 1 Shout Out!
This was the first "hardcore" anime I ever got into (ie. something not on TV like DBZ, Pokemon, etc). I was 12 when I first watched it, and it was the most bizarre thing I had ever seen, but I have come to really adore it. It has a lot of deep themes and messages, extremely layered characters, and it's really fascinating to explore. It has a lot of rewatchability because you discover new things every time you see it.

The dub is pretty underwhelming in the beginning, but it comes into it's own later on. Rachael Lillis as Utena is one of my all-time favorite anime performances.

Utena is such a fantastic anime, but I do think it would benefit from a redub. I'd love to hear a more modern take on it.

@1dbad There's really no point in such an endeavor since, as far as I know, there's no content to be added (like Escaflowne) or removed (DBZ Kai) that would require a new dub for consistency's sake.

Besides, from the apparent lack of jabs or complaints, it would seem the dub as is works just fine.

@CatsTuxedo I realize that.

Really? I've ran across quite a few complaints myself. The most common of which seems to be that the majority of the cast was awfully wooden, and they didn't always do the best job with lip-synching. (there are cases of talking over closed lip flaps) The dub definitely had a talented cast of actors, but it seemed the voice direction was what ultimately held it back.

@1dbad It's just when I usually picture calls for a redub, it's mostly centered on high-profile works that really REALLY needed one like Sailor Moon or One Piece that people clamor loudly for. Utena simply doesn't seem like the kind of series that's visible enough or has a bad enough dub to warrant a newer take, even putting aside the whole added/excised content issue.

@CatsTuxedo Understandable. I doubt Utena will get a redub anyway, since they already missed some good opportunities for such a thing. And that's fine! It doesn't need one as bad as some other franchises out there. I was just saying it was something I would like to see, rather than something I think has to happen.

@1dbad I still say that the dub is fine as is. I could only accept a redub if they would bring the cast back to fix a few lines or two and some mispronunciations. Besides, I still think Rachael and the others did a fantastic job in this dub.

@A-Log Perhaps I wrote off the dub too soon. I recently discovered it didn't start picking up for most people until 14-onward, so maybe I need to give it a second shot.
