(On voice acting) "I feel very fortunate because I love what I do for a living. Not everyone can say that about their job. Every session I go to, I get to become someone else. It's always a challenge. I'm always learning. I'm working with some of the most talented people on the planet. Some whose careers I've followed for years! I feel like I found a way to leave my humble mark on the world. Hey, it may not be Ghandi, but it's nice to know that some folks will enjoy this stuff for generations to come."

(Most challenging part of voice acting.) "Making the characters believable. I think that's the biggest challenge of any acting job. No matter how good the character looks or what kind of cool or quirky voice I develop for him (or her), if you guys don't buy the lines coming of the mouth, nothing else matters."

said at 2:06 PM on Wed Jan 22 2014
@DreamMaster08X I understand that his Starscream is held in relatively high regard. It's just that Wolverine and Spike are more iconic and representative of Steve's general character type. Besides, there are guys like Michael Dobson or Chris Latta that've embodied that character more wholly and less recognizably than Steve has.
DreamMaster08X (Moderator)
said at 2:21 PM on Wed Jan 22 2014
@CatsTuxedo But I'd at least think he'd have at least double those votes. I wouldn't expect the role to crack number 1, but I did expect... something more.

Plus, the likes (votes/comments) of the Starscream VC would greatly dispute the last sentence.
said at 2:38 PM on Wed Jan 22 2014
@CatsTuxedo I agree with your first point, but your second point is kind of subjective. For me, although Steve's voice for the character was a bit "recycled" at that point, I felt he gave the strongest and most complete performance he has ever given with that higher, slithery voice of his. The voice and performance balances the whiny, cowardly side of Starscream that he's known for while also being scary in his own way. I find it to be a perfectly good voice that's functional and versatile enough to fit many types of scenes.

Chris Latta is great too, but for me personally, his work on Cobra Commander is his stronger work, and the character I associate that voice with. I haven't seen enough of Michael Dobson's Starscream to comment in detail, but from what I've heard, his voice for the character sounds more forced, generic, and flat to me than anything else.

I honestly prefer some of his... less MANLY roles like Ghostfreak, Jamie and, to an extent, Starscream, because honestly they show off his range. That he's not just good at playing the "butch" type that he is apparently best known for. I wouldn't even know it was him!

I for one highly enjoy picking his voice out in a game. Possibly some of the most fun I actually had playing Hitman Absolution was that I got to hear Steve playing that security guy in the first mission and then that other soldier when you're escaping the motel. The game on the other hand was far too linear and cheap and I hope to play the old games sometime, but one of the highlights was just getting to hear Steve and say "High Steve! Hey there Steve Blum!" to the screen when I was next to his character! XD

Sure, it may get old hearing him do the same old thing so many times. Sometimes it's fun to pick him out in a game and other times it can get a little grating, but it IS the director's choice on what he does. I learned a lot when I read Christopher Ayres' quote where he said that people are far too quick to blame an actor when 99 times out of 100 it's the director's fault, because it is the truth, people! A lot of the time an actor is only as good as his director because the director has final say and control over everything.

Of course, this is one man, he doesn't have a limitless vocal range, but he does have a darn good one. If you think a guy with this amount of experience and who has impressed so many times sounds stale, or emotionless, or just didn't meet your expectations it was probably the result of lazy, uninspired casting, or a poor director.

I admit that a lot of his characters sound the same, and I'm not even a big fan of a lot of his characters to begin with. However, he's still a wonderful actor who just gets better and better, Amon being one of his greatest performances of all time. He can blow your mind, the directors just need to give him better direction and let him.

@TheVengeanceKnight I admire the man and his talent. I may not enjoy everything he does but I'm tired of talented hardworking actors who deserve respect being chewed out for something that's out of their control. He's a great guy and a terrific actor and I'm tired of seeing this kind of stuff being said about him. (Nothing personal towards LordofEvil96.) Steve even had someone talking crap to him on twitter basically saying how they hated his voice and that everything he did sounded like crap and he didn't deserve all the work he got! I saw it happen myself! Someone was enough of an jerk to insult him to him directly on twitter! Thankfully, the person apologized and made up with him... but my gosh it was still painful to read... Back on topic. *high 5*

@PsychicVoiceSpy I did the exact same thing when I learned that he voiced some of the Rebels from Star Wars Battlefront II: I played as the faction just to hear and pick out his voices, even though I seldom play as the Rebels.

"Sure, it may get old hearing him do the same old thing so many times. Sometimes it's fun to pick him out in a game and other times it can get a little grating..."

I completely understand this. However, I believe that, regardless of the statement, Blum has an undeniably commanding presence whenever he gets behind the mic. He always manages to keep your attention no matter what style of voice he does, and even if there are roles that you don't like by him, you still have to give props for his efforts. can't deny that he is one tour-de-force of a voice actor.

Steve Blum remains my 2nd favorite of all-time (behind Frank Welker BY AN INCH) because of this. Every time I hear his voice in a move, show, or game, no matter how big or small or good or bad the role, I've always been enthralled and instantly have a need to listen attentively to it. When a VA causes an action like that, they're obviously doing something right.

CatsTuxedo (Moderator)
said at 6:42 PM on Mon Jan 21 2013
@LordofEvil96 You can blame that on lazy and/or creatively sterile casting/voice directors. Blum has genuine vocal versatility, but whether it's actually taken advantage of is another story.
said at 4:49 AM on Tue Jan 22 2013
@LordofEvil96 The same could be said for any (and possibly every) voice actor; why are you singling out Blum in particular?
said at 1:02 PM on Tue Jan 22 2013
@TheVengeanceKnight Well every character he voices sounds the same. With other voice actors they choose different voices for different characters. But with Blum it feels like every character he voices has the same voice regardless of how many he provides voicework for.

@BlankSlate He's cast in tons of video games but lately he rarely has a chance to show his full acting talent. Of course, I've barely played any games recently, but in the shows I've seen where his character's actually had more emotional depth he was truly great, like Spike from Cowboy Bebop. He's been getting a lot more video game roles and less in things like quality anime and cartoons, thank you Nick for putting him in Korra at least!
said at 7:05 AM on Thu Mar 7 2013

@pokemastanumba1 Except there are plenty of differences in tone and personality for many of his characters. Just because you can tell it's the same guy doesn't make them identical. Many actors turn in lots of voices that sound similar but still work, KMR,(usually) John Dimaggio, Billy West, Nolan North, Dee Bradley Baker, etc. This does not make them bad.
said at 9:52 PM on Wed Jul 3 2013
@Nightmare Crusher That's very true. But, voice actors are only human, and are restricted by what the writers and directors tell them to do. Though, I just wish that Blum would try to come up with a more unique and original voice more often.

Anyway, my previous comment(s) may have been (at least) somewhat prickish, and I'm glad that they could be deleted.

@TheVengeanceKnight Recently watched TF Prime and his Starscream knocked me on my @$$ with how awesome it is. To quote Syndrome (The Incredibles): "OH MAN! I'm still geeking out about it!". Amon is amazing, I really loved his Ben 10 voices, and I still feel that Spike Spiegel is his best Anime performance overall... I guess for now it's Starscream. However, any of those that I mentioned could easily take the lead, it fluctuates. :P
