only consulting detective was created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in 1887 and
quickly became one of the most celebrated characters in all of literature, much
to the author's surprise. Holmes' analytic rationality and his method of detailed observation
and deduction have set a new standard for the detective formula. The character
was partially based on one of Doyle's mentors, Dr. Joseph Bell, and his distinguished
ability to deduce facts about his patients' medical conditions and personal
lives simply by observing details. Besides his mental abilities, Holmes is also
a charming figure, a skilled fighter and swordplayer and master of disguises.
