I like the pre-movie Spongebob better.

Characterization: He was somewhat different in the first season, but he was constantly a great character during the first few seasons. Come season 6, he became annoying and rather creepy at times. It's not until season 9 that his old personality had returned.

Voice acting: It had always been Tom Kenny but he had pitched his voice several times during the years. These are my thoughts on his takes: Season 1 is when he had the deepest voice ever, especially in the first episode. Really good, since it reflects on the show's calmer atmosphere at the time. Seasons 2 and 3, Kenny changes it slightly higher pitch. This was my favorite voice he used for years, but current one beat it. I will get to that. His emotions are spot on. Movie and most of the first half of post-movie era (seasons 4-7?), his voice got high pitcher, which might not sit well to most people. It can be annoying at times depending on how SpongeBob acts. But as the era comes to a halt, Tom kenny decides to pitch back the lower and higher tone of voice, depending on what scene. Since season 9 and Sponge Out of Water, that had been his default voice. I personally enjoyed this voice the most due to Kenny balancing it from the old and new days.

It amazing how much his character got derailed from a lovable, naïve kid to to a delusinal, creepy, blind to reality, obnoxious and insane maniac who causes sorrow and destruction to everything he touches.

The new SpongeBob is with out a doubt one of the worst characters in animation history and needs to be killed as soon as possible.

More to say on this character; he's just infectious. Anyone who does his voice will NOT BE ABLE TO LIVE IT DOWN. He's so iconic, so marketable, so popular EVERYWHERE that this is one of those characters that fans will never be able to let his VAs, namely Tom Kenny and Santiago Ziesmer, his German voice, live down, and he sort of outshines their range. And it's not surprising. As obnoxious as the character is, the VAs are GOOD.

This character... he was so likeable before his flanderization into a jerk in later episodes, but pretty much regains his selfless, loveable nature in the movie.

@BlankSlate Actually, he was turned into a jerk starting with the fourth season, which came AFTER the movie.

@CatsTuxedo Still, the movie made him likeable again.

 1 Shout Out!
This is Santiago Ziesmer's best-known role. And it's one of his best!
Tom Kenny is well-liked for the role, too, and he's equally as good. I can't decide who's the best out of the two!
