Happy Birthday Mike McFarland!!!

He was awesome as Jean Havoc, Master Roshi, and Baby in terms of voice over.

His voice direction is just fantastic too, especially his work on Fullmetal Alchemist and Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, along with Conqueror of Shamballa.

My personal favorite role of his (if he did indeed voice him because it certainly sounds like it) is Envy's true form in the first FMA. Envy's much different characterization in the 2003 anime resulted in the character having a form very different than the monster form in Brotherhood, and Mike just performed it brilliantly (especially with such little material).

"What's wrong? I thought you wanted to see... Then he abandoned me, and started over with his perfect family. Needless to say, I never liked being replaced..."

Happy Birthday Mike McFarland!

My top 10 favourite roles of his are:

1.) Master Roshi (Dragon Ball Z)
2.) Jean Havoc (Fullmetal Alchemist)
3.) Ryoji "Ranka" Fujioka (Ouran High School Host Club)
4.) Yajirobe (Dragon Ball Z)
5.) Rabo (Noragami)
6.) Deldro Brody (Blood Blockade Battlefront)
7.) Carnage Kabuto (One Punch Man)
8.) Kokabiel (High School DXD)
9.) Shota Jinnouchi (Summer Wars)
10.) Michael Muller (Monster)

It was really cool hearing Mike last year in One Punch Man, it's not that often Mike does LA does (only like a few games, Monster and the other odd gig here or there) but his Carnage Kabuto was a great example of his range as a VA. Definitely one of the many highlights of the One Punch Man dub.

It's also good hearing him as Master Roshi once more for Dragon Ball Super. Definitely looking forward to hearing Mike's Roshi in the later episodes of the series.

Happy Birthday, Mike McFarland! I'll go out of my way to admit that I like him more as a voice director than a VA, though he certainly did rack up some pretty enjoyable roles over the years; namely Jean Havoc, Buggy, Charlie Nash, Master Roshi, Myrmidon, Kokabiel, and Jean Kirschtein.

Happy Birthday Mike McFarland!

One of the FUNimation's top ADR directors, it's not so much just that his dubs are usually the best FUNi has to offer but the fact he's able to bring in talent from all over the place to voice in it. Especially with being the only ADR director to have had ever had Scott McNeil in an American Dub. That's awesome. FullMetal Alchemist both the original and Brotherhood are easily the best series he directed the dub for.

AS a VA his best role has to be Master Roshi. I still can't believe that when he originally cast in the role in his early thirties. It's one of the best old men voices I've ever heard and he's hilarious.

I also enjoyed his performances as Yajirobe, Jean Havoc, Jean Kirschtein, Ryoji "Ranka" Fujioka, Vidaldus Taka, Sky Master, Kokabiel and Michael Muller (from Monster).

The fact he's still one of FUNimation's original voice actors and still voice acting and directing too, is pretty awesome.

I think some of his finest dubs he's directed have to be the Mamoru Hosoda films he's directed thus far. The dubs for Summer Wars and Wolf Children really were phenomenal and Mike took what was already a great movie and I think helped elevate it even further.

His dub for the first season of Noragami was also excellent, I'm glad he got to cast Jason Liebrecht as Yato and his performance as Rabo was excellent, giving a really creepy ominous sounding voice and performance.

I also enjoyed his performances as Deldro Brody, Mashirao "Tailman" Ojiro, Charlie, Shota Jinnouchi and his many roles in Yu Yu Hakusho.

And while I still prefer him as an ADR director over an voice actor, He really is an excellent VA in his own right, I mean if a guy who was then 30 years old can pull off an convincing old man voice, then he's a brilliant and talented VA.

Happy Birthday Mike McFarland!

Master Roshi and Buggy are definitely my favorite roles of his. I'm also quite fond of Eighter and Yajirobe.

Also pretty interesting that he's worked on a few Houston and L.A. dubs a few years ago. I guess this was before he became a permanent fixture for Funimation. :)

My favorite dubs he's directed are One Piece and Shiki.

I originally assumed Shiki would be yet another overrated title that I would rate average/nothing special (e.g. Evangelion movies, Eden of the East and Trinity Blood) but I'm actually really enjoying it so far!

He does seem to direct a lot of the more "bigger" titles for Funimation, but since I don't really care for most of them I can't really complain if he does sort of use the same core group of VAs for lead roles.

For me there are very few FUNi dubs for certain anime titles I actually get excited about...

But if I were a fan of those titles I guess I can somewhat understand your frustration.

I noticed he has yet to cast these FUNi VAs in lead roles for titles he directs:

*Jamie Marchi
*Duncan Brannan
*Andrew Love

In McFarland's defense though I have noticed he at least does a better job integrating Houston talent (ADV Films/Sentai Filmworks VAs) than most of the other ADR Directors at Funimation. That should count for something. :)

e.g. David Wald and Shelley Calene-Black are both favorites of mine.
There are quite a few other Houston VAs I'd like to hear in some FUNi dubs; maybe he'll be the director to give them their chance.

He's an overrated voice director IMO. He's good, but he's not great.

Seems he likes to reuse a lot of the same VAs in all dubs he directs = manufactured dub, sometimes stales

Lately I don't even care about dub casts for stuff he directs because I can already predict most of who the VAs will be...

On the other hand dub directed by someone like Christopher Bevins always sounds fresh, casts new VAs and actually challenges some of the veterans/more experienced VAs instead of just typecasting them.

Getting off topic... this is supposed to be about voice acting itself.

Characters voiced by Mike McFarland I like:

*Master Roshi (Dragon Ball Universe)
*Buggy (One Piece)
*Sky Master (Heaven's Lost Property)
*Kozo Ukita (Kenichi)
*Jiro Yoshidayama (School Rumble)

Also a pretty good George (Case Closed) but I do prefer Dameon Clarke's voice.
