 3 Shout Outs!
Finally saw this the other day with a friend, I couldn't follow the plot for the life of me, but the animation is flippin' beautiful. I didn't even know it'd be this smooth and fluid! I'd totally rewatch this thing again just for the animation alone.

@Metabad Oh yeah also, I forgot to mention that it turns out I downloaded two songs from this soundtrack years ago. "Little Busters" and "Ride on Shooting Star" I didn't even know they were part of this show, so let's just say that hearing those again was a pleasant surprise, it brought back a lot of memories and it was nice finally hearing where they were originally from.

I've seen this anime so many times via reruns on Toonami, love Haruko and the over the top action and comedy, and I can remember so many moments and lines yet I could not tell you the plot of this anime even if I just watched it

 2 Shout Outs!
This is an interesting show, one that's at least worth watching. I especially enjoy it's awesome soundtrack, and it's also neat that it gave us Kari Wahlgren and Stephanie Sheh on the voice-acting side of things!

I tried to watch this, but I couldn't get through it. Sorry, Kari. :-(

 2 Shout Outs!
It was around eleven o'clock and I was sitting on my bed when the drugs began to kick in. The strange thing was that I wasn't ON any drugs. I had never so much as touched crack, weed, or alcoholic beverages in my life.

I had discovered this experience in the place I would least suspect...an anime series. And if the world of drug addicts is anything like what I saw on Netflix last night, it will be a world that I'd sooner stay away from.

THIS is my experience from watching FLCL, or "Fooly Cooly".

Gainax always seems to make great quality anime (although this was more of an OVA if anything) with deep stories... Maybe except Panty & Stocking, to be exact. This is ABSOLUTELY no exception. FLCL makes pop culture references that are actually more fluid, if anything, and that's saying something compared to the more modern anime that try too hard to do that FLCL has done (Lucky Star rings a bell, no?) It also has great characters, unique humor, a real kickass OST, and most of all, it only has six episodes... Yes, we all know that was a bummer, but what would you expect in the future? A generic continuation of this full-fledged OVA? I personally recommend FLCL for all those who are interested in incredibly deep, yet fun stories and don't go too paranoid over the seriousness of shonen franchises, these days.

FLCL was, and is still the greatest anime Adult Swim has ever heard in history. If you disagree, speak now or forever hold your breath.

(after watching all six episodes) WHAT THE HECK WAS THAT?!

Seriously, this anime made me feel drunk or stoned (possibly both). It was like a Ren and Stimpy cartoon only it was throwing so much at me and expecting me to catch up with it.

This series, I think, is overrated and overblown.

You see "Wolf's Rain"? THAT was a deep story. You see "FLCL"? THAT was a red herring PRETENDING to be a story.

@Sarge Ray Well, that IS your opinion... and you're pretty much entitled to it.

Though on the other hand, you probably never saw this anime with a different (and more intriguing) reaction altogether which didn't have to do with feeling high or drunk. I actually expected stuff like this when I watched Gurren Lagann because.... this is Gainax, and it seems to me that they hardly know how to hold back.

You also have to keep in mind that FLCL wasn't meant to be as dark or serious as, say... Wolf's Rain (the anime I've never seen, yet you pointed out that it had a deep story); in fact, its off-the-wall and mindblowing humor was FLCL's key area.

Cowboy Bebop was definitely one of the greatest shows Adult Swim has aired (according to them), but was it the best anime? Not... really. They actually said Fooly Cooly was.

And yes, I can agree that this series is overrated and "overblown"... but at the same time, I still think that you look at this under a critical light. But overall, I suppose what you're talking about appears to make sense... :)

So, I shouldn't think or analyze what I watch and, instead, just stop thinking? Sorry, but that's not how I work

I DID keep in mind that it wasn't dark and serious. What I also kept in mind was that people kept complimenting it for a deep story, a deep story that (to me, anyway) didn't exist.

The low end of it? I expected something more...well...just that. MORE.

@Ninjaman15 I'm very pleased to see you are defending the artistic merits of this series. I admit, FLCL fans tend to not present their arguments in the most mature way when they talk to newcomers about it, but I feel that this little gem's finer points need more attention.

I freaking loved the coming-of-age themes in the story. A lot of films try really hard, but this is one of the only stories in that category that managed to make it's way into the heart of my inner-child. I loved it's messages about not being a faker, not trying to grow up too fast, and how it just encapsulates the confusion and pains of growing up without being super preachy and having fun.

Those are some of the obvious things, but they really did use some great symbolism that was less "OMG, LOOK HOW ARTSY WE ARE!!! TFHRRWVVNRWHGONEOFHGO!!!11!!" and more just making something that people could chill out while watching and reflect on the goofiness of life. It's also great because it brought a lot of attention to Kari Wahlgren who I just love as Haruko. Her performance was hilarious and she perfectly captured Haruko's deceptive but fun personality. And the music, well, you said it yourself, it's incredible. It makes it seem almost like a music video, and I love watching a movie that tells a good, but somewhat abstract story to some awesome music (The Wall).

I personally think Trigun might be the best Anime they've aired overall, but FLCL really left an impact on me. To be honest, I disliked it when I first saw it, but after reading analyses and watching it again, everything just clicked. Heck, I even bought the light novels that the series' writer made, and they're great too and make a lot of sense of the story for those who couldn't follow the Anime... unfortunately, they're now out of print.

Before I just go on for hours and hours, let me just say it's nice to see another fan that appreciates the finer points (not trying to sound pretentious here) of the series and tried to give it that respect.

yup, definitely one of those animes you really have to focus on, or leave your brain at the front door :P
