Honestly compared to the two films that it's sandwiched between, Alpha: The Movie ended up striking me as awful. From an animation standpoint, it just feels a lot cheaper and the fight choreography is pretty disappointing; which is unfortunate because the character designs by themselves are great. Handled by Yoshihiko Umakoshi, who's got a *fabulous* style for the record. You might know him for Casshern Sins, Air Master, Mushishi, and of course My Hero Academia...

Whatever concepts this movie's plot did have (e.g. canon foreigner Shun being Ryu's "long lost bro"), let's say they worked better on paper than execution. Similar to SFII and Generations, the film only ever bothers having a select few characters heavily involved with the plot. Hey, you love Dan? Zangief? Guy? Sadly they don't contribute much to the narrative. But to be fair to the former, Hibiki had what was essentially the best scene in this entire flick. Oh, and to get it out of the way, Dr. Sadler's one of the flattest villains I've ever seen in an anime period.

For what it's worth, though, the soundtrack from what I could remember was decent and the voice acting in English/Japanese's rather great for the time period. There's also the aforementioned Umakoshi designs so long as they don't suffer from off-model.

So yeah... I didn't like Alpha even taking into consideration its extremely few pros because the cons outweigh them. Generations which came out in '05 may not have been on par with SFII, but I thought it was less taxing to sit through opposite Alpha. Feel free to disagree.

Not on the same level as the SFII movie, but I definitely remember liking this a good deal. It was nice hearing Skip Stellrecht and Lia Sargent again, and Steve Blum and Keith Burgess make for a really natural Ken and Akuma. I seem to remember the DVD had some bonus features that included interviews with the Japanese VAs, and I found those to be pretty fascinating. I think Kane Kosugi mentioned being a Street Fighter fan before he got the part of Ryu.

Unlike SFII which I've seen multiple times, I only saw this movie once several years ago. I'm kind of afraid to watch it again out of the concern that it won't be as good as I remembered.
