLENT Phoenix.

To me both Sam Riegel and Eric Vale both share Number 1.

Although Sam didn't get off to the best of starts he's gradually improved overtime and is just perfect in the role and amazingly enough Eric was one of the highlights in an otherwise mediocre series.

Ben Judd gave us the classic "Objection" quote so there's that and Trevor White's voice is good but I'm not really seeing Phoenix in his performance.

Right. I know it's just a trailer. But, Eric Vale might be my favorite, if he keeps this up. He left a really strong impression and I honestly think he fits better than most of these guys.

Sam Riegel is a fine voice actor who knows all to well how a typical anime protagonist should sound... alas, that's not really who Phoenix is as a character. Trevor's disgruntled everyman hits the mark far more for me, personally.
said at 11:25 PM on Sat Oct 15 2016
@calumnw Sam's voice doesn't have that kind of quality to my ears. He has a pretty lovely "everyman" voice as well.

Although I am glad that Trevor's take on Phoenix Wright works for you! He does have a nice voice as well.

Sam was weak (due to monotone delivery) in MVC but in the 3DS games he is perfect. Has that strong sense of earnestness and youthful energy you need for Phoenix.

With one of the clip updated(not sure which but I don't think it was Ben) and all the other compares out there, I think all of Phoenix voice actors actually work though I do think Trevor had the best voice, he was a bit more serious than the others but still sounds reasonably young.

Sam was alright though he could sound whiney.

Ben had barely any line but he was less whiney and very passionate,

1. Sam Riegel:

To be fair, his delivery was lackluster at best at first ("More evidence"), and his voice was a bit high pitched when he first voiced Phoenix in UMVC3 (in this clip), but he's improved dramatically in the actual games. In Duel Destinies, he adopts a normal pitched voice that imparts intelligence, wisdom, and his delivery improves substantially, but his execution of "Hold it" and "Take that" were much too soft. In Spirit of Justice, he is more or less the same as in Duel Destinies, but I feel like his "Objection" and "Take that" sound a little lower and much more energetic now. Overall, he wins this one for me at this point.

2. Ben Judd:

Even though he may have only had 5 lines to say, he definitely had the energy and power I'd imagine was needed in the performance, and was initially much better than Sam Riegel was in that aspect. His "Objection" and "Take that" are pretty much classic, and everyone who is familiar with Ace Attorney looks back fondly on his take, myself included.

3. Trevor White:

He's actually not nearly as dull as I thought he was when I initially heard his clip here in the actual game (though his "Objection" is very weak), but in comparison to the other two, he really lacks the energy needed for the role, and his voice strikes me as rather plain and generic. He's still decent, though, all things considered, and passable.

Sam Riegel truly nailed Phoenix Wright in Dual Destines, so I'd say he's first!

Ben Judd. Who I'd place in second gave us the classic "Objection!" that we all know and love, so you gotta give him credit for that!

As for Trevor White. While I do rather like the sound of his voice, his acting, while not particularity terrible by any means doesn't really make me think of "Phoenix Wright"

I really liked Sam Riegel in this role: not sure why, but it just seemed to match his personality and character pretty well. He sounded goofy, charming, funny, and yet also serious when the time called for it.

Ben is the most iconic, but I can't judge him off of what little he had to work with.

Trevor is a bit flat at times for my liking, though his voice was decent.

I quite like all three, in their own way.

Ben Judd - His voice is an incredibly iconic part of the franchise (even people who haven't played Ace Attorney know what his "OBJECTION!" is from), but he only has 3 lines total; though they were done well, it's not really much to base someone's performance off of.

Sam Riegel - It's very distinctly Riegel (he also uses the same voice for Donatello and Spider-Man, among others), but it works; especially in Dual Destinies, where he has a lot of passion in his delivery, particularly in his OBJECTIONS!

Trevor White - His voice is more or less how I think Phoenix would sound and I think he did a pretty good job overall, but he probably could've benefited from better voice direction; there were some times where he sounded a bit flat.

ben is the most iconic but a few sound clips don't really add up to much as far as performance goes.
sam i feel really gets his performance which is admirable however i fell like the voice is a bit off from what i imagine phoenix sounding like, not only that but i feel like he sounds a bit too youthful when playing phoenix in dual destinies, though the voice is much more fitting of young phoenix in marvel vs capcom 3.
trevor on the other hand is spot on what i imagined phoenix sounding like, and i feel like this performance was one of the best in the series

I'm split between Sam and Trevor. (Ben's kinda N/A since he only did an "Objection!", but it's great for what it is) Trevor sounds EXACTLY like how I always imagined Phoenix sounds, but Sam is the best as far as acting goes...

I guess I'll go with Trevor. Even if he isn't as good acting wise as Sam, I don't think he's too bad and he fits the best IMO.

@1dbad Eric Vale is my new first place. I still like Trevor's voice a bit better for Phoenix, but Eric does such a great job performance-wise that I find myself preferring it. It's a bit of a shame he'll only ever have to chance to voice Phoenix in the anime adaptations.

3. Ben's Objection is iconic, but... it's only one line. Still, gotta commend him on the energy.

2. Trevor's decent, but while he does have some of the dorkiness and charm, he lacks the energy and determination of the others, and sounds a bit bland. Not to mention the occasional flatness, like on the 'Espella'.

1. Sam delivers a good performance. Even if at times it sounds a little too recognizably Riegel, he makes up for it in spades in Dual Destinies, where he truly shines. Charming, dorky, intelligent, determined, Sam hits all the right notes, and gets my vote.

Why I enjoyed Sam's performance in the game, especially with lines like "I have more evidence." and "Something suspicious." He's just doesn't have the amount of power that Ben gave to the role. They are both great regardless.

Torn, really torn. I loved how Ben Judd, for not even being professional, voiced those five words in the series, but I absolutely adore Sam Riegel's voice for him since it sounded like basically like the voice I expected with a slight difference or two. I think I'll go give it to Sam Riegel.

I can't stand Sam Riegel's Phoenix Wright voice, he's a fine actor, sure, but I don't think he suits Phoenix at all, it sounds way too whiny.

Ben Judd is just so iconic and fitting for Phoenix Wright, to me he comes across as a bit clumsy at times, but when the chips are down he can take action, turn the tables and win the case, his voice really reflects this and his voice also sounds somewhat stern and I really like that.

So yeah, I'm going for Ben Judd here.
