Trivia & Fun Facts:

Favorite Roles: Goku and Onsokumaru

One of the roles Sean originally auditioned for in Dragon Ball Z was Captain Ginyu. He was disappointed at the time when he didn't get the role and was given the role of Goku, until he realized he was voicing the lead character several episodes into production.

After years as a professional classical musician, Sean Schemmel began his career in voice acting by doing voice-overs for puppet theatres.

As the voice of Goku, Sean is a very popular draw for voice actor signings.

He was very excited about voicing Rick (Blue Gender) because he got to use his natural speaking voice for the first time.

First professional voice actor to comment on our Facebook page.

[As posted by Sean on our Facebook page]

"My favorite color was blue, but has shifted into Orange as of late. Long story.

My favorite junk food is Entenmenn's donuts, cookies, Doritos, and various sodas, (virgil's rootbeer is the best. period.)"

Happy Birthday Sean Schemmel!

Not only is he extremely underrated and underused but he's also the voice of one of my childhood heroes Son Goku! He is without a doubt the perfect English voice of Goku. Ok I didn't grow up with him exactly since I live in Canada and thus had the Ocean dub, I never saw the FUNimation dub till I was in my teens and once I did, I realized that childhood nostalgia be damned, I thought Sean was better than all of the Ocean voices "Kakarot" had over the years...sorry Kirby, Ian and Peter you guys were good but Sean's been the most consistent, having continued to voice him since he first landed the role. I mean Sean wasn't perfect at all first...I mean he really wasn't that great it also didn't help that Goku in the dub was change from a a grown man-child who loved a good fight to a wannabe Superman knockoff. However thanks to him and everybody else at FUNimation wanting to learn how to improve as VA's and the more and more they kept doing DBZ Sean eventually found his groove and since Dragonball Kai and on (which was around the time I discovered the FUNi dub), he has been absolutely perfect giving a perfectly youthful yet tough badass voice that I felt Goku's always needed. I think the best quality that Sean brings to Goku is the intensity of the screams he can pull off, especially in Battle of Gods. I think that has been the best outing thus far Sean's done as Goku. I remember getting chills when I heard the Battle of Gods dub trailer and even just thinking about it still does that to me and that's awesome.

With that said his King Kai is a mixed bag, you can really tell it's still an impression of Don Brown's version and it gets annoying real fast, however with that said Sean was awesome as Nail too.

I also loved his performance as Lucario, Katoran, Gaston, Conrad, Shigeru Murota, Roto, Mr. Akashi, Nobody and his numerous other roles on Gundam Unicorn and Pokemon, I did especially enjoy his Colress, Cyrus, Archie and even Hugh. He also does one hell of a spot on Christian Bale impression when he did Batman for The Dark Knight Rises IOS game.

It's pretty sweet he's now voicing in LA, he's gotten a few cool gigs doing some western cartoons and games but I've been wondering when is he going to voice in an anime dub recorded in LA? It surprises me that he hasn't already? I know he's not getting out of dubbing since he knows and we know he is Goku, then again in LA he doesn't really needed too....still it's awesome he's now working there and I await to see what future roles he can get.

Looks like Schemmel is getting into the pre-lay/ western cartoon stuff if he's getting cast in Sofia the First.

As a voice actor, we can't JUST do anime… We audition for many shows and take what we can get. And we can't just be open to cartoons and video games. We're actors and we have to be open to many different forms of acting. Such as stage acting and on camera acting. And there are many different types of voice acting as well. Not just character work. There's Audio books, commercials, narration, industrial work, radio, documentaries, etc… So I'm not surprised that Sean is doing voice over work for Disney.

"We're actors and we have to be open to many different forms of acting. Such as stage acting and on camera acting. And there are many different types of voice acting as well. Not just character work."

These are pretty valuable things to keep in mind. The point about being an actor first, and voice actor second is especially critical. It's something that should be emphasized a lot toward anyone looking to get their foot in the door.

Though this site mainly focuses on the animation type stuff (for now), there's a lot more to the business than that. The books I've read tell me that things like narration, promos, and the like are pretty lucrative and open plenty of opportunities, so it's important to be well-rounded, equipped and glad to work for any kind of job, even if animation is the most "glamourous" or easily-visible for fans.

@TheMorganBerry I kinda knew that stuff already, but thanks for reminding me & expanding on it a bit further. Not only that, but in this business, you need to have pretty thick skin, cuz you lose more roles than you get. An actor will audition for something, then they won't get it. Then they move on to the next one. You're absolutely correct. Voice actors or just actors in general have to be open to various forms of acting.

I must be the only die hard DBZ weaboo that has any respect for Sean. Seriously. -_-
Even though I really don't like his Son Goku, I overlook that and see that all his other roles are absolutely outstanding. In my opinion, he was one of the better voices for the 4kids dub of One Piece and I LOVED that he returned for Funimation's dub of Strong World.
As for his Goku, what bothered me wasn't really as much as his voice as it was the fact that the original dub was horribly rewritten, and made Goku VERY out of character. Wasn't his fault in the slightest.
Once the dub for Dragon Ball Kai came around (which stuck to the original dialogue), I warmed up to it a lot more and noticed that it actually is a LOT better than what it was when he first started. :)

Please Funimation, please!) the future of Dragon Ball has in store for Goku! I hope to see you get as many new roles as possible as well, you're a very talented person who deserves it!

@Nightmare Crusher Same here. At least he has reprised Gaston for the Berserk films, so that is a good start.
said at 9:22 AM on Thu Nov 21 2013
@Nightmare Crusher it's great that he's getting roles in LA but he should also be more suited in roles for funimation since his only role is goku most of the time and should get a number of roles in funimation. but, if sean moved to LA, I predict he'll get less roles in LA anime and some roles in video games

He has a very comforting voice and I grew up with him and the FUNimation cast. It's been awesome as a fan to see how much he's improved as an actor since then: he's really expanded his range in recent years as well. He's my favorite voice for Goku, and he was hilarious as Dr. Crowler and Gonard as well.

Man, you can tell just by looking at this list and listening to some of these secondary characters that he has gigantic range that simply is not being used. He may mostly be known for his performance as Goku, but his range really is incredible and it's a shame there are a lot of people that haven't realized it.

I would compare him to the versatile likes John of DiMaggio and Daran Norris! To have that much range and the power to voice a character like Goku... dang.

If he voices a character of the One Piece Funimation Dub he should voice Jabra using his Archie and Cyrus voice from Pokemon. But unfortunately he not in more Funimation dubs.

Some great performances in other anime but he'll always be the voice of Goku (blessing and a curse). :P

Kind of cool how he's worked on both the 4Kids One Piece dub and the Funimation One Piece dub; the latter only being additional voices though.

Hopefully he actually gets to voice a character with an actual name in the future and then it'll be official!

I hope NYAV Post also gets dub the Berserk movies that VIZ Media unfortunately picked up... (would've preferred Sentai Filmworks or Funimation since they've outsourced dubs before)

VIZ usually keeps it local (L.A.) and only occasionally outsources to Vancouver.

Anyways although it wasn't the largest role I liked Schemmel's work as Gaston.

The interaction between Guts (Marc Diraison) and him felt very natural even though they record separately (like all dubs).

They really seemed like they were comrades with a great relationship.

I was really pissed when Gaston died. For a moment it seemed like he would survive but no!!!!

Why did Kentaro Miura have to kill a good character. :)
