It's a story we've seen a million times, its characters are forgettable, its message is misanthropic garbage, and it completely banks on its spectacular special effects (which are the ONLY thing people seem to enjoy).
Think about it. By complimenting a misanthropic environmentalist film (like this one), you're saying "we want more movies like this". And, trust me, more people would rather NOT want to see more of this type of film.
Films like this were old decades ago...what makes this one so special?

I think it was the spectacle of the special effects, the help of the 3D ticket price and that it introduced us to such a believable fantasy world that people went back again and again to revisit this world. The story was solid but as you said, nothing new.

I think that "good" is still a bit too much for this movie. As I said, the story is weak. Granted, I do like the pseudo-science and the effects, but that's all. Nothing else in this movie truly grabbed me.
The GOOD news is that a friend of mine re-imagined the movie and it seems SO much more intriguing with a better message and a more interesting concept.
It should be here...

The story is essentially Pocahontas meets Aliens...
