While this show came out 9 years before my time, it's one of the few 80's cartoons that I'm the most familiar with(the others being the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series from 87 & the first GI Joe cartoon )
Still, this was the cartoon that introduced me to Peter Cullen & his great performance as Optimus Prime.
Sure it has the typical 80's cheese that most cartoons back then had, but it was also part of the charm.
Also while going through the cast for this show, I had completely forgotten that Paul Eiding was in this show. I'm more familiar with his roles in Ben 10 & Metal Gear Solid, so that's cool to see that he was in it. Frank Welker did contribute the most when it comes to the sum total of roles he had in the show. Always liked his voice for Megatron.

@Shaun Ince Yeah, some stories were pretty flawed, (although I do think the writing improved when season three came in despite some awful episodes like Call of the Primitives and the Return of Optimus Prime two-parter) but the voice performances were always top-notch.
My favorite performers in this show were always Christopher Collins, Dick Gautier, Johnny Haymer, Aron Kincaid, Ed Gilbert, Roger C. Carmel, Roger Behr, Terry McGovern, Steve Bulen and Regis Cordic.
Chris' Starscream and Dick's Rodimus and Hot Rod in particular are quite possibly my favorite performances in this show.

I'll admit that while this show is cheesy and quite flawed, I can't help but be entertained by it. Besides, the voice cast is great.

I love the first two seasons of the cartoon but the third season is just so boring and meaningless. I love Blurr, Sky-Lynx, Metroplex, Trypticon and Ultra Magnus but for the rest I wish they just retconneted all of it.

@Francesco92e
Season 3 has some of the most legitimately fascinating episodes of the series, some really cool concepts and characters, and I like that it makes more of an attempt at world-building and character-driven storylines, but a lot of it is pretty bad. What I never liked was how pretty much every episode had wacky new planets and aliens in them that came off as gimmicky and didn't really blend well with the series. I never liked the episodes in season 2 that did things like that either.
Also they had Akom do the majority of it so the result is that it has by far the worst animation.

It's even worse if you're coming off of the absolutely gorgeous movie. The drop in animation quality is staggering. Of course, the terrible truth is that the movie's box office failure is partially to blame for the heavy use of AKOM for that season.

@Nightmare Crusher
Oh, absolutely. The whiplash you get from the movie directly leading into the opening Five Faces of Darkness special in season 3 is by far the best example of it. I had such a hard time watching it because the animation is just atrocious.
You really could make the case that the movie is the best Transformers has ever looked, to this day. It still has its flaws like the show, but overall, it really is stunning. I'd never made the connection that the bad box office receipts were why Toei's role was downplayed after season 2, but that actually does make a lot of sense. Real shame.

@NCZ Although animation quality isn't everything. Headmasters is better looking than any season of this show, Toei animated the whole thing themselves, but it's a pretty terrible show.
It's an interesting contrast actually. Season 3 had interesting ideas with poor execution while Headmasters was well made, but uninteresting

Frank welker did a LOT of voices in this show.
Replysaid at 7:28 AM on Mon May 8 2017
@Voiceactorfan1 If you weren't capable to voice at least 3-4 characters you were basically not allowed in this show xd But yes, Frank is the one who did most characters.

Seasons 1 and 2 were really good, but I seriously prefer seasons 3 and 4 for exactly the same reason I prefer season 8 of the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon:
The stories take a much darker turn, yet they still manage to keep the sense of humor on the characters. It may have some pretty awful episodes (The Return of Optimus Prime two-parter) and some badly executed ones (Starscream's Ghost, Only Human and Call of the Primitives), but the rest of the episodes are just fantastic.
My favorite episodes of the entire show would have to be Ghost in the Machine, The Burden Hardest to Bear, The Rebirth three-parter, The Dweller in the Depths, The Ultimate Weapon, The Big Broadcast of 2006, The Gambler, Starscream's Brigade, Grimlock's New Brain and Masquerade.

This cast is awesome, It's a shame quite a few of them are deceased or too old to do Voice Acting anymore.

@IamOptimusPrime2020 Even more bad news, John Stephenson who voiced Windcharger, Thundercracker, Huffer, Alpha Trion, and Kup passed away last month.

@IamOptimusPrime2020 To be fair though even though some of the cast have past on as well as retired they have left an impact on our lives. It's a shame they didn't' live long enough to see Transformers evolve into something great like it has now but their involvement means something a great deal.

That's a lot of toys--I mean characters. :-P
Replysaid at 10:39 AM on Sat Mar 2 2013
@TheVengeanceKnight The same could be said of all the other Transformers series, actually.
Replysaid at 7:36 PM on Sat Mar 2 2013
@NCZ But this one seems to have WAY more than others. :-P
Replysaid at 8:19 PM on Sat Mar 2 2013
@TheVengeanceKnight From what little I know of the franchise, characters would regularly be introduced to promote their corresponding toy and then be killed off when they're not needed anymore and/or a new toy comes along to take their place. That sort of thing happens when a toy company is calling the shots. Why else do you think Optimus keeps kicking the bucket?
Replysaid at 8:30 PM on Sat Mar 2 2013
@TheVengeanceKnight With that being said, the later series did get better at downplaying the fact that they exist to sell toys.
Replysaid at 8:37 PM on Sat Mar 2 2013
@NCZ Yeah, that's what I was kinda alluding to when I commented at the number of toys--I mean characters this show had. :-P
Replysaid at 8:26 AM on Mon Mar 11 2013
@CatsTuxedo Characters weren't killed off regularly in the show. They just made the movie into one huge massacre.

@TheVengeanceKnight Guys, I was just making a joke. No need to start a war over it.

What are you talking about with updating this page? This page is one of the most complete pages on the site - the only thing we haven't added to this page is sound clips for every character...there are over 250 characters here and we will add sound clips eventually lol
Replysaid at 7:26 PM on Fri Mar 1 2013
@OptimusSolo
Howdy...I think I can assist with the sound clips...Is there any parameters you'd like to stay within as far as content goes? I've noticed you've put some pretty iconic quotes up there for some of the big guns. Grimlock - "Me Bash Brains!" etc..

@Darthpacino The more iconic the better! Must be in MP3 format and must be somewhere between 15 and 55 seconds. :) Send me a PM in the forums if you gather stuff or have questions!

Show is now up to 345 characters and just got finished making sure every character has a new high quality screen cap off of the Matrix of Leadership DVD set...Enjoy! (I still have to re-order a few of the recurring roles sorry)

Just got done adding over a dozen voice actors to this cast. Unless I missed one, every character on here should be credited to their american Voice Artist. (With the lone exception of Swerve who had no lines in the show). Next I will work on adding the characters that are missing!
Replysaid at 12:20 PM on Fri Jan 8 2010
The cast has now been arranged according to how many lines each character had throughout the series. (This was done after the sub-groups were formed based on another criteria and human lines have not been counted yet and there are a couple dozen characters that still need to be added)

Just letting everyone know, this page will be getting a complete overhaul in the very near future with almost all new pictures and sound clips for every character that has lines!!
