I really enjoy this show but after watching season 4 there are two complaints I have about it one they really need to stop sidelining Keith and treat him more as a leader and progress his character and humor can be not needed at times for example the Voltron show episode but again I do enjoy this show but those are my complaints

I wonder if this version of Prince Lotor has a desire to marry Princess Allura.

@UK-Otaku The 80's series while very dated, had it's own unique charm towards it. Also Peter Cullen as Coran & King Alfor were very solid performances from the 80's series.

So, while we wait for season three, they're actually adapting the comic book tie-ins for the show as motion comics, complete with voice acting from the cast! Check them out:

I really wish the series brought back Peter Cullen. The guy is a legend and made the original series so epic, why not bringing him back? He's still active and kicking ass you know? Wish they stop focused on bringing each time more actors from television and cinemas instead of people who really do voice acting as a job.

@Francesco92e While I can't argue that Peter Cullen would have been a great addition to this new Voltron show, you have to understand that sometimes the voice directors, want something different. That goes for voice actors as well.

@Shaun Ince Also doesn't help that his agent the past few years has been incredibly stingy with picking roles.

@skeletonking1234 Yeah. They have him so intent on voicing Optimus Prime, that he hasn't had more opportunities to do VO in other shows. Which is a shame when you consider how much range Peter Cullen actually has.

Does anyone know if the Netflix version airing in Japan ever got / gets a dub? Or is it aired with the English voices? (As a Finnish person, I love most dubs, even the crappy ones - once you've dealt with Agapio, you can take anything.)

@batcool To be fair, "seasons" 1 and 2 are actually a combined 26 episode season. Netflix just splits them in half to release content faster. Trollhunters was an exception.

Wasn't that impressed by the first episode, but starting with the second episode the series has picked up quite a bit. I'm not quite sure I'd say "I love it" yet, but it has potential and I'm looking forward to seeing if it reaches it.

I have a feeling Shiro will decide to step down as the Black Lion's pilot and pass on the title to Keith while Lance gets promoted to being the Red Lion's pilot and Princess Allura promoted to be the Blue Lion's pilot.

@vgiannell5 I actually think it will be cleaner than that and Allura will take over the Black Lion. She has a lot of leadership potential and it would be a neat way to pay homage to the old series while also doing something new.

@Food4thought Originally, all these characters were Japanese. Given that Dreamworks is a Hollywood-based company with a sh!t-ton of money, would you want them all to be voiced by Japanese people (or even non-Japanese Asians)?

 2 Shout Outs!
Finished watching the first season and I figured I'd give my thoughts here without spoiling anything.

When I watched the first episode, I wasn't sure if I was going to like it or not because there were some parts of it that put me off, the pacing was too fast (which improves in later episodes) and the use of gag anime facial expressions during otherwise serious scenes, particularly from Hunk, really ruins scenes for me. Teen Titans was a series that employed such facial expressions but during serious moments they withheld from them completely, so in that aspect I found it distracting seeing how it was used here.

Going in, Hunk was probably my least favorite character, he felt like he was being comic relief during serious moments, which was the main problem I had with Bolin in LoK, they were both characters that I felt took me out of the action and moment of the series, and I found their antics more annoying than funny. I also had the same problem with Lance as well, albeit to a much lesser extent. They're both more or less Bolin and Sokka transplanted into this series.

As the series went on however I grew to like Hunk because of his minor character arc later on, as it showed that he can become a serious character.

And the mice? I really can't stand the whole cute animal sidekick schtick that the writers love to use. It got old in Avatar and it gets old here too.

Pidge and Allura ended up being my favorite protagonists. Pidge's character arc to find her brother and father ended up being one of my favorite parts of the show and Allura learning to let go of her planet and its past was very touching.

I feel like most of the male characters were pretty bland in comparison. I already covered Hunk. Lance is a dumb flirt, he's Sokka without the smarts. Keith's kind of an aloof bad boy and nothing else. I didn't get his reasoning for rescuing Shiro out of the blue in the first episode. Shrio's struggles with PTSD are interesting, but I feel like his interactions with other characters aside from Pidge don't go very far. He's probably the most interesting of the male characters so far given his past as a captive. Coran's "comic relief" but I just didn't find him funny half the time, same problem with Hunk.

All that being said, the show features spectacular vocal performances from everyone, especially from the main villains, Neil Kaplan as Zarkon and Cree Summer as Haggar. Kind of a shame that the villains are one-dimensional compared to the protagonists (at least as of now).
said at 5:16 PM on Sun Oct 16 2016
@Food4thought This does have slight spoilers in it just as an fyi, but the rest of the comments also have that in it as well. If someone were just a few episodes in they wouldn't know the gender of Pidge or anything about her brother and father. Not a huge deal because just a few comments down spoils that part anyway.

As a whole though I liked your view on the show and can see where you're coming from with it. I personally like how it's going so far but did share some of the feelings you had with how hunk and others would be through the series. I have to say Pidge so far is my fav, Keith is my 2nd and I hope they develop him more but that's just because Keith was my fav when I was a kid watching this growing up so I'm biased on that lol.

@tamercodi Implying that changing a character's gender is "messing" with them? Unless their gender is a vital, key, iconic and important factor to their character's overall relevance and story, their gender is inconsequential.

To me, nothing is gained or lost by Pidge being a male over being a female.

@tamercodi And what of his character has actively benefited from being male SO FAR in the franchise? What part of Pidge's character is VITAL that they be male? What has being male accomplished for the character that being female couldn't also accomplish?

I did Jeremy as Lance so far, though I'm kind'a iffy about Bex as Pidge. I felt the role should have been given to an actual child like Stuart Allan or Grant Palmer.

I think the biggest anticipation of all definitely goes to Neil Kaplan as Zarkon. His voice and neutral speech pattern pretty much refines the character here. Though I can't help but feel his voice reminds me of another voice actor, Kevin Michael Richardson or maybe Fred Tatasciore? Ah well.
said at 9:44 AM on Sat May 14 2016
@Troodon2 I think Bex is perfect for how they're approaching Pidge in this version of Voltron being far younger.

I've heard some rumours and theories that Pidge might actually be a girl disguising herself as a boy. I doubt it's true but again it's just a theory. It'd be interesting if that was the case, still with that said it's not really a stretch for Pidge to have a female VA, in the original Go Lion, he was voiced by a woman in Japanese (Masako Nozawa).

I do agree about Jeremy and Neil, they sound fantastic from what I've heard in the trailers. It's great to hear Jeremy in a lower registry.

I wish they would have showed a bit of Steven Yeun's Keith. I'm sure it won't be that far off from his Avatar Wan, still I think this is one of the most promising casting choices based of his work as Wan.
said at 5:56 PM on Mon Sep 26 2016
@Troodon2 You know, it's pretty interesting how Japan skews more towards female VA's for young male characters, while Hollywood skews more toward adult males (both use actual children on occasion).

It's some sort of cultural difference, but I may make a thread on this.
said at 9:52 PM on Sun Oct 2 2016
@Troodon2 "Though I can't help but feel his voice reminds me of another voice actor, Kevin Michael Richardson or maybe Fred Tatasciore? Ah well."

It's the same feeling with me. His voice is slightly lighter than Fred's, but it's got a similar texture to it. He sounds a LOT like KMR in his "announcer" voice, like at the beginning of his Nerdguments Podcast.
said at 11:35 AM on Wed May 11 2016
Well based on the trailer, While I like Jeremy as Lance (and am neutral to Tyler as Hunk), Bex and Kim and not giving off good first impressions as Pidge and Allura. Bex's yelling doesn't sound convincing and Pidge just sounds like a girl (unless that's what they're going for in which case only the yelling was bad) and Kimberly's faux-british accent is incredibly forced and stilted, which makes me wonder why they bothered giving her an accent at all. I'll wait to hear more of it when the series comes out before I write anything off completely, but they didn't exactly put their best foot forward there.

This voice cast is just too awesome.

Steven Yeun is totally going to nail Keith. His performance as Avatar Wan kind of feels like a modernized version of Neil Ross's take. So this casting should work really well.

Jeremy Shada as Lance, not sure how he's going to approach it. It'll sound weird if he does his voice for Finn as him, hope we get to hear him in a much older sounding voice, I mean he's almost 20 now. His character though seems like he'll come off as very annoying very fast, hopefully he'll be a reverse Mako and actually grow as a person.

Tyler Labine, I don't know too much of him but he seems like a guy who will fit Hunk.

Bex Taylor-Klaus. It's Bullet from The Killing, oh wow. It's interesting how her first voice acting gig is voicing a boy character. I think the casting of a woman as Pidge, it suppose to homage Masako Nozawa voicing Pidge in the original Go Lion.

Josh Keaton as Shiro/Sven. Interesting approach they went here with the character, homaging the original Go Lion version of the character. He's going to be an excellent fit as him.

Kimbely Brooks as Allura, I think for what they're going for she's perfect for the part.

Rhys Darby as Coran, should be interesting considering the creators of the show are likening him to Varrick from Korra.

Neil Kaplan as Zarkon. Great to finally see him get a new major role again. It's been way too long IMO.

I think this series might just be great. I hope so at least.
said at 11:05 AM on Fri Apr 1 2016
@Autovolt While GoLion is no Macross, methinks the major rise of CrunchyRoll & "free" anime being widely available to kids, as well as the rising trend to "cultural diversity, acceptance, & what-have-you" have maybe spurred these homages...& I'm really digging that.

said at 5:41 PM on Fri Apr 8 2016
@Hayworth All the same, that's far from bad! Kaplan to me is definitely one of those voice actors who'd fit right in for American Animation, he's always had that potential in video games, and even several anime he did. So it's good he's branching out more and we get to have a break from the usual top dogs like Steve Blum or Fred Tatasciore.
said at 12:20 PM on Sat Apr 30 2016
Haha, "bad" was probably the wrong way to put it. More like "unabashedly nerdy"
said at 9:46 PM on Sun Oct 2 2016
@TylerMirage This is ages late, but if I wasn't clear, I was trying to say that Neil regularly participated in Saban dubs of Japanese stuff back in the day, like Digimon & Super Sentai (aka Power Rangers)...& at the time, Saban paid like crap, although he remembers these jobs fondly & generally found it a good experience.

Having developed his career as a VA, it is a cool coincidence that he finds success in a show based on a franchise that was originally Japanese-based, but with the backing of Dreamworks & under the proud banner of the great Andrea Romano.

It's the same with Steve Blum actually. If you've seen ATLA Korra, he got that role as Amon due to having played Spike in Cowboy Bebop. It's nice that at least the showrunners (if not the networks) recognize the mass of non-Hollywood animation.

Though about the cast themselves:
I'm a fan of Steven ever since Walking Dead though he's a little soft spoken so I'm curious how he'll do as the leader. Although I'm a little worried now about Glen if Steven is taking another recurring job in a series.

Jeremey Shada has me curious, this could be a good way for him to break out from just being known as Finn the Human.

Tyler got typecasted here but he should do fine none the less.

Don't know much about Bex but Pidge being played a woman makes sense.

Always happy to see Josh Keaton.

Kimberly should be okay.

Don't know much about Neil as an actor but he should be okay.

The one thing that has my attention is Rhys Darby, the kinda goofball comedian I've seen on @midnight, playing a role that Peter Cullen once did. Maybe they'll change the king to be more comical or maybe Rhys will surprise me.
So I am curious, I love Avatar but didn't like Korra so I'm curious on how they'll handle this series.

I wish I could be interested in some of the Avatar crew working together on something new, but considering nothing that any one of them has done since then has reached the same level of enjoyment factor (Korra being a particularly resounding disappointment), I'm beginning to think the original Avatar series was a lucky fluke. Even if Dreamworks' involvement didn't damper my enthusiasm already, I'd rather keep my expectations low.
