Such a bad show.

Poor Ocean VA's. At least Scott got to reprise Lord Raptor in the OVA.

@8000 Saiyans I think one of the main problems is that the writers, as great as they were (you got people like Christy Marx on the staff) just didn't know what to do with the concept.

Plus, the animation's horrible (especially in the first few episodes). It got better later on, but it still was sub-par.

In fact, whenever I rewatch this show, I only do it for the acting. Sue Blu once again did a good job with the direction and the actors really seemed to have fun with their roles.

My personal favorite has always been Mike Donovan's Demitri. He was quite possibly the best handled character and Mike's performance reminds me a lot of Dick Gautier's Serpentor at times (just with an accent instead of a hiss).

And although Richard Newman was good as Pyron, the character is pretty much a ninny during the whole show.

Demitri aside, this show also gave us two hilarious performances from Scott McNeil: Lord Raptor and Anakaris.

Face it Scott McNeill is iconic in certain roles.

This is one of those shows where you can really tell that the people involved didn't care at all. The characters frequently went off model, the plots were dumb, the writing was dumb. I get the feeling that the staff wanted to work on something else, but had to get this show out of the way first. "Ah, they're kids. They're stupid enough to watch and they won't care."

Susan Blu and the VAs really did their damndest to make the show work, but it just wasn't enough, I'm afraid.

The voice acting is pretty decent, but the animation is basically bad. The worst part of this series is Harry Grimore, because he's not from the Darkstalkers video game. That's my opinion.

I dunno how I feel of this show, it's definetely my least favourite Capcom animation but it's kinda goofy in a so bad it's good way but still not to the same level of Street Fighter, Megaman, Mario or even Game N

@HienFan I honestly liked Captain N and Street Fighter, not as so-bad-it's-good shows, but I honestly think they're good. However, this Darkstalkers cartoon, now that's definetly a so-bad-it's-good show (the stories are enjoyable, the acting is excellent, but the animation is just AWFUL!!!!!!).

 10 Shout Outs!
Most western cartoons based on video games, as a whole, are pretty bad.

Most gaming cartoons are so bad, they loop around and actually become enjoyable, be it because there's an earnest effort behind the badness (see: Donkey Kong Country, the Mario cartoons), or because the sheer magnitude of insanity and awfulness makes the show incredible to watch (see: Mega Man, Street Fighter).

This is just a bad show. Limited and often grotesque animation, generic character designs that lack the stylistic touches of the original games, and lazy writing and storylines that don't capture the quirky atmosphere of the original series. The only decent character is Lord Raptor, who actually manages to be hilariously over-the-top (blowing up a dinosaur WITH THE POWER OF ROCK) and is voiced well by Scott McNeil. Everyone else though, is a pale, one-note imitation of their likably-quirky originals. Morrigan is self-centered, adventurous, and just seeks excitement for herself instead of pledging allegiance to anyone in particular. Here, she's a Baroness knock-off.

It's a show that fills no specific niche and does not intend to accomplish anything whatsoever. It's generic and forgettable, and that's probably the greatest offence art can commit.

 1 Shout Out!
Even though the animation is extremely crappy, the voice acting is quite impressive and the stories are quite enjoyable.

Thanks to this show, characters like Pyron, Demitri, Anakaris, Raptor and Victor became my favorite Darkstalker characters because of their hilarious moments and the excellent voice performances by their respective actors.

@Starscreamsfan I have to admit some of the voices(especially Hsien Ko and Felicia) sounds better here than in the recent games

And I love Rikuo and Jon's voices

@HienFan Yeah. But overall, Demitri is the best character in this cartoon IMO. He has the greatest voice, a lot of character development and his vocal performance is excellent.

I was quite hesitant to watch this at first, mainly because of the fact that I never saw it as a kid and from all the bad things I've heard about it (mostly concerning Morrigan), but I was pleasantly surprised with it. Yeah, the animation is completely abysmal, but everything else was neatly done.

Morrigan, even though changed a bit in terms of clothing, still looked like the sexy succubus from the game (unlike most people described her looking ugly). By ugly, I always think of the Queen from Disney's Snow White in her old crone form, but it was just the critics and game fans being completely exaggerated in their remarks.

@Starscreamsfan I'm pretty sure the fact that the studio was evidently bereft of cartoonist skill didn't help in that regard; I've seen an annotated version of the series and I can say up front that they couldn't draw or animate her face in a way that wasn't awkward or stiff to save their lives, and that's likely where much of the criticism comes from.
said at 12:22 PM on Wed Nov 5 2014
@CatsTuxedo Well, that's true, if we're talking about the first episode, in which Morrigan's face is quite inconsistent in design. But, if you watch later episodes, her face is a lot more consistent.

But then again, this point you raised about the animation being made by a studio with a lot of cartoonist skilled animators may be the reason why the animation is so awful. I mean, it's quite sad when almost everyone involved in this cartoon was really passionate about it, and the only guys that didn't care about the project are the animators (The writers created good stories, the voice performers really embraced their characters, no matter how whacky they are, but the animators just did the drawings and didn't bother to correct them).
said at 12:50 PM on Wed Nov 5 2014
@Starscreamsfan I don't think anyone on this project cared about cartoons aside from the actors, actually. If they did, they wouldn't even think of making the drawings look this bad, the story so incomprehensible or the attempts at comedy so negligible. The people behind this show were in it for the money and absolutely nothing else.
said at 4:26 AM on Fri Nov 7 2014
@CatsTuxedo I dunno man. Yeah, the animation is lazy. The stories are good in my opinion. I mean, the writers are quite good (and most of them wrote episodes in which the protagonist was their favorite character).

You got great writers like:

Richard Mueller (he wrote some of the best and most enjoyable episodes and was also the story editor for the show)

Christy Marx (she wrote two episodes featuring Donovan).

Doug Booth (apparently, he likes Anakaris)

Kat Likkel (her stories deal more with the long rivalry between Morrigan and Demitri)

Brooks Wachtel (apparently, he's a Lord Raptor fan)

Katherine Lawrence (she finds Rikuo extremely attractive, for a fishman)

Yes, they wanna win the bucks, but at least the writers made an effort to earn them by writing stories that stand on their own, even though they really don't feel like Darkstalkers stories, but then again, they feel like they could have worked if the show wasn't related to Darkstalkers.

The same goes for the voice actors, who embraced these roles no matter how whacky and ridiculous they were.

Michael Donovan as Demitri is quite possibly the best performance in the show (I really wish he could reprise the role someday) and the character is well developed.

Richard Newman, even though he's my favorite Canadian performer (how many times have I said that already???), doesn't really manage to surpass Donovan's Demitri. Sure, he still does a great job as Pyron, but the character is absolutely pathetic in the cartoon. But then again, I really enjoy this pathetic version of Pyron, because it's so well performed and because it's fun to see him being captured and intimidated by characters like Huitzil and Terramon.

I would like to mention others, but I already posted my favorite Darkstalkers cartoon perfomers here:

@CatsTuxedo I thought the humour and plot was so bad it was utterly hilarious

Except for Harry I hate that kid
said at 7:53 AM on Tue Nov 11 2014
@HienFan I think the comedy was quite hilarious, but I agree with you about the plot. Even though the stories were good (IMO), the plot is quite hard to follow because of all the things that are going on.

Harry is something of a mixed bag for me, because they got a good child actor (Kyle Labine) and he had some good moments, but a lot of his funny lines were somewhat off. His only funny line that made me laugh hard was "Morrigan, I need to go to the bathroom!!!". Other than that, I wasn't quite keen on Harry.

@Starscreamsfan Well I'll defend this Morrigan, Saffron>Erin, I rather have a thick accent than a voice that sounds like a raunchy adult film
said at 6:59 AM on Fri Feb 20 2015
@HienFan Well, actually, that's one of the things the cartoon did better than the anime, Morrigan is supposed to be Scottish.
said at 9:03 PM on Fri Feb 20 2015
@Starscreamsfan I like Kathleen Barr a lot though Erin not so much
said at 1:55 PM on Sat Feb 21 2015
@HienFan Barr is good, but the lack of accent bothered me. She isn't bad though.

Erin doesn't have an accent and she overexaggerated the character, making her the weakest.
said at 10:37 PM on Sat Feb 21 2015
@Starscreamsfan Well we agree on one thing, Erin is the weakest
said at 8:00 AM on Sun Feb 22 2015
@HienFan Yes well, I personally prefer both Saffron Henderson and Siobhan Flynn (mainly because they gave her the correct accent), with Kathleen Barr at a very close second (though she doesn't have her accent, her acting is spot-on) and Erin Fitzgerald at a very distant third.
said at 2:55 AM on Tue Mar 31 2015
@Starscreamsfan Weeell that explains why 4Kids Pokemon is so well loved...

That aside, I'm one for voice first, accent second if it can put an already nice voice a more flavourful take, Siobhan is very good I'll give her that
said at 12:47 PM on Tue Mar 31 2015
@HienFan Yes, I think that works.

Though it seems really odd that this cartoon (with all it's flaws and inaccuracies) got Demitri's character (which, IMO, was a lot more menacing than all the other villains together, including Pyron) and Morrigan's accent right (as I said, the games even tell us that her birthplace is Scotland).
said at 9:22 AM on Sat Jun 27 2015
@Starscreamsfan Rikuo wasn't too bad either, considering what the anime did to him(and Sasquash and whatever cast that died in the anime)
