NEWS - Toonami Is Back
Reported by NCZ on Wed May 16 2012

On April Fools' Day 2012, Cartoon Network brought back their Toonami block (which was tragically cancelled in September 2008), showcasing classic anime series such as The Big O, Gundam Wing, and Dragon Ball Z  for just one night, a decision that was very well-received by fans. Shortly afterward, a Twitter campaign headed by voice actor Steve Blum (the voice of TOM, the narrator for the Toonami bumpers) called #BringBackToonami was launched. Each Friday, fans were encouraged to make tweets containing the hashtag in the hopes of making their thoughts known. Clearly, the fans have proven passionate enough that Adult Swim has announced on their website and Facebook page that the block will be triumphantly returning on May 26, 2012! Anime fans, rejoice!

I'm so happy to see Toonami back. Honestly, Cartoon Network was seriously starting to go downhill when they took that away. I remember that day too. I cried so many tears that day. *Bang...*

I'm happy it's "back" and I love all the shows on it but really all they did was take AdultSwims anime block and call it Toonami, it's not the same though v.v

As a long-running Toonami fan, this made me happy when I first heard it as an April Fools joke (honestly, could you believe the ratings?!)

I'll always be tuning in every Saturday night, just to be a true supporter. For me, Deadman Wonderland and Casshern Sins look like two anime shows that I can quickly get into... generally since they're my cup of tea. I'm sorry if I'm being a prick for saying for this, but I'm glad both Kekkaishi and Durarara are off the line-up.

Hey... once Toonami gets enough money, the likes of Panty & Stocking and even Fairy Tail could be added. DeMarco seems interested in those two titles from what I've heard! :)

Remember they don't have much money so the rights to purchase shows would be very budjet consuming. Watch this and they may get more money ( or however it is they get money )

How do you like the classic anime is dissapointing is a typo i meant to put How can you say classic anime is dissapointing

IAMTHEVASTUNIVERSE & Music Meister i love how you 2 trolls don't even give out a reason why you hate classic anime, both of you don't know WTF you're talking about, How do you like the classic anime is dissapointing? you never seen watched the old toonami but you both hating good anime means you both have taste.

Now I got through replying to those trolls, Now i would like to say this why isn't the block coming to the cartoon network side why on AS? it's not gonna do as good as the original toonami block Adult Swim is just gonna butcher it just to please the trolls instead of the true listeners that like Gundam Seed , Gundam Seed Destiny , Sailor Moon , .Dot Hack Sign , Rurouni Kenshin and all their other classic anime they use to air. so guys don't get excited it's not the same toonami we know.

@Lelouch4Ever You've misinterpreted what they're saying. They didn't say they hate classic anime. They're saying they hope the schedule can be a mix of old and new shows.

The upcoming shows on Toonami will be left a secret until the 26th.
said at 12:33 AM on Sat May 19 2012
I make the suggestion now: Toonami should dedicate a block of time for previously banned or unseen cartoon episodes. Not every night but once a year. Show episodes that were banned from the air for some reason, like the "Buffalo Girls" episode of Cow & Chicken, or the "Birds of Prey" episode of Batman: Brave & the Bold. Take advantage of that late-night rating.

@wright1996 Or that fabled super-secret episode of Dexter's Lab, "Dexter's Rude Removal". I've actually wondered whether or not it truly exists, so seeing it for myself would be the only way to know for sure. Plus it sounds hilarious, in a totally childhood-crushing way.

I'm interested in the original content that Adult Swim will be creating for the Toonami block also it will be interesting to which new anime they will make it on to the line up.I really have no interest in watching the older anime titles that will re-air when Toonami returns on the 26th.

As much as I like classic animes I hope it's not all on the lineup, that would be a little disapointing

That's awesome!!! Can't wait to start watching again! Thanks so much, both Steve Blum and fellow fans!

This is great news! Glad to see that our campaigning worked. Personally, I'm hoping that this means we finally get Gundam and Kenshin back.
said at 9:14 PM on Wed May 16 2012
Wow... Just... Wow... Who would ever guess that this would actually happen again? Though I do hope that this will be more than just Saturday nights because in order for Toonami to really thrive in needs to be on WAY more often.
said at 9:51 PM on Wed May 16 2012
@Pokejedservo Agreed. I pretty much stopped watching Toonami when it became exclusive to Saturdays. I also hope it's on earlier than Midnight, as opposed to just being a re-branding of [adult swim]'s anime lineup. Hopefully one of the two will be true! :D
said at 11:44 PM on Wed May 16 2012
@PurpleWarrior13 true but there is a lot we still don't know about what CN is really planning for Toonami's revival but the fact that Toonami is getting revived is a good reason to be optimistic.
said at 12:51 AM on Thu May 17 2012
@Pokejedservo That's true. :D

They gave us an update recently, and apparently it will be Saturday nights from 12-6am, and will have new original anime programming, as well as classic anime titles.

I hope the oldr shows come baxk on not just DBZ or other ones but shows like Thundercats and Ronin Warriors. I would also like it if they aired original Pokemon and Rurouni Kenshin. Maybe some DCAU shows and The Unicron Trilogy or maybe Beast Wars/Machines can be a part o it as well.

Just having the block back is good enough, but it would be awesome if they would include the following series:

-One Piece
-Dragon Ball Z
-Inuyasha: The Final Act
-Tenchi Muyo
-Sailor Moon
-Naruto Shippuden
-Fairy Tail
-Ranma 1/2

But again, I'm just happy that it's back at all, so I'll take what I can get!!!
said at 9:15 PM on Wed May 16 2012
@PurpleWarrior13 Oh! And Gintama! :D
said at 12:46 PM on Thu May 17 2012
@PurpleWarrior13 Heck yeah! That's what Iv wanted for a while, Naruto Shippuden back on a channel I have, especially having it back on Toonami!

@PurpleWarrior13 I totally like how you added Fairy Tail in those chooses. Its a totally awesome anime.. My favorite well besides Naruto..

Time to start guessing what "new" shows they'll pick up. They might keep a few "classic" stuff (original DBZ, Big O) but they would need some recent stuff to appeal to new viewers.

Chances are it'll be long-running shows to avoid too many reruns.

My guesses:

*Tiger and Bunny (short but it's new and everyone is saying it's almost guaranteed to have a TV deal so it's the possible exception)

*Dragon Ball Z Kai (almost certain unless it's exclusive to Nicktoons and Toonzai)

*Kenichi: The Mightiest Disciple (50 dubbed episodes of awesomeness!)

*Fairy Tail (48 episodes dubbed and still an ongoing series)

*One Piece (200+ episodes dubbed and still ongoing)

Oh and I guess Naruto: Shippuden is almost guaranteed too. Sure the dub has continued on through iTunes and DVDs but since Disney XD canceled it, some fans have had no other legal ways to view it.

I'd be very surprised if InuYasha: The Final Act wasn't added to the lineup too.

Wasn't the first series at one time one of the highest rated shows on the network?
said at 8:24 PM on Wed May 16 2012
@Jackson_H DBZ Kai's cable rights are exclusively owned by Viacom (who owns Nick), and it's network rights were owned by 4Kids (who control the Toonzai block), and look like they might be purchased by Saban Corp.

But your other suggestions are shoe-ins! :)
