 3 Shout Outs!
I don't like to bash 4Kids since they're defunct and all now, plus they don't dub anything save for the Yu-Gi-Oh Series at this point as "4KMedia" under Konami, but...I feel Sonic X was one of the worst dubs the company ever did, and I also think the voice cast was also one of the poorer ones to come from the company, as well. If it weren't for One Piece, this would be my least favorite dub to come from the company, bar none.

My opinion on the dub is the following...

The dub intro is pretty catchy, actually, I was perfectly fine with that much- not great, but not terrible, either.

The script, an absolute mess, really, so much was mistranslated, there's heavy editing as with the Yu-Gi-Oh dubs as well, OST is changed, etc.

At the time, Jason Griffith was just a fledgling voice actor, and his acting skills were honestly pretty poor- he couldn't emote well, with a very stilted and over-the-top delivery to boot, more or less imitating Ryan Drummond to varying degrees of success and failure. This is most evident in his Sonic performance. However, I do think his Shadow was less awkward to listen to, though he had the opposite issue there, where he was too flat at times. I do think his Sonic is better here than in Sonic '06, though, although that applies to every cast member.

Kathleen Delaney's Rouge is both age inappropriate as well as monotone in terms of acting, Lisa Ortiz's Amy voice is somewhat akin to her Lina Inverse voice, but made considerably more nasal, Dan Green's Knuckles is far too deep and gruff for my taste here, and really, I could complain all day, but you get the point. The acting was a notable step down here from what the Adventures Sonic cast had done prior to this cast's work, to me.

There are two dub voices I did like, however: Suzanne Goldish's Chris was well done, as was Mike Pollock's Eggman, both delivered pretty good and solid performances, so it's not entirely without some decency....but Sonic X is an Anime that should be watched in Japanese overall, although I won't lie, Chris Thorndyke is somewhat of a jerk at times in that Version as well, so it also has its issues.

@WrightWay i heard that 4kids cut out Molly`s death and plus led to a scene of shadow placing a flower in her grave thats 4kids for you atleast with that change they didnt say molly was sent to the shadow realm

@WrightWay If you watch the earliest episodes, you can tell Griffith took direction from Jaleel White's Sonic, not Drummond's.
said at 9:45 PM on Tue Nov 14 2017
Certainly, but I feel he was somewhat being directed to sound like Drummond a bit later.

At any rate, I can say Griffith did get a little better as Sonic in his last few games, so I suppose he does have that going for him (and I do like some of his work, just not too much with Sonic).

I love this series and was really cool and true represention of Sonic and its characters also prefer this way more than Sonic boom

The dub is ok. Not bad, but not especially great, either. Overall, it's enjoyable to me, with the exception of Ella's voice (sorry Eggman, but please try not to force yourself to become a female Latino helper as well xD). Oh, and also the fact that Chris went reverse puberty in S3. I was honestly expecting to hear Michael as adult Chris for the remainder of the series. It was honestly a major letdown.

I'd give anything to let Sega give the blessing on making an uncut redub using the current games' VAs.

@SmartyBoyboy Well maybe if they change the voice of Shadow it would be ok.

@Ichigo341578926 Maybe recast Amy too?
said at 3:44 PM on Mon May 2 2016
@SmartyBoyboy Maybe. I mainly said Shadow because Kirk Thornton's 1950's gang member esk voice bugged me more.
said at 12:17 PM on Thu May 26 2016
@Ichigo341578926 Actually, I like Cindy Robinson's attempt to emulate Minnie Mouse EVEN LESS than Kirk's take.

Was this dub THAT bad? I'll admit, it wasn't superior and it was annoying sometimes, but it wasn't awful. I actually liked this dub. I actually love most(not all) of the 4kids sonic voices actually. I actually think they're better than some of the current Sonic voices.

@Joel the Pokekid Which of the 4Kids actors in the Sonic series do you like particular?

@Marusero Jason Griffith. I love him as Sonic and Shadow! In my opinion, he does alot better than Sonic, Shadow, and Jet's(even though he wasn't in this show) current voice actors.
said at 8:30 PM on Sun Mar 13 2016
@Joel the Pokekid Agreed. Jason had long ways to go with those three characters (especially Sonic, who is my favorite character).

@Joel the Pokekid Dan Green is my favourite voice for Knuckles the Echidna

Mike Pollock was also great as Dr Eggman.

I agree with the people who thought this was one of 4Kids' worst dubs, heck, even as a kid, I hated it. I guess it was still better than that train-wreck that was One Piece's dub, though, if you ask me.

That said, at the same time, Sonic X wasn't a very good show to begin with in my opinion when I watched the Japanese version, 4Kids' didn't really change much with this Series other than with their generic music replacement and silly paint edits, but what I find low quality about their version of Sonic X was the voice cast and direction-- that really sucked badly as far as the dub goes in my book.

@Dr.Who I do feel most of the voice cast inproved with better ADR Direction in the Video games.

Andrew Rannells is not a very good ADR director.... I won't deny that.
said at 7:39 PM on Thu Dec 15 2016
@EPA Deane
Apparently, he also directed Kirby: Right Back At Ya! That was pretty well done.

@GreenGoblin75 Oh. In that case, if I could change my statement above I would instead say "Andrew Rannells' ADR direction on this series was not that great...... I Won't deny that"

Dan Green as Knuckles is actually my favourite voice for the character.

I'm in a minority when saying this i think that Media Blasters should rerun this show with the Japanese soundtrack not the 4kids one, having uncut scenes, having a better settings on arcs, return of the eyecatch cards with fully translated text, remastered animations, modify and perfect the sound effects and much more.

Who's up with this idea? I sure am.

Also, I feel like I'm the only one who feels Indifferent about Chris.
said at 3:03 PM on Fri Feb 13 2015
@SteelEthlan Even if that were a halfway-plausible fantasy, I really don't think the franchise as a whole is in any condition for this endeavor to matter in the slightest; it's safe to say that anyone with clout who would be able to do this will turn a blind eye after the Big Roadkill Kiss.

@XxDream Really? I thought this was one of their worst dubs. Pokemon and Kirby: Right Back At Ya were probably their best efforts (Yu-Gi-Oh seemed decent enough but I've never seen the Japanese version to compare).

@NCZWell it's just my opinion I just miss the 4kids cast
said at 3:27 PM on Fri Aug 24 2012
@XxDream Unless you're a die-hard Sonic fan, I'm assuming you haven't seen Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh, Kirby Right Back At Ya, or F-Zero GP Legend. Heck, there's also the 2003 TMNT series (which 4Kids worked on as well, though it's not anime).

 5 Shout Outs!
Next to Sonic 06 and Sonic Genesis, I can say that Sonic X is a downfall of the franchise... At least the 4kids dub, anyway. I remember getting pretty stoked for this as a child when I caught it on Fox Box (what Toonzai was at the time around 2002/2003/2004), and yes, you could say I was a fan... But as I grew older, I realized that 4Kids were brainwashing me.

First off, I don't like how some of the characters are a bit dull in comparison to their game portrayals (Shadow's an exception), second, I recommend the Japanese version because even though I'm not a weaboo, Sonic X is one of the anime shows I will prefer in Japanese (next to Blue Dragon), third, the story elements take place in between Sonic Adventure 1 and 2, Battle, and Advance 3, but altogether, it got a bit butchered here compared to the games. Fourth and last, other than any of the GUN members, Dr. Robotnik, or The President, were much of any of the other human characters necessary??? They were more foil, in my opinion, if anything...

With that said, Sonic X is both mediocre (Japanese) and downright atrocious (4Kids). Sonic Team did have involvement here, and I wished back then that they put more development and all-around thought into this...

One more thing: Nazo is pretty sick, and I wish he were an actual character in the Sonic Universe, and not just a fanfiction.

I agree with most of what you said. The 4kids dub of Sonic X was downright pitiful and poorly executed. I also noticed that around the time the dub came out, the games started to tank (4kids seems to ruin anything they touch). Also, like u said, Japanese Sonic X is not much from an anime fan perspective. Though, from a Sonic fan's POV, Jap. Sonic X is quite good. I liked the opening, endings, insert songs, and music from a few the games. The show's not SatAM, but it's still pretty good.
said at 7:54 PM on Sat Oct 15 2011
@PerfectSe7en I only ever liked SatAM and the Sonic OVA movie, despite some thoughts about the both of them. At least the Japanese version (like I said before) of Sonic X was decent to most, but for me, it's not working out. So in all fairness, I can halfway agree with what you said.

Other than that, just to get off topic, how does ANYBODY truly consider Bakugan, Beyblade, or Pokemon anime? I think Bakugan is just a premature ripoff of Yu-Gi-Oh! and Pokemon together, and the latter two have gotten significantly worse over the years. I missed things like Cyborg 009, Mobile Fighter G Gundam, and even Yu Yu Hakusho... {sigh}

I like this show but in Japanese like when Sonic says S**t and my only dislike of the show was Chris overall. plus the show had watered down portrayal of Sonic Adventure 1 2 and Sonic Battle/Advance 3. The last season I lost all interest though.
