Sonic Adventure 2

Sonic Adventure 2

Sonic Adventure 2

Release Date in USA: June 19, 2001

Franchise: Sonic the Hedgehog
Remade early in 2002 for Nintendo GameCube as Sonic Adventure 2: Battle.

This game was released to commemorate the Sonic series' tenth anniversary (though it was released four days early in North America). Coincidentally, Steve Brodie died on the same day as the NA release. This was his last Sonic performance.

I have so many memories from playing this game alone. I got it for Christmas one year from my uncle and then aunt at the time. and it was the first Adventure game I got. then I bought the first one after. it's kinda strange that I got Sonic Adventure 2 first, then bought the first Sonic Adventure after.

Ah, this was part of my childhood! :)

Storywise, this game was excellent. I really liked Sonic's personality in this game, a cool and fun attitude but also serious. Eggman's portrayal was also brilliant, he felt very menancing and also threatening to Sonic co. I like how he also made an attempt to kill Sonic in order for his plan to succeed. As a new character, Shadow came across as an interesting one with an emotional background in this game, and it was also nice to see other characters doing their own thing.

However gameplay wise, this was a bit of a mixed bag. The Sonic and Shadow levels are great but the hunting and shooting stages go from decent to mediocore. The emerald radar was a bit broken in the hunting stages and felt like a chore, I would have preferred if it was like the radar in Adventure where you could find the shards in any order or even all at once. The shooting stages worked well for Eggman but not for Tails, his gameplay should have been on foot like the first one. The shooting stages also worked better in SA1. Shoehorning Tails and Rouge into the game might not have been the best idea, I also didn't like how Tails' character development from SA1 sort of disappeared and Amy was rather annoying until the end.

I just wish there was more balance in all 3 gameplays but it was still enjoyable until the last few levels. The soundtrack is great and full of catchy tunes! I love how every character has their own theme and this game definitely had the best multiplayer mode out of all the Sonic games so far. As for the voice acting, this is the best from the majority of the original cast. Deem Bristow and Ryan Drummond are on top form as Sonic and Eggman! Definitely their best performance as both characters in this game. Marc Biagi also gives a very chilling performance as Prof Gerald. Scott and Lani however are just too emotionless and monotone while Humphrey is just awkward but I think both Scott and David improved a lot in Heroes.

While this isn't my most favourite Sonic game, it still and will always have a special place in my heart, this is a game that I can go back to on occasion and I get more enjoyment out of it than recent ones such as Colors and Generations. I still think this game has aged well, my opinion on the gameplay is the only thing that's changed. I just feel the elements of SA1 were sorely missed which made it inferior. It is still enjoyable and I have fond memories of playing this as a kid. I'd definitely put it with one of the good or if not best Sonic games.

This will always be my favorite Sonic game (with Sonic Adventure and the original Sonic close behind). I had the Battle version for the GameCube, and me and my brother would play this all the time. I especially loved the story, game play, and the music. The Chao world was also super fun to explore. I remember we had one that we powered up into a Hero Chao that lasted us for years, it seems.

Favorite Sonic game to date! Grew up with the Genesis games and Generations is awesome, but nothing holds a candle to this for me.
