Round 3 - Theme: Transformers

Share/Save/Bookmark

All members of BTVA are welcome to submit a performance for voice acting practice or just for fun! See below for details.

THE RESULTS ARE IN!
Congratulations to our Top 8 Finalists! Not only have you made to the half-way point of the contest, you've also just earned yourselves a copy of Yuri Lowenthal and Tara Platt's Voice Over Voice Actor book AND The Warm-Up CD, kindly donated by Yuri and Tara themselves. Oh, and they've signed each copy as well!

So, back to business. What theme have we brought to you this time? Well, it's something a little more than meets the eye ;) (Yes, cheesy but appropriate :D) We bring to you characters from the Transformers universe. Robots in disguise. In disguise from familiar things like cars and planes to exotic things like animals.

If you're familiar with Round 3 from Season 1, you'll know that in this round, your task will be to voice 2 characters. Last season it was 2 heroes. But this time you'll be becoming both a hero AND a villain. So not only do your performances have to stand out to show how different your hero/villain characters are, but you'll also have to create 2 distinct voices, one for each character.

And don't forget, both Yuri Lowenthal and Tara Platt will be Special Guest Judges for this round.

Finalists ... voices ready, and roll out!

1 Finalist will be selected by our Special Guest Judges to move onto Round 4.
1 Finalist with the most votes will move on.
2 Finalists from the remaining group will be selected by the Judges' to move on.
4 Finalists will be eliminated.

Click on a character image to display their description and lines that you will voice act and record.
Wheeljack

(Wheeljack and Autobot medic/inventor Ratchet are flying in Wheeljack's ship to find an important relic)
Monologue 1:
"Boss thought you needed backup huh? I'll be sure to be on my best behavior Doc. (Ratchet tells him not to call him 'Doc') Whatever you say sunshine. So, all of team Prime's busy chasing down these four Iacon relics? (Ratchet says there are more) There's more? No worries Doc, I got your back. (Ratchet says he proved himself in battle during the war) Then I'm lucky to have you along champ. Coz we got a bogey on our tail. Soundwave huh? Megatron's communications chief? (Wheeljack increases the ship's speed) You wanna grab onto something. (a small Decepticon is released to divert Wheeljack's attnetion) Soundwave sent out Laserbeak? I welcome a good distraction. (Wheeljack gets behind Laserbeak) The hunter becomes the hunted. (Wheeljack fires weapons) Choke on that, Con."

(Wheeljack tells the story of how why he's hunting a Decepticon named Dreadwing)
Monologue 2: (Choice)
"I was searching for Autobot survivors and found a fellow Wrecker, Seaspray, who was blown to bits. My flyer, the Jackhammer picked up Seaspray's signal a couple light years from Madern. We made contact, and arranged a rendevous in the Drommadon system. But Dreadwing must've intercepted the transmission. Coz he got to Seaspray first. Proximity bomb. Supposed to take us both out. Suppose I should be glad the Jackhammer can take a punch. I picked up Dreadwing's ion trail, and tracked it through a dozen solar systems before catchin' up with him."

(Wheeljack is on the hunt for Dreadwing, who has killed a former teammate and just landed on Earth)
Monologue 3: (Choice)
"Hope he's enjoying the visit. It's gonna be his last. (The Autobot leader, Optimus Prime suggests to hold back for now since they don't know where Dreadwing is) Are you suggesting we sit back and do nothing? (A human government official tells Optimus to pull rank on Wheeljack) A tighter leash? Let me clarify, tiny. I'm not one of Optimus Prime's people. (Wheeljack leaves and his friend Bulkhead follows, trying to convince him to listen to Optimus) Let me tell you Bulk. Roadbuster, Pyro, Impacter, Rotorstorm, Seaspray. All dust. Guys like Optimus, they talk a good game. But when you're in the scrap, they don't wanna get their hands dirty. (Bulkhead tries some more convincing) I know, I know. Because Prime is the real thing. Blah blah blah. (Wheeljack receives an invitation from Dreadwing) I'll see you there Con. Just to see you fry. (Bulkhead says it's a trap) I know it's a trap, but when has that ever stopped me. (Bulkhead suggests they call for backup) You know Wreckers don't call for backup. They call for CLEAN UP!"

Wheeljack is a former member of the Wreckers, a combat unit that operated outside the normal chain of Autobot (faction of robot alien race who fights for peace and freedom) command. They took on dangerous missions no one else would. Trained specifically for battle and combat, Wheeljack is one of the roughest Autobots around and has an attitude to match. When we first meet Wheeljack, he's clearly a rebel, focused mainly on doing as he sees fit and has little respect for Autobot leader Optimus Prime. After some time he gain respect for Optimus and becomes a team player.
Cyclonus

(Attempts to give a motivational speech to his fellow Decepticons)
Monologue 1:
"Once the Decepticons nearly held the quadrant through terror. Now we scrap like slargs over a few energon cubes. Is this how you honour the memory of Galvatron? Is this the fate of the mighty Decepticon Empire? Give Decepticons, give until it hurts. We have nothing to fear, Unicron is dead, all that's left is his head. We have nothing to lose. Warriors such as you and I should meet their end in battle."

(Cyclonus and Scourge are discussing their alliance with Shockwave. They have come from 20 years in the future, where they kill Shockwave and take over as Decepticon leaders)
Monologue 2: (Choice)
"C'mon Scourge -- we owe him nothing! (Scourge observes they can't become future Decepticon leaders without Shockwave) Perhaps, but to think we must now serve Shockwave, the being that in the year 2008, we will kill to become joint commanders of the Decepticons! (Shockwave comes in with instructions for Cyclonus and Scourge) We answer to no one! Listen, you pompous, overbearing fool -- we don't have to take this from you! I mean, why should we serve someone we're going to kill and succeed in twenty years? (Shockwave, realizing what they've just said, sics a crazed Megatron on them) Scourge, it's Megatron! What--what's he doing here? (the two are separated during the ensuing brawl) H-help me, Scourge! I'm injured... Guh... Scourge, help me! Where are you!?"

(Cyclonus and Scourge have arranged to meet Galvatron in the middle of a human city. The two have arrived and are now waiting for him)
Monologue 3: (Choice)
"You sure this is the place, Scourge? (Scourge confirms it's the place) Why in the middle of a human settlement? Unless... unless he wanted to make sure we came alone. Face it, in the middle of this lot, you couldn't miss another Transformer! (Galvatron appears and calls Scourge and Cyclonus out for not following his orders exactly) As it happens. We don't wish to serve you. And they're Nebulans, not humans! We're Targetmasters now, Galvatron -- the Nebulans ARE our weapons! Now -- hand over the device!"

Cyclonus was rebuilt from a deactivated Decepticon (robotic aliens bent on power and conquest) chassis by Unicron in order to do Galvatron's bidding. As Galvatron's second-in-command, Cyclonus is fiercely loyal and always serious about his job. He focuses on nothing other than conquest.
Arcee

(Arcee goes along with her teenage human friend Jack on what's supposed to be a safe mission, until they discover a crashed alien spaceship)
Monologue 1:
"That's odd. Ratchet's satellite scans were accurate, but subterranean energon deposits don't cause this kind of surge. (They go to investigate) A crash landing. Stay behind me. Low and close. Wait here. (Jack follows anyway) I know who this ship belongs to. (Attempts to call base) Arcee to base, I need a ground bridge asap. Base, do you read? Scrap (like a cuss word). Comm links dead. This ship's gotta be transmitting a high frequency scrambler pulse. (Arcee drives Jack far away) Wait here. I mean it this time. (Jack responds with "I thought I was your partner") No Jack, you're a kid. You're only here because this was supposed to be no risk. Got it?!"

(Arcee visits the grave of her former partner Cliffjumper, who was killed by a Decepticon)
Monologue 2: (Choice)
"Hey partner, heck of a view you got up here. If there's even a small chance your spark is out there listening, well, we could really use you Cliff. Seems like everyday a new Decepticon arrives on the scene. We're outnumbered and outgunned. Yeah, I know what you'd say, "Sounds like a fair fight", and if that's the world we live in, so be it. I just want you to know, I haven't given up. I'm going to find the Con who took you from us."

(Arcee talks to an enemy prisoner Starscream about who killed her partner Cliffjumper)
Monologue 3: (Choice)
"Airachnid terminated my partner. (Starscream thinks that fellow Decepticon Airachnid was taking credit for killing this "partner" and claims the credit for himself) What? You weren't there. Who were you talking about? I'm talking about Tailgate. (She suddenly realizes that Starscream killed Cliffjumper) You were the one. You extinguished Cliffjumper. (In anger, Arcee prepares to avenge her partner in battle) Here's the key to your cuffs. Cliff would've given you a fighting chance. (Starscream pretends to cower) Take it! You're pathetic. (Starscream tricks Arcee and deals a near lethal blow) Aaaaahh! (Starscream starts monologuing and Arcee while weak, gathers what little strength she has left for a final attack) *quietly* Just keep talking Starscream. *getting louder* This ... is ... for ... Cliffjumper!"

Arcee is part of a faction of a robotic alien race called the Autobots, who fight for freedom against the evil Decepticons. Despite being the smallest member of the team, she is considered the most reliable soldier by her leader Optimus Prime. Her force of personality and tough as nails attitude fit perfectly with her skills in melee combat. But these traits hide a vulnerable side of Arcee. She has lost two partners, who were killed by the Decepticons and those losses shook her to her very core. While she is extremely loyal to her leader, Arcee will sometimes bend the rules and often lets her feelings of revenge get the better of her. When she was initially assigned as guardian of the human teenager Jack, she was less than thrilled, but over time she has grown close to him and is not only his friend but often acts as a mother-figure. The loss of her partners makes her very overprotective of Jack.
Blackarachnia

(Tracks down a fellow Predacon named Tarantulas to find out what he has been up to)
Monologue 1:
"What ever are you up to? How very interesting. So, this is where you've been hiding. Cozy. In a hideous sort of way. (Tarantulas prepares to attack) Cool your gears, tall, dark and gruesome. I didn't spend all this time trying to find your lair just to shoot it out with you. We need to talk. (Tarantulas makes up a fake excuse why he's scheming behind the Predacon leader's back) I'd say you were engaged in stealing a status pod, and perhaps reprogramming the helpless Maximal protoform inside into a new Predacon, loyal to you of course."

(Both factions have discovered a flying island which possesses a powerful light emitting weapon that can cause major destruction. Blackarachnia schemes her way into gaining control of it all for herself)
Monologue 2: (Choice)
"Success. This flying island, and all it's power will soon be mine to control. Hahahahaha. It's mine. This island's weapons will give me the power to defeat even Megatron (leader of Predacons). I will destroy the Maximals and rule the Predacons. Now, for power! This must be the control center, but how do I ... (a beam of light surrounds her and she screams in pain) Aaaaaaah!!! (pain subsides) Yes. Yeees. I feel the power. I have the control. Let there be ... light (the light weapon fires attacking the nearby Transformers)"

(Arrives on scene to find the Maximal Silverbolt (who is a half wolf half eagle Transformer) protecting an important machine called a protoform. In the past Silverbolt has been known to be a gentleman and never attack Blackarachnia because she is female. Even though they are enemies, over time she has slowly grown to be fond of him)
Monologue 3: (Choice)
"The Predacons claim that protoform! (Silverbolt tells her it has malfunctioned) Pardon me if I don't buy that load bird dog. (She attacks) Come on! Fight back! How long will you carry this silly chivalry? Coz this dark damsel is not impressed! (Their fight takes them to a dark and unknown environment) I consider myself a creature of darkness, but this place is making even my skin crawl. (She falls down a chasm) Aaaaah. (Silverbolt flies in and saves her) Not too shabby Bowser (her nickname for him). But don't expect any gushing gratitude."

Blackarachnia is a member of the Predacons (evil faction of a robotic alien race). She's a sultry femme fatale, highly intelligent and extremely dangerous, esp given her non-robot mode is a black widow. Blackarachnia always looks out for number one, and while she values her independence and freedom above anything else, she also craves power. If she follows orders or befriends a fellow Predacon, it's only to seem loyal or to advance her own devious plans. Normally deadly in battle, she has gained one weakness. The heroic member of the Maximals, Silverbolt makes her a little uneasy. His "gentleman" demeanor and kindness (despite their factions being enemies) during each of their encounters has slowly grown on her.
Voting has ended.

I have to admit it kind of threw me off that you didn't add any pauses in between the natural break in the lines, it made it sound rushed a bit. Love your deep tones though man!

Agrees (6)  Disagrees (6)
NCZ

The deep voice fit Wheeljack pretty well. For Cyclonus, the voice was a bit too high/raspy for me, but the acting was great. Not a bad job, all around.

Your Wheeljack was solid but I just thought it was a tiny bit too young/youthful sounding for a wrecker. I felt your Cyclonus missed the mark though, just heard a little too much Megatron and Starscream in there and Cyclonus was more of an obedient genera

Agrees (1)  Disagrees (13)
NCZ

Wheeljack’s voice was lighter than I expected but the delivery was spot-on, especially line 2. Cyclonus’s voice surprised me; reminded me more of Starscream but it fit pretty well. Loved your pained delivery at the end of the second monologue.

Loved your Cyclonus, thought only Tuxedo's edged it out. Pacing was just right, emotions were great. I have to admit though, I am not a big fan of your take on Wheeljack, just a little too 'hillbilly' sounding for me.

Agrees (12)  Disagrees (2)
NCZ

Wheeljack's Cajun (?) accent was an interesting touch, made him sound laidback yet badass. Cyclonus’s perfomance as a whole was certainly villainous, and the pain in monologue 2 was a highlight. Only criticism is that some lines were a bit too slow for me

I think your Wheeljack was 2nd only to Tuxedo's, loved your "Choke on that Con"! Your Cyclonus was solid as well, maybe could have been a bit deeper and more stoic but thats being picky I suppose.

Agrees (7)  Disagrees (3)
NCZ

Wheeljack’s "choke on that, con" was great, and I really liked your emotion and acting on monologue 2. Cyclonus was fantastic, really brought out his anger. The high voice helped make him sound tense, and the pain was excellent at the end of monologue 2.

You had a solid performance here, my only issues were the second line felt a bit forced for Arcee and I don't think there was enough of a difference in your two character voices. Your 2nd BA line was the highlight, liked the laugh!

Agrees (7)  Disagrees (4)
NCZ

Arcee’s voice was very fitting and the lines sounded believable, esp. monologue 2. Blackarachnia wasn’t too distinct from Arcee, but it was a good voice so I could forgive it. You really got the sultry first monologue and the wickedness of the second.

I quite liked your Arcee. Monologue 2 was fantastic, sounding believable and truly solemn. You hit Blackarachnia right on the head. The voice was really good; it and the delivery truly made her sound seductive and evil.

Two distinct and excellent performances. You nailed Wheeljack’s voice and sounded believable, and Cyclonus was utterly fantastic. The accent was a phenomenal touch and fit the character amazingly well, sounding truly evil and aggressive. Great stuff!

Arcee was a solid performance; the acting was good, voice fit, and you nailed the emotion in monologue 2. Blackarachnia wasn’t quite as strong as Arcee, but that’s not saying much because it was still pretty good.

Sorry to make this about me ( again... ) but is there any way to actually work with the performers? They seem like really talented and insightful people who would be fun to work with or even do a quick read through with. If there are any volunteers that would be great but any alternative suggestions would be cool to! Sorry if this is the wrong spot to post this. I just figured this would be the first place a performer would look.

This was the toughest round for me for a couple reasons. First and foremost, it's because all of you did a fantastic job! In Season 1, this was the round I was eliminated, so to those 4 of you who don't move on, I definitely know how you feel! Further complicating my decision was knowing that only one 1 person moves on because of our voting. As much as I wanted to vote for my top pick, I felt my vote would be better used to support someone who may not have been a Special Judge pick, but had good fan support.

TuxedoTaargus, you absolutely killed it man! Based on Tara's & Yuri's feedback, I'm sure you're moving on to Round 4...so I couldn't bring myself to vote for you. I hope you understand!

I voted for RitsukaFlame. Her performance this round was solid, but I'm also taking into consideration her Chun-Li and Rainbow Dash performances too. Bottom line, I really want to hear what she can bring in Round 4.

Regardless of who moves on, I consider you all winners! You've made it this far, and in the process received feedback from some VO heavy-hitters. AND you get a free copy of VO/VA (which I'm ordering as we speak...) Best of luck to you all!

As an avid Transformers fan for my entire life, I think you all did some great work. For the most part you all managed to empart emotion into the roles. But at the end of the day you can only vote one way!

I fully admit to being biased towards Transformers and so was probably a little too tied up with exact comparisons, but I tried my best to distance myself from the exact similarities (but hey, it's very hard to do, and I'm not ashamed to admit that!)

My two top pics though would be TomStheVoice for the males, and RitsukaFlame for the females.

Tomsthevoice - probably the closest Jackie performance and I think you nailed Cyclonus' mix of gravelly ominous words and attitude.

RitsukaFlame - as a big big fan of TF Prime's Arcee I think you really nailed the emotion in her voice and I felt the urgency, sadness and dedication in there. Blackarachnia also was a good mix of seductiveness and condascension.

Overall I ended up with RitsukaFlame - female Transformers are a rare breed, and are tough to capture emotionally.

Oh man, this was a tricky one to decide on! Excellent performances from everyone involved, truly.

While I initially thought "gruff Southerner" when going over Wheeljack's lines, TUXEDOTAARGUS' voice won me over. Seemed to hit all the right notes and emotions while still keeping things serious. Excellent.

My favorite Cyclonus was quite a tough decision, but I finally decided on TOMSTHEVOICE. While I thought it might've been a little lower (something I know that I couldn't accomplish with my higher voice, haha), I thought it hit the mark with both an angry and commanding presence.

For Arcee, I found RITSKUAFLAME to be a standout. The voice was mature and reasonable, yet the little outbursts of emotion showed more character aspects. Very nice!

Growing up with Beast Wars, I was instantly drawn to MOMOKI's Blackarachnia. I know that the voices aren't meant to mimic the original VAs, but Momoki had just the right amount of femme fatale and seductive charm, and the laugh on the 2nd monologue was great!

I wish I could vote for ALL of you, really. In the end I wound up voting for TUXEDOTAARGUS. Solid Wheeljack, and my second pick for Cyclonus. Best of luck to all of the finalists and congratulations for making it this far!

@Lapianoman Tara and Yuri have actually already selected their two choices. Their choices have nothing to do with any 'vote totals'. I know it's probably been said several times already, but I really enjoyed TUXEDOTAARGUS this round from all the men. I feel he picked the right voices and the right inflections in his performances to really sell the characters.

For the women, it gets a little trickier, since the women put out some solid performances. I have to narrow it down to characters.

My favorite Arcee, by a small margin, is RITSUKAFLAME! I just really felt the suffering Arcee was going through in the second line. The two Arcee lines chosen helped show her character beautifully. My second-place Arcee voice is BREE, because while the performances were pretty impressive, the emotions seemed a little off and the audio was really soft, which I think held back the performance a bit.

As for Blackarachnia, I have to give it to MOM0KI! She pulled off the character really well, in both acting and voice; almost made me think it was Laura Bailey doing it. My only gripe would be a slight inconsistency between the two lines, but it was an enjoyable performance.

Overall, my vote goes to TUXEDOTAARGUS, but this was a great round to listen to! Keep it up, everyone!!

An interesting round that was fun to listen to. For the men I think TuxedoTaargus did a really solid performance here especially on Cyclonus. Beyond the depth of voice, the acting itself was well done with a good pace for the lines backed by expressive delivery. TomSTheVoice gets my second pick for a good performance as well, with the only weird feeling coming from what I believe is slow pacing (will revisit this after I give it some thought).
For the women, I wanted to raise a point first by saying that I really want them to have had a round where they could voice a more feminine show or character? Street Fighter and Transformers seem like pretty tall orders with the My Little Pony round being a small concession with only the choices of little boy and the most tomboy-ish pony (my two cents).
Anyways, I picked MOM0KI as my first pick with her expressive acting driving her performance home. Distinct difference in delivery, the change of pacing, and approach for both Arcee and Blackarachnia makes this a solid showing. My second pick was RitsukaFlame for an expressive performance that I feel was held back by the voice chosen for Blackarachnia a bit.
Best of luck to the contestants, wish you all the best.

@Genesis to be fair, the shows we've picked may be geared more towards a male audience (bar MLP), but the characters aren't any less feminine.

Arcee - strong on the outside but vulnerable on the inside
Blackarachnia - seductress
NCZ (Admin)

@NCZ I guess we'll just have to respectfully agree to disagree because Street Fighter characters aren't very feminine with their deep character stories (Chun Li having been raised in a dojo basically by her father and as a fighter being constantly surrounded by guys. Rose having this disconnected personality that if you put onto a male character you'd still have the same opinion).

Round 2: Rainbow Dash is a tomboy. Spike is a boy.

Round 3: Arcee has historically always tried to fit in with the boys and doesn't really exude feminine at all in my opinion (especially in context of this contest... these lines are not close to feminine)
BlackArachnia is a feminine character, most definitely. No dispute here.

However, barring the character at an individual level, I think the contestants and viewers would be done a great service if a feminine show was in the mix. Hoping to pose this as constructive criticism and/or possible weight in shaping future rounds.

NCZ (Admin)
said at 8:30 PM on Wed Jul 25 2012
@Genesis If you're referring to young, girlish characters, then you do have a point. However, I'd say Arcee and Chun-Li are more of a mature, womanly femininity. They're not uber-girlish, true, but they're nowhere near butch. Still, we've got two more rounds in store. Perhaps by then your concerns will be alleviated.
Genesis
said at 9:30 PM on Wed Jul 25 2012
I understand that the rounds, themes, etc are decided really early on. My hope is that earlier on in the contest, girls should have an opportunity to showcase their 'girly' voices. Regardless if the opportunity is given in later rounds, I think at least one round featuring this in the early part of the contest will be welcomed by the female contestants.

While I agreed with the judges on certain points, I still give my vote to MOM0KI, yet another strong performance. Like they said, line 4 was the highlight of her performance. Line 2 felt rushed in some areas, but the overall acting, and the other lines really made up for it. The other female performances were also pretty solid. RITSUKAFLAME reminded me of the original actress for Blackarachnia. Bree was good as well, but some of her lines sounded pretty quiet. As for the males, TOMSTHEVOICE hands down. Not just for his delivery, but for having the most difference between voices. TUXEDOTAARGUS is close behind him. Great job to everyone overall.

A question to the judges. Why were more than a couple of the monologues made with from scenes where other characters speak? It really breaks the flow. I understand though that some characters don't speak as much as others. Also if any of the performers can explain how they over came that I would be very greatful!

@cardboardwalk What I did to make up for the invisible characters missing dialog is I just said what I assumed they would say and then replied to that in wheeljack's/ cyclonus' voice. After all was said and done I just edited out the other character's made up lines from the recording, and then I had my performance files to send in... however that being said I sat in my "recording booth" (closet) for like 5 hours trying to hash out the voices I felt was right. This was a fun and challenging round. I hope what I said makes sense.

@cardboardwalk this what somewhat answered below in my response to AMT.

"This is mainly due to the fact that these characters simply don't have lengthy monologues to choose from. There's a couple but for the most part it's stripping down a scene and merging one characters lines together."

I agree it breaks the flow but this is more to do with limitation on what dialogue was available for us to use. Had there been more full lengthy monologues then we obviously would've used them.

However, did you notice that none of the guys chose "Monologue 2", the only actual monologue for Wheeljack? I thought that was interesting.
My personal preference is to choose dialogue that expresses the character. Monologue 2 is recounting a story, so there's less "character" in it. I have a feeling that may be why the guys chose Monologue 3.
cardboardwalk

Awesome performances. I had a really hard time choosing who to vote for. :/

For females, I had to go with MOM0KI. For Arcee, I really loved how she portrayed monologue line 2. The acting and essence to her character were spot on. Also for Blackarachnia, I liked how she made her sound mysterious and seductive. Really good job on both of the characters.

And for males, TomStheVoice.
What drew me in was his acting. And his voices were very distinct. Also, the accent for Wheel Jack was a nice touch, by the way.

But in the end, I ended up voting for MOM0KI.

I'm having a hard time voting for this one, some of the people excelled REALLY WELL in one line with one voice, but then in another line, it wasn't quite executed as well.

For the males, Idk anything about transformers really, but there seems to be a lot of anger in some of the lines, and some of the anger is executed as if to portray some comic relief, idk if that's the character or not. But the sudden burst of anger, and then to calm, but menacing tone doesnt seem to flow well in some of the performances

For females, the pacing seems a tad too slow, especially for blackarachnia. Again, idk the characters, but it seems to me that theres a difficulty capturing the sultriness of her character, while still making her appear like the villain and of course, keeping a good pace.

If I had to choose... I think, I'll have to vote for TuxedoTaargus this time around.
Foxwolf (Admin)
said at 1:45 AM on Sun Jul 22 2012
@AMT keep in mind most of the dialogue that was given as choices were disjointed (ie. part of a 2-character conversation which you can read in the lines above) so the emotions suddenly switching is expected.
This is mainly due to the fact that these characters simply don't have lengthy monologues to choose from. There's a couple but for the most part it's stripping down a scene and merging one characters lines together.
AMT
said at 1:12 AM on Tue Jul 24 2012
@Foxwolf That's true. But its also like Tara and Yuri said, I think a significant pause in between would've helped, especially to bridge the gap between the lines, as much as possible. But I know, its not exactly as easy as it sounds.

I think Tuxedo did very well in that fact tho. Some parts, just like with other peoples lines, were a tad too dramatic in places, but it still managed to flow well in the end!

@Lapianoman Yea, I saw that and thought it was pretty interesting that he featured those two the same week they were guest judging for us!

Well, having been able to hear all but Tuxedo and Ritsuka...this round is going to be tough!! Hopefully the votes and Tara/Yuri's selections make this a little bit easier on us judges!! :)

@Bree Don't sweat it. I've been hearing some incredible takes this season. I'm sure you'll give us something to remember.

I'm not exactly familiar with Transformers. I watch Transformers Prime on Netflix, but that's about it.

When is the deadline for BTSers?
Foxwolf (Admin)
said at 7:26 PM on Thu Jul 19 2012
@FoxyLee13 end of this season. you got plenty of time :) basically if BTSers want to be eligible for the prize, they'll need to have submitted a performance for each round (and callbacks if applicable) before the end of the season. only Finalists have a deadline for each Round.
VocalChameleon

@Foxwolf Looking back on Season 1, I noticed there are BTS submissions for those too. Are they just for if we want to practice some more?
Foxwolf (Admin)
said at 9:42 PM on Thu Jul 19 2012
@VocalChameleon yeah, after i made BTS submissions open to the whole BTVA community, I figured may as well for Season 1. Doubtful people will submit though coz the season's over. But it's there if people want it :)
VocalChameleon
said at 11:02 PM on Thu Jul 19 2012
@Foxwolf I might give those a shot.

One thing, though. In "Round 4" of Season 1, to we have to record the entire monologue or just a few lines from the monologue?
Foxwolf (Admin)
said at 11:14 PM on Thu Jul 19 2012
@VocalChameleon just go for 1 version of the entire monologue. but to be honest, just record what you will challenge you :)

@AWIG yup. if you can see the submission form on a page, you're good to go.

I'm gonna say right now this is going to be the most horrible round to vote/judge for :( Just over half of you guys have submitted but each one is soooooooooooo good!! :D

Also, I've updated the numbers on how finalists will move on. Give this is a one-off time when we have 2 Special Guest VA Judges, we thought it be best that we ask Tara and Yuri to each select their own favorites to move onto Round 4.

@Foxwolf that's a pretty good idea with the numbers change... I was wondering how that was going to work.

@MOM0KI I kind of scan listened to everyone's performances (will listen more thoroughly when I give my feedback) but I didn't hear the skip. In any case, I'm sure it's so brief it won't take away from all 4 of your lines overall :)

Well there they are, I have submitted my performances. I have to say I think each round is getting harder and harder(as it should be of course, that's what makes this fun)! Though, if Ya'll keep this up and there's not going to be anything left of me by the end of the contest! Just a stuttering shell of a man. lol. I can't wait to see everyone else's takes (BTSers included)! Good luck everyone!

It was harder for me to get enthused into doing this round because of my lack of attachment toward the Transformers franchise, but on the other hand, that also made it easier for me to perform vocal interpretations of my own rather than impersonations of past versions of the characters.

You can probably expect some self-commentary when the behind-the-scenes page for this round goes up.

Of course it would be the two characters whose voices are ingraved in my ears. XD This was hard, I had to keep on thinking of different interpretations because I felt the need to impersonate them! But I think it payed off :) And best of luck to everybody else! You are all doing great!

@TamaRanEd agreed. a LOT of great takes on the My Little Pony characters.

I can personally say that I've seen a lot of improvement in some BTSer's when comparing Round 1/2 BTS performances against their first auditions.

"A crashing landing" => "A crash landing".

Still need to add the character descriptions which I'll add in the next few hours.

Ahhh, yeah. Now we're talkin'. A little bit more Hasbro in the voice acting diet, eh? Very eager to see the latest contestant's takes on these guys. I'm even more disappointed in LM-G1's unfortunate leaving. I think he'd excel in this round for somewhat obvious reasons lol.

No Optimus Prime or Starscream? Aw man!
Foxwolf (Admin)
said at 1:06 AM on Sun Jul 15 2012
@Strikernofear We always try to avoid characters with iconic voices. That way it doesn't become a voice mimicking contest and voters don't get biased because they're used to those iconic voices.
NCZ (Admin)
said at 11:21 AM on Sun Jul 15 2012
@Foxwolf Yeah, exactly. Besides, I've always been a fan of the more obscure Transformers. It's nice to give them some exposure when most people who aren't fans usually can't name one character after Prime, Megatron, Bumblebee, and Starscream.

Cool, a Transformers round. Though, the few shows I've watched are Beast Wars(vaguely remember watching that as a kid, watching it now on Netflix), and Transformers Animated(not a fan of that one though. Nice to see one of the choices is from Beast Wars.

So last season's Disney round was my personal favorite, coz not only did we use lines from a couple of my top animated movies, but because we got to basically hear "double" the performances. And they were just all round fantastic.

So I can't WAIT to hear what you Finalists bring to these characters, esp for a franchise that is a fan favorite for all of the Judges ;)

Please note, I'm again behind with character descriptions which I'll aim to add tomorrow. If you feel comfortable or know the characters well enough, submit whenever you're ready :)
MOM0KI
said at 11:39 PM on Sat Jul 14 2012
@Foxwolf Wait, so... I'm sorta confused )= So.. Since we have to do both the characters, you said "create 2 distinct voices for each of your characters." so do you mean we have to have 2 voices for each character? Having 4 voices in total? Sorry, I'm a little confused ;.;
Foxwolf (Admin)
said at 11:44 PM on Sat Jul 14 2012
@MOM0KI actually my bad. very incorrectly worded :S (which I've corrected above)

So just 2 voices. One for each character :)
