To be honest, I don't have nearly as much experience with this series as I do either Tekken, Street Fighter, or the Soul franchise. XIII is the first canon KOF title I've ever played, and prior to it, I've tried my hand at '98 UM and '02: UM; both of which were remakes of their respective vanilla editions *and* "dream match" entries to boot.

Anyway, going back to XIII here, I'm not at all disappointed with the product. The game's roster is solid, its system features are tight alongside fun to get immersed in, plus story-wise the installment does a nice job concluding the Ash Saga that began in 2k3. I won't go into specifics at the risk of spoiling for those who haven't touched this yet - granted, this *is* nearly 6 (technically already that age concerning the initial arcade variant) years old at the time of writing, but it's still good to be considerate.

This paragraph alone is essentially me talking about the presentation, because... wow. KOF XIII from a visual standpoint is gorgeous: whether it be the fluidity within the character models themselves, the good chunk of personality injected into the stage backgrounds (even for locations that boast relatively darker color choices), or the art direction in itself, the graphics are pure eye candy. Special moves of any kind not only feel nice to pull off, yet look satisfying too.

At the end of the day, King of Fighters XIII is a near-perfect gem. There seriously isn't much to find fault here and the replay value for me is way up. On four additional notes, A) Voice work is excellent; B) The way that the customization mode got implemented is a treat; C) Those trials can get bent; and D) It's nice to see that the pre-battle exchanges from SvC Chaos made a return, even if it's only a Single Player thing. Easily the best part about that crossover. Soundtrack's good too, and it's cool that consumers can switch between BGM types.

Phew. Enough gushing. In the words of Neothony Geotano, decent-to-strong 9.

Only 3 VAs of noteworthy to be found here. Man, SNK used a lot of jobbers, huh?

That's pretty ignorant.

SNK was an Osaka-based company. Many of the voice actors they used as such worked for local agencies and did frequent radio and narration work, and the games were presumably recorded there. They may not have the name value of Tokyo VAs but they're all iconic and a huge part of what made the characters memorable. Terry Bogard wouldn't be nearly as beloved without Satoshi Hashimoto's enthusiastically-unchained performance. They liked hiring a handful of VAs from Tokyo, but generally they liked to keep it local. Brushing voice actors off based on name value rather than skill is pretty low.

Waaaay better than MVC 3(although I have to suffer from playing the XBOX360 controller which is NOT meant for fighting games)

Would have been nice to have the English XII cast back though

@HienFan The arcade version actually did have an English voice track option. It had most of the same VAs as XII and some new ones for a few of the new characters. They took it out for the console version though.

@NCZ Somehow my arcade never had the arcades for this game just XI and XII to tell but oh well

 3 Shout Outs!
More entertaining than MvC3. Don't really care what ANYONE says.

@-VEGA- Completely agreed. This was definitely one of the best KOF games, not to mention one of the most balanced, fun, hard-hitting fighters I've ever played. MVC3 was okay, but it couldn't live up to 2.
