 4 Shout Outs!
Why hasn't this guy gotten more work? He kinda reminds me of Tony Jay & Jon Avner. An epic voice, especially as Gargoyle.

@GreenGoblin75 While I do feel his Gargoyle voice was ill-fitting for the character, that voice would be perfect for Darkseid in a Justice League Anime or Apocalypse in an X Men animated series.

@EPA Deane How was it ill-fitted...!?

@Fernie Fernandez Gargoyle is supposed to be calm and controlled, while having subtle traces of genocidal insanity and intellectual arrogance.

Bulen's Gargoyle feels too loud, deranged and agrandising for my liking.

@EPA Deane To be honest, I don't think he was loud, but I love that Tony Jay vibe he gives on Gargoyle...!

@Fernie Fernandez Bulen may be a good voice actor, but as Gargoyle... I personally think David Frank Jones has the advantage here. NADIA, while having moments of cartoonish action, otherwise works well when it's played straight, and ADV's version does well with that.

Gargoyle in particular is supposed to be played straight; he's not an over-the-top evil monster, but a dangerously genocidal, arrogant, down-to-earth sort of villain which is what makes his villainy all the more appalling. Having him sound over-the-top only kills the credibility of the character, making him more of a stock villain as opposed to a complicated individual. Jones' portrayal has a bit more subtlety, and to me, is the better performance because of that. Because Gargoyle isn't just a generic cartoon villain; he's more than that.

Bulen sounded pretty relaxed at the beginning of his clip.

Then he goes into the terrifying yelling which just sounds really cool.

While I like the voice Bulen uses and can see what he was trying to do, to me it's just not Gargoyle. I didn't find his yelling terrifying or cool, honestly... I was kinda underwhelmed. It just feels too much like a typical cartoon villain, and Gargoyle is more complicated than that. To me what Bulen is doing feels more appropriate for a supervillain style, but it doesn't feel very fitting to a character like Gargoyle. While I was a bit uncertain about Jones' take as the character, he gradually won me over and I felt he got better. Even the few times when Jones raises his voice is less borderline cartoony. Again, NADIA is supposed to be played straight, and Streamline's version plays it too much like a cartoon. Of course this is my opinion and I can understand what they were trying to do, but to me it just doesn't suit a show like NADIA. ADV's Monster Island Studio, while less renowned, I felt, had the better approach, as did the portrayal of the characters. They just felt more natural to me.

I also find Marie's crying in that clip to be a bit overdone. Margaret Cassidy, to me, was far more believable. I mean no disrespect to Cheryl Chase; she's a good actress, but Cassidy is just the more authentic of the two.

Fair enough. Admittedly, I still haven't had time to check Steve in context, but the clips really blew me away. Hearing David's clips, the delivery is very good, but the voice itself is very plain. Perhaps if Steve used his voice with David's delivery, you'd like him more in the role.

I personally just find Bulen an underrated actor. Once I watch the Streamline eps with Gargoyle, I will reply again.
