Final - Theme: Final Fantasy

Even though I lost in the very first round, I feel that I improved greatly. Just messaging to say I finished my call with Kyle! It was a BLAST! I was a bit nervous throughout the whole thing, but overall it was wonderful! It took me awhile but I finally submitted my BTS thing >_>b I had a really hard time picking which of the challenges to record but ended up with the monologue.

Both really good, but Momoki got my Vote. I am a stand up comedian who does sketch comedy (All Voices). Just came off a show with Sinbad and perform with Jeff Garcia (Voice of Sheen on Jimmy Newtron) on the regular. My hats off to both of these people. Good Stuff! Mom0ki, I can't tell you how proud I am of you. It's been amazing to see you come so far. You are incredibly talented and deserve this recognition. I guarantee if you keep at it and keep your passion you will make it into the industry. Its a lot of hard work but you have the talent and the focus needed. My vote no doubt goes to you Mom0ki. And no matter what happens, I can promise that when I think of Act Your Voice Out Season 2, you'll be the first to pop up in my head. You're a true winner. Congrats :)

I've really enjoyed this season! Everyone involved brought some really top-notch performances, and this final round is no exception. In the end, though, my vote goes to MOM0KI. I just really enjoyed her performances in this round and in the season overall. TUXEDOTAARGUS was superb throughout the season, but I felt his Locke was a little awkward to listen to. Good luck to you both!

Wow, this was the hardest decision yet. Both of you showed so much depth, so much range to the characters. In the end, my final vote deserves to go to MOM0KI. Good luck to the winner.

Before I cast my vote, I've gotta give credit to both Tux and Momoki for giving such solid and breathtaking performances! (I have been following this from the beginning just so you know.)

If your reading this, I want you to know that you two both deserve to be in the final and I can't wait to see the results: but for now here is my review:

Challenge 1: Both your interpretations I thought were well delivered and were interesting takes on non-interpreted characters until you brought them to life. It was difficult, but I give the slight edge to MoMoki despite the voice being a little too soft, her voice had that emotion and charm to it that really fits Rinoa well.

Challenge 2: Again, excellent takes on the respective roles: but once again I gotta give it to MoMoki, she fit the characters perfectly both voice-wise and acting-wise! Her voice is what I think of when I listen to Rikku and Paine. I felt Tuxedo's take was a little bit rushed and a little too swift, but regardless it was a good take on Kain and Cecil.

Challenge 3: Oh my word, both of you were at the peak of your performances, I find it impossible to pick as you were both in sync and the acting was some of the best I've seen in the competition! True emotion was displayed here from both sides, but I give it to Tux for this challenge because I felt Momoki was a little soft for this role which is not what I think of Tifa personally.

Overall, even though MoMoki won the majority of the challenges I am still not sure who to pick, you two were incredible and to be fair you both deserve to win it: best of luck from me! :)

It's so hard to choose it almost hurts. Both finalists were so amazing with everything! I wish it were somehow possible for this to end in a tie.

Damn, this is tough! Both did a phenomenal job! I feel that this was their strongest round yet! The third challenge was astounding to listen to, considering that they were recorded separately. I'm still gonna need time to think on who to vote for! X(

Both Tux and Momo did REALLY well all round, but I really enjoyed Momoki's challenge #2.

Sorry for the double post but I was thinking... could we in the future see some improv singing in one these challenges? I think it would be interesting since normally a lot of people don't sing.

Challange #3 was pretty awesome to hear. Nice job! congrats to both finalists.

Definitely voted for Tuxedo! I've felt his submissions have been the best throughout the whole competition. He has a very wide range of emotions as well as voices. Really spectacular! The comments don't seem to like his Challenge 2, but I think that was one of my favs. I liked his different voices and I felt the fit the characters...from the little I know of them anyway :)

Momo is good but for some reason I really didn't feel it this time. The lines just felt really forced to me and didn't feel believable, personally. The lines just didn't really...reach out to me and hold my attention. It just seemed obvious you were acting, if that makes sense.

However, congrats to you both for making it this far! You've done what no one else could do this season. Props to you both! :)

I voted for Tux!
Momoki´s takes were too soft spoken for my liking in challenge 1 and 3 and I didn't believe the emotion in challenge 1, great work on challenge 2 though.

Awesome job, you two! You both deserved to make it this far, and you didn't make it easy to choose just one.

Basic thoughts for now:
Tuxedo - Loved your take on Cloud! That was definitely my favourite of the three. I also liked your take on Locke. Cecil and Kain were probably the weakest, though. Still good interpretations, but not quite as strong as the other two. (Of course, it was also hard for me to judge Kain without comparing your work to Liam O'Brien.)

Momoki: Rikku and Paine were my favourites. They really sounded like two different people talking to each other. After that, I'd say your next best was Tifa, then Rinoa.

Now, hopefully the third challenge wasn't too awkward (especially with the implications of "words aren't the only thing that tell people what you're thinking"). Though it's a great scene and it resulted in some excellent acting performances, so it all worked out. I'm REALLY going to have to think about who gets my vote. This will not be easy!

Well I didnt get to vote before this because I forgot to do so ha ha ha. Anyway, for me both performance in Challenge 1 was awkward.
Challenge 2 was better and a tie. Challenge 3 , I feel Tux is a tiny bit better with his character.

I have to agree with TaZZerath. Overall my vote went for TuxedoTaargus, because I think he took Challenges 1 and 3 (mostly Challenge 1, since 3 was a lot closer), but if we'd just judged Challenge 2 then my vote would have gone to MOM0KI. Kain was too monotone (Tux's worst voice from this round, easily) while Rikku was possibly MOM's strongest.

But still, great work to both of you! Brilliant stuff overall.

Really nice performances this round guys! However, I thought MOM0KI brought it to the table in this round. But TuxedoTaagus, you were pretty damn close.

MOMO, I loved, loved, loved your performance in Challenge #2 with your Rikku and Paine lines! There was a defiant difference in both of the voices and acting was on par.

Anyways, great job you two. And good luck!

First of all, congratulations to the both of you for making it to the final :)
In Challenge 1, I think Tux took this out convincingly. M0M0KI, I could hear the sadness in your voice, but it was still a very flat sadness, needed a bit more inflection I think.
In Challenge 2, it was a LOT closer. Both of you did some great voice variation between the characters and also managed to put a lot of emotion into it. This was tough. I actually think M0M0KOI was slightly ahead.
In the final challenge, again Tux was more convincing, so consequently he got my vote, Like Challenge 1 M0M0KI, your voice just sounded very flat. Perhaps it's only when you're performing softer, slower lines that this happens? Regardless I'm sure once you work on this you'll be a well-rounded VA :)

Well done guys, I bet there'll be a whole lot of relief when this is done!

First, as a disclaimer, both TuxedoTaargus and MOM0KI have done really strong performances this round. As someone who isn’t a voice actor and is just enjoying the performances, everything is my opinion and is relevant to my interpretation of that scene from the respective game. Of course, recognition and props to the admins and members of the community that made this all possible. Also, forgive the rant… I really love Final Fantasy.

TuxedoTaargus

First, let me say that these were some pretty tall orders with the choice of characters and scenes. Overall, I really enjoyed your voice with regards to the selection of pitch, general tones (given your choice of interpretation), and pacing. Words are clear as a bell and the strong streak of performances is not let down in this final round whatsoever. I get the feeling you may have not been as familiar as you could have been though on these characters, with a lot of the context being overlooked in the scenes. However, I think that some leniency is required since every scene for the male is a lead up scene, can’t help but think you could’ve done a lot more given some more time and information. So getting down to it:

Locke:
What a tough scene. Right before Rachel’s goodbye, your interpretation of the scene was a little bit different as I thought the conveyed emotional path was from shock (being startled by the party), awe (‘obtaining the magicite’), growing concern (as he examines it and discovers more cracks and damage on the magicite), despair (at the prospect of the stone not being effective or working at all for Rachel), and that little streak of hope mixed in all the way through (made a bit more apparent in the original text and more obvious if looked as the conjunction scene).

I though the beginning exclamation was not the right tone to convey his notice of the party’s arrival on the scene, but was still decent as an opener. The switch of pacing I thought was perfect here when you slow down to explain to the party what you are holding. When you reach the part where you notice the cracks, I would’ve like to see a realization that the magicite’s covered in cracks and the following implications (whether that be a couple pauses, an exaggerated slow down, etc). The doubt was decent (maybe a bit light) but the flip from doubt to despair was a bit sudden for me and threw me, especially at the point where you say Rachel. While I think the pacing was right, I can’t help but think you had some better tone and style that you could have used here.

While I think it really dropped the ball in conveying the most important point of hope that kept most gamers on the edge of their seat as they went to Kohlingen (where Rachel is), as a standalone this holds up alright.

Kain/Cecil:
I have to mention this, I really do not think it was fair to provide this script to Tuxedo because the original script (since this looks like the old one based on the Japanese release) relies strongly on context to make these lines work. Anyways, the dynamic between these two is incredibly important due to the high intensity of this scene. Cecil’s confrontation of Kain and the general willingness to oppose this course of action, mixed with desperation and his high moral ground puts him through an emotional path going from confrontational with a strong plea (stopping Kain while saying ‘she’s just a girl’), resolution (his oath-y-ness… yes, I make up words), comforted (saying ‘you are’ after realizing this isn’t going to be a fight), and ending in sincere thanks.

Kain’s bit here is actually really weird. His emotional path starts from highly confrontational to test Cecil, comforted (when Cecil confirms his stance and Kain’s sure of Cecil’s position), disdain and light sadness (for what the king has done), contemplative (his light planning), and that ending sting of Rosa’s reference.

First, I love the selection of voice for Kain, it was great. Cecil’s very quick and lighter voice did not really work for me as much and conflicted with his character too much for me, but I can see it still working for others. The lead off exchange up to the “slaughter in the king’s name” was lacking heavily in confrontation for me. With the constant back and forth these two have and their history as childhood friends, this diffused a lot of that tension that really weighs on this scene for me. I chuckled at the transition when Kain says “I knew…” with this light hearted interpretation adding this new side of Kain that added a little more depth to the character than what is typically observed. From there on out, the performance seemed a little rushed, not by way of pacing but by level of attention almost. Kain’s important reference to his pride and status as a Dragoon seemed light, Rosa’s mention seemed to be almost tacked on, and Cecil’s lines really didn’t add much for me here.

This challenge was where I hoped you would shine the most, but it came off kind of lackluster. With your great range, the voice dynamic was great but I feel that the acting and general level of performance dropped a bit here. I actually would love it if this could be redone and I could hear it again. Still, as a gentle reminder since passionate people kick themselves too often, this was a solid job (I just nitpick).

MOM0KI:
With the other half of Squaresoft’s history (aka Post-FF7) being selected for characters, I felt that these characters ran a slightly higher risk of more ‘set in stone’ interpretations. Unfortunately for me personally (since I love these interpretations), both Tifa and Rinoa interpretations differed so a new perspective was interesting to look at. Similar to TuxedoTaargus, your words are clear and this round does not fail to deliver. While I’m not sure if there is a solid understanding of what’s going on here either , still was a good listen.

Rinoa:
The lowering of Rinoa’s barriers and a glimpse into all her fears towards the end, this scene is often overlooked but a memorable moment between the couple nonetheless. While the character interpretation seemed different from mine, the performance and scene interpretation made perfect sense to me with Rinoa. Starting from fear (uncertainty of Edea’s influence and such), guilt (her breaking Adel’s seal), worry (concern for future actions), fear again that blends in from worry (possibility Ultimecia will control her again), and ending in resignation (her momentary acceptance of death from Squall).

In the context of a longer conversation this would not have bothered me at all, but that sudden “Edea’s still” threw me for a loop. After that (and also having been prepared myself after the 30th listen), the smaller focus on more of this despair heavy set of lines was delivered very well in the pacing department. Dragging on moments of uncertainty, the slight speed up at “what might happen…”, and the slower delivery overall worked for me. Tone-wise, I think there could have been a little more variety, but played it safe and came out with a solid showing for it.

While it didn’t push the envelope as far as it could have been, this was a good performance that got across what was needed. Would probably fit better in context though compared to stand alone, but still is good on its own.

Rikku/Paine:
If you have played FFX-2, this whole bit pretty much sums up the relationship between Rikku and Paine. Unlike the other scenes, this exchange, being more of a ‘run of the mill’ moment, places more emphasis on the characters themselves over the scene’s specifics. That said, Rikku’s movement appears to me as: surprise, insistence (more like badgering), caring, and playful disappointment.

Paine’s path is also straightforward: annoyance, frustration, and followed by annoyance in a manner where she’s just flatly trying to ignore Rikku and back her off (after all, she can be a Paine… get it? Yeah, I’ll stop).

The voices here were perfect to me. While you don’t have a naturally low voice, you contrast Rikku and Paine clearly and that adds to the dynamic of the light hearted, energetic Rikku to the more calm and stoic Paine. Each line’s pacing worked just right, emotions per line matched up, and the overall delivery of the scene conveyed the brighter style of this game and its characters.

This was my favorite performance this round from MOM0KI and in the round in general. There really is very little that I can find to criticize here besides maybe choosing a voice that sits a little more comfortably for Paine? Either way, this comes across to me as the best clip I’ve heard so far from MOM0KI.

Cloud & Tifa:
Arguably the most romantic and also the iconic scene before the journey to the final confrontation to the Northern Crater begins, this exchange was interpreted by both TuxedoTaargus and MOM0KI so differently from my interpretation (circle interpretation for those that lurk on FF7 boards) that I think I’ll comment on this as a standalone.

TuxedoTaargus, I actually liked your voice selection for Cloud (perhaps more than the other voice actors for Cloud :D). With this comforting, partially sad, and almost distant at times interpretation, this whole bit was a solid delivery and, interpretation set aside, was possibly the strongest performance from you. The range was good from the uncertain feeling at the start to the resolution at “do what we can”.

MOM0KI, your voice for Tifa didn’t snap to what I normally think of as Tifa. Given the interpretation that you two seem to have set though, I think it does the job just fine. That slightly sad, almost longing tone in your voice, which doesn’t stray too much, fits and the little bits of hope scattered throughout the lines fits too. The suggestive part I thought was actually moreover sweet than funny, but was a nice little take. I still think the range could’ve been a bit more diverse and pacing could have been changed a bit. Still, good job on this interpretation.

Ending thoughts:
I am a bit bummed out that this will be the last round of the contest (judges, encore round with everyone? :D), but it really is awesome to see this level of passion and talent just being brought center stage for people to see. In this final round, I thought both finalists had a strong showing but ultimately the edge went to MOM0KI with challenge #2 really getting that critical edge. No matter what way votes go, it was fun to follow both of you, the other contestants, and I hope to hear more. Cheerio.

Tux, you have my vote, I hope you come home with the gold!

I have been following this contest the whole way through, and I'm glad to see that both of you made it this far! No matter how things turn out, you two should feel proud of taking on all these challenges with such breath-taking results! Just because in of you will lose doesn't mean you aren't an amazing voice actor/actress, you should keep working for that goal no matter what. As for the winner, my vote goes to Momoki. I think what convinced me was her performance in Challenge #2, I loved the variety, if I didn't know any better I wouldn't be able to believe that the two characters were voiced by the same person!

TuxedoTaargus, as far as I'm concerned, you are the winner here, regardless of how the votes play out.

You gotten my vote for 4 out the 5 rounds. You have excellent range and variety in your performances, but most importantly you never sound like you're acting. You're becoming the characters behind the microphone, and you've done that throughout the entire competition.

Such a hard choice, but I'm going with Tuxedo only because I liked his Locke better.

I'm going to have to go with Taargus on this one. I just felt there was a lot more weight to your words, and that's very important in order to make these characters interesting, especially Cloud.

I confess in that I know little about the stress of voice acting, but I do know about working on it.

Tuxedo did a cool job voicing Cloud in the together challenge. For two people who didn't hear each other, I was almost stunned. The big points, however, I must defer to Momoki.

I'm not being biased or anything. Momoki did a stunning performance on her parts and swapping tones between two different personalities may sound easy, but good luck putting it into practice. Momoki? WOW! You pulled it off.

Your Rinoa part, I admit, may have needed some working on, in my opinion. Still, it captured the general idea of what the character would feel like. A bit soft in the voice but it's overlooked in that you had the tones down to expert level.

Wow, Momoki, you did an excellent job. I'd have to say the same for Tuxedo, as well. The romance scene that you two did together made me believe it was actually happening! I was able to imagine it in my head! That was my personal favourite.

However, I do have to pick one... I love both of your performances, but I'm going to have to go with Momoki on this one because she's done so lovely!

Congratulations on a GREAT SEASON everybody! Sad to see it come to a close but happy to crown a new champion. This is how I see the final round breaking down...

Challenge 1: I have to give to Tuxedo here by a wide margin
Challenge 2: I have to give to Tuxedo by a very slim margin on this one
Challenge 3: I have to give this one to Tuxedo as well

Please don't take offense to this Momoki because you have done an amazing job all season and I know you have quite the fan/friend following but looking at the whole season overall I would have to say that in my humble opinion TuxedoTaargus has been slightly above the competition consistently.

My vote for Season 2 Champion goes to TuxedoTaargus!

Rinoa's monologue was very moving, and Rikku and Paine sounded on par with the game, if not better.
Locke is just how I'd imagine him.

Man, this was a crazy competition, I can't believe it's almost over, both of the contestants are amazing, it's hard to decide! @_@

I cannot even begin to say how much I have anticipated these submissions. Some interesting/different interpretations (judging from the first listen through). With iconic characters like Cloud and Tifa to the unforgettable stories of Locke and Rinoa, this round is just packed with all sorts of amazing potential. Looking forward to the BTSer (not sure if that's right) submissions too!

If we wanted to submit two challenges for BTS, could we or are we limited to one challenge.

For all the BTSers - there are so many options this round. What are people submitting? Monologue? Dialogue with self? Just curious as I have no idea which challenge to tackle for fun.
