Happy belated Birthday Peter Cullen. One of the greatest voice actors of all time in my opinion. His roles are iconic while at the same time all very good. His range does go a little under-appreciated as his roles from the 1981 spiderman series showcase here.

Happy Birthday Peter Cullen! THE Voice of Optimus Prime.

If there is one VA that has managed to capture the hearts of Transformers fans everywhere it's Peter Cullen. He breathe life into the role of a Saturday Morning Cartoon Hero whose ultimate purpose was to sell more toys and made him into something more. Someone we could look up and admire.

I feel nowadays and don't get me wrong Peter is amazing as Optimus, I feel he's now just typecast way too much as Optimus. Back in the 80's Cullen was in a lot more series and played more types of characters including villains and thugs and he sounded great in those roles.

Personally my favourite role of his is actually Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh and I'm still quite sad they recast Eeyore a few years back. I hope he gets the chance to reprise the role someday soon before its too late.

I also really loved his work as Ironhide, Monterey Jack, K.A.R.R and his many roles in Marvel back in the day. I mean who would have imagined Optimus Prime once did The Hulk or Mysterio....and even the dreaded Red Skull? I know its unlikely but I hope he can branch out and do more. I'd also love it if Peter got to voice Primus in the Transformers franchise. I mean how fitting would that be?

Happy birthday, Peter! Such a magnificent voice. He is so great as Optimus Prime and let's not forget Eeyore.

He really showed off his range on the Filmation Ghostbusters toon. Something he doesn't seem to do anymore unfortunately. But, hey I still love that deep Optimus voice.

................ Ok, WHY is he NOT being used in other productions? of course I want no one else to be Optimus (It seems like it's a galactic law now, and it's recently happened to Frank Welker with Megatron too thank God) but seriously, He could have been used in the Avatar, Ghibli dubs and all that jazz.

Hell, why not the Final Fantasy series?

@Aussieroth I'm *guessing* it might be a personal choice. Peter's been in the industry for nearly 40 years now. He's worked very hard and been involved in so many projects over the years. Anyone else in any other job would likely be retired at this point, but he's still walking up to that mic. He seems like the kind of elderly man who is completely content with just voicing Optimus on occasion from here on out.

He's probably inundated with offers to work, but he chooses to limit what he works on. He's coasting (not in a bad way). He's back in the saddle, more or less, but only when he chooses to be.

I mean, I'd LOVE for him to voice a character in something Marvel or DC-related these days, but if he just wants to be Optimus for his last years, then more power to him.

Again, that's just my guess - I could be completely wrong, ha ha.
said at 7:14 PM on Sun Dec 14 2014
@TylerMirage To an extent that's true, but his manager/management is extremely protective of him.

Plus he himself said that Optimus will always be his favourite and he's content on being Optimus in his dying days, but he would like to try other work too. (He was a bit sad, angry and confused that he wasn't going to voice Eeyore anymore.)

But otherwise... yeah.
said at 9:23 PM on Thu Jun 25 2015
@TylerMirage That may or may not be true, but I also have a slightly bit more cynical theory here. Namely that Hasbro tries to keep Peter Cullen around as Optimus to appease G1 fans since it worked so well with the first Bayformers movie.

Why do I say this you ask? Its because older voice actors are having a harder time getting work nowadays. Sure there are those like Rob Paulsen, Corey Burton, Maurice LaMarche and Jim Cummings. But there are also those like Michael Bell, Jack Angel, Peter Renaday and Alan Oppenheimer who are not getting as much work as they use to. Heck Buster Jones kept trying to get voice work all throughout the 2000s until he died of old age recently.

So in other words if it wasn't for Hasbro getting Peter to reprise his role as Optimus in the first Bayformers movie he probably would still be mainly playing Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh. Now granted Tyler could be right that Peter is deliberately focusing on Optimus and maybe an occasional nameless extra in Transformers productions by choice. But there is also the unfortunate possibility that Optimus is one of the only roles he could really get anymore.
said at 3:03 PM on Mon Sep 21 2015
@Pokejedservo Michael Bell was in "Turbo". There might still be hope!

I hope Peter Cullen gets to voice Eeyore again someday. I don't want Bud Luckey to be replaced, though. Maybe he and Peter could share the role, like how Paul Winchell and Jim Cummings shared the role of Tigger in the 1990s?

@Michaelsar That's not "the" Michael Bell we're referring to, though. The one in "Turbo" was Michael PATRICK Bell.

Peter Cullen is the best Optimus Prime ever. Not only for the live Transformers movies, but Transformers Prime too. He also made the right call quitting the role of a gloomy jackass. I'm not swearing on that one, that's just what a donkey is called.

@Legacyman I'm pretty sure Peter would take huge offense to this. One, he didn't quit, he was fired. Two, Peter loved doing Eeyore. It was one of his favortie roles.
TylerMirage (Admin)
said at 9:52 AM on Mon Oct 14 2013
@Nightmare Crusher I'm totally with you, NC, but to elaborate upon your first point... Peter neither quit NOR was he fired. Despite the bond between iconic characters and their VAs, the VAs do NOT "own" said role. If the VA genuinely doesn't want to voice the character again, then they WON'T. But that wasn't the case with Peter. Peter loved the role of Eeyore and would've loved to reprise the role. If the show creators/casting directors want to cast someone else in the role, they CAN. And that WAS the case with Peter. He didn't quit the role. He wasn't fired. It was just decided that they were going to get different VAs to voice Eeyore for various reasons.

Same way that Spider-Man has had various VAs throughout history. Do people say that Neil Patrick Harris "quit" Spider-Man? No. Do people say that Rino Romano was "fired" from being Spider-Man? No. Different shows, different years, different creative control, different cast, different choices. The universe dictated that Peter Cullen wouldn't be voicing Eeyore this time around. Simple as that.
Nightmare Crusher
said at 1:16 PM on Mon Oct 14 2013
@TylerMirage I didn't necessarily mean that he was literally fired, but you make a very valid point. My thinking was that since the cast for Winnie the Pooh has been so consistent for years and going by Peter saying that Disney told him he was no longer Eeyore beforehand that it was basically equivalent to being "fired."
said at 2:13 PM on Sat Oct 19 2013
@Nightmare Crusher are you so sure? Optimus Prime is his favorite role really! Don't get me wrong, the jackass was the only Pooh character with real personality. Truth is the Winnie the Pooh series is garbage. Any little kid can make it up. It was even a no brainer that the latest movie wasn't oscar worthy. I didn't see it because I know it's all crud from some kids imagination. Truely, Optimus Prime is the best character Peter Cullen ever voiced.

@Music Meister I posted a video in the "Transformers Dream Casts"-thread that shows Peter at a convention, and he does his own rendition of Frank's TFP Megatron voice. ... AND IT'S FRIGHTENINGLY GOOD. It's just as raspy as Frank's, but it's got that deep rumble of Peter's Optimus voice. Sort of like a raspy KARR voice. I had almost forgot that Peter actually has range, ha ha. I really hope that Peter plays Megatron (or some equally big villain) someday. I think it'd be a great choice. :D
