It's such a shame that despite his amazing talent and genuinely kind personality Michael still had to suffer through so much crap his whole life. He deserved so much better. RIP.

On a much more light-hearted note, I'm surprised that only one person here has mentioned that he composed some of the music in Sonic 3. I've known about that for awhile now and it still blows my mind.

@Nightmare Crusher

I remember how MJ working on Sonic 3 started as a weird conspiracy theory. It was so incredible following it over the years since as more and more evidence piled up confirming that it was true. The thing that most amazes me is that Brad Buxer more or less confirmed the game's credits theme was a demo for Stranger in Moscow (which is also my personal favourite MJ song).

It's too bad the whole situation has become a legal Pandora's Box for Sega. As far as I can tell it's the reason why S3&K have never received modernized ports on mobile or 3DS like 1 and 2 have, or why the 3 version of Ice Cap has never returned or been remixed.

It is pretty interesting though that 5 years later MJ was in Space Channel 5, so evidently there was no bad blood with him personally. I think it must've been his lawyers and/or producers that weren't happy about the Sonic 3 situation.

@NCZ I'm sure part of the issue with reusing the music also has to do with figuring out exactly who did what. There's four or five composers credited IIRC plus MJ and I think there's at least one uncredited Japanese composer who said they did the Blue Sphere song or something. Ice Cap probably has even more issues since Brad Buxer pretty much just copied an old song from aband he was in. Wouldn't surprise me of one of the other members had some rights to it as well. It's a shame that litigation and bureaucracy can keep good music down.

@Nightmare Crusher

Yeah, that's a big part of it. SEGA are usually really good at identifying which composer was responsible for each track on their soundtrack CDs. But whenever Sonic 3 music pops up, the composer is simply credited as "SEGA". I think they do it to cover their butt so there's no outright official proof as to which tracks were and weren't composed by MJ and his team.

Based on the evidence it's easy to infer which tracks were done by MJ's team (Ice Cap, Launch Base, Carnival Night, + miscellaneous ones like Knuckles' theme and act 1 boss) and which ones weren't, but specific composer credits are a total crapshoot aside from a handful of tracks that were confirmed via outside means. And yeah, you're completely right on Ice Cap. The fact that it was an unreleased song that was later released, but also copied and used for the game, is probably a massive can of worms in itself.

Gotta love The Man, eh...? It really is such a shame. 3 and Knuckles have one of the best OSTs in the whole series, as well as the 16-bit era of games in general. I wish someday it could all get worked out.

@NCZ As a litttle followup, I found out who that composer who did the Blue Sphere theme was: Jun Senoue. It's actually how he started on the series.

@Nightmare Crusher

Interesting, do you have a link for that? I remember reading somewhere that Blue Sphere was composed by someone named Milpo, so I wasn't sure if there was anything else about that. I do know for a fact that Senoue did the gumball bonus stage, Act Clear (his most enduring composition), and I think another bonus theme.

@NCZ I might have confused it with that bonus stage that appears near checkpoints. I always forget about that one. I also can't remember where I read the thing either, kept slipping my mind.

S'all good. Yeah, 3&K did get a bit happy with the minigames, didn't it?

This man deserved that 'King of Pop' epithet he received. He recorded more than a handful of memorable tracks within his discography; "Rock with You," "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'," "Billie Jean," "Beat It," "Remember the Time," "Leave Me Alone," "Smooth Criminal," "Black or White," and then of course the t/t off Thriller that needs no introduction. Plus there were MJ's contributions to "Do the Bartman" and "Somebody's Watching Me" by Rockwell; both are still lovely tunes tbqh.

He was actually a great actor too if Moonwalker and his notable guest appearance on The Simpsons were any indicators.

Once again, Happy Birthday and R.I.P Michael Joseph Jackson. A, B, C, it's easy as 1, 2, 3.

Happy Birthday and RIP Michael Jackson!

He truly was the King of Pop. The dude has killer moves and his songs were fantastic especially Thriller, Smooth Criminal and Beat It being my personal favourites.

His guest appearance on the Simpsons was very classic too, being one of the first major celebrity guest appearances and one of the best.
