just finished watching this and holy **** what an awesome movie - it hit me on an emotional level with it's message about finding inspiration and being stuck in a rut which is what I find myself in on a daily basis

the cast was excellent, Kirsten sold it as Kiki to me

I actually didn't mind Phil Hartman as Jiji, he was funny

I was a bit wary of watching this because Debbie Reynolds was in it, and the wounds are still somewhat fresh from her and Carrie's deaths last December but I swallowed my fears and went for it and god damn it I'm glad I did - excellent job

Janeane Garofalo was also great as Ursula, as well as Matthew Lawrence as wacky Tombo - though tbh I did hear some elements of Bobby Hill in Pamela Adlon's performance as Ket

all in all, a fine, fine piece of work from Miyazaki and from Studio Ghibli - now to decide what to watch next

"Kiki's Delivery Service" was the movie that changed my perspective on Anime; back then I assumed it was just nothing but sex and violence, but this movie both made a convert and a fan of Miyazaki. The only major "conflict" in the movie is Kiki's inner growth into adulthood, and it's handled in a very realistic, honest way.

It also holds the distinction of being the first Ghibli movie Disney dubbed. The principal and minor roles are all well cast and acted, but the Disney dub's real highlight is Phil Hartman. Sure, his more smarmy, sarcastic Jiji may be a sticking point to fans of the Japanese version, but his turn is so infectiously funny that it's hard not to be won over.

Interestingly, there was also a previous version by Streamline. It's a bit more accurate than the Disney dub, but having said that, it's not better or worse, only different. As with "Totoro", either dub is perfectly fine. (By contrast, both "Castle in the Sky" and "Porco Rosso" are far more preferable, dub-wise, with their Disney dub counterparts as opposed to their more laughable, trainwreck quality predecessors Tokuma unfortunately supplied them with.)

This will be the last time I talk about the dub unless I have something good to say as I already said my word on the Laputa page, both dubs were hit and miss once again central protagonist were with what I usually thought for the Disney dub but there weren't any real super horrible work I think almost everyone were stellar enough for both dubs

 3 Shout Outs!
Wow, I didn't know Kiki's parents were voiced by Kath Soucie and Jeff Bennett in the Disney version until I read the voices list. (Those two voiced Dexter's parents on "Dexter's Laboratory")

@dreamer Yep, but Disney didn't get the rights to Studio Ghibli til 1997
There is a Japanese Laserdisc boxset in Japan with the original Streamline English dubbing

@MatthewC17 I haven't heard the Streamline one. I didn't know it came before the Disney one. How can you watch this version?
