 3 Shout Outs!
"Hercules" is proof that something like Greek myths can be adapted into a hilarious satirical musical.

 1 Shout Out!
This was the VERY first movie I saw in theaters! I was 3 when it came out, and it's a movie I have so many fond memories watching. It's so different and more unique than any other Disney movie, and it's a cool introduction to Greek mythology. It was also hilarious, had a cool female character, and it had great voice acting! Even the music was surprisingly decent.

Just how is Hercules underrated??? It has like 97% or something along those lines on the Rotten Tomatoes. A lot of people I talk to say it's like the best Disney film they've ever seen. Also, didn't critics praise it?

@Ross123 I can't speak for TheLemsterPju, but I have seen a few know-it-all, pretentious internet 'critics' (I'm not referring to anything I've read on here) bashing this movie and they honestly came off as if they were going out of their way to make the movie sound way worse than it is. Also, Hercules was a financial disappointment for Disney and one of their least successful movies of the 90's, so not as many kids saw it in theaters and grew up with it. Also, when it comes to the Disney renaissance, it seems to be less talked about than most of them.

I could probably say a bit more if I wanted to, but it would probably turn into a bit of a rant.

@PsychicVoiceSpy I didn't know about any of that but thanks for letting me know. Shame as it is a wonderful masterpiece in my mind & many others too.

@Ross123 I'm glad you seem to love the movie as much as I do. :)

 2 Shout Outs!
Definitely one of the better underrated Disney animated features.

@TheLemsterPju I couldn't agree with you more. I didn't really like what I saw of this movie as a kid, but after I watched it all the way through about a month ago, it's shot up there to being one of my all time favorite animated movies. It's one of the most visually inventive and spectacularly animated films Disney has ever produced in their history, the music is pretty much top notch throughout the entire thing, the characters manage to be really memorable, fairly complex and extremely likable throughout the movie, there are some darker, tragic elements (Meg's story in particular stands out) in the story without it weighing the film down or feeling out of place, and the action scenes are spectacular.

I love this movie, and it honestly saddens me that it's so overshadowed by most of the other Disney films and I feel a lot of critics and Disney fans in general don't give it the love it deserves.

@TheLemsterPju @PsychicVoiceSpy Personally, I don't think it's underrated at all. Why? I have yet to find at least half a dozen people who even dislike it a LITTLE bit. At least from an audience perspective. This is a movie I've seen get just the right amount of praise that it deserves.

For me, personally, I like this movie.... but in its general domain, I wouldn't say it's one of the BEST. As a kid, I didn't get as involved or engaged in Hercules as I did with other recent Disney films at the time, such as Mulan or Tarzan, and especially Hunchback (my personal favorite). At an older age, I like it a bit more than I did, but my general outlook of the film is pretty much the same.

What do I like about it? The animation. Gerald Scarfe, in my opinion, is THE one animator I WANT to see more of. Though he did very little work (this and my favorite movie "The Wall", as well as the music video for "Welcome To The Machine"), his designs, coloring, and drawn movements are just so one-of-a-kind and fluid that it adds an extra layer of depth to anything the movie has to offer. Another thing: the music. However odd the style of the movie for this type of era, it still generally works with the story. I will admit, the opening sequence is my absolute favorite part of the movie, mainly because of the music.

But to be honest, everything else is not much of a standout for me. I love the story (the start of it anyways), music, and animation, but the rest is rather sub-par in comparison. Most of the characters weren't really standout-ish for me. Hercules is an okay hero archetype and that's about it; Pegasus has a few good laughs, but that's about it; Meg to me was just a blank slate with a decent backstory I didn't even remember; Phil was forgettable to me, not really having much of an effective performance to me honestly, comedy or development wise. The two graces for me were Zeus and Hades. Now THESE were the standouts for me. Both performances were nailed with JUST the right amount of charismatic quality. The Fates were also a nice addition, too.

I also thought that the ending was just a bit too far out there for me. Even as a kid, by the time the climax always came in the movie, my attention would wander and then I'd lose track. It's not that the conflict wasn't effective: it's the way that all the elements are thrown in together to serve that conflict. I think it was a little too much to have to take in.

Other than that, I honestly think this is the best that Disney could do with the movie (apart from the characters). I like the result, and I enjoy it from time to time. But to me, at least, it's not really underrated. If anything, it's rated fine the way it is. Everyone I know really likes the movie, and so do I, despite flaws. It's an 8/10 [3 Stars out of 4] at best, for me.

@DreamMaster08X There are a few things I disagree with on what you said, but overall I still think you gave a very fair critique and score to it. And when I said it's underrated and under-loved and all that, I meant that when people are discussing Disney films altogether, a lot of them seem to not see anything very noteworthy about when I personally do. They think it's decent or good, but they don't seem to give it as much appreciation as they do with stuff like Mulan and Lion King and some of the others, when I genuinely believe this movie has many elements that are good enough to stand among those in terms of quality. Granted, there's not denying those two had much more impact that this, but still. I see how it didn't feel "Disney" enough to them and why they thought it might have been a little out there, but I still think it's essentially as good overall as the best the Disney renaissance had to offer.

I think why I like it so much is it's momentum, tone, and style rather than the characters and story on their own being notably better than other Disney films or anything like that. It's still a simple movie without a heaping amount of depth, but I think in some aspects the way it's executed makes it a more satisfying experience than a lot of Disney films, but explaining what I mean by this would take far too long to fit comfortably into this comment box.

Still, you give it a fair score and I respect your opinion.
