After going through a compilation of most of his voice roles, I realized that he has quite the variety of voices. There were also several video game roles where I couldn't believe that it was him. With any actor I'm always impressed when I discover a role they did in a past or current game. Matthew Mercer is no exception.

I know his career in voice over started as early as 2004, but he has made quite the name for himself. I wish him all the best in his voice over career.

@Shaun Ince

Interesting thing to note: Matt actually mentioned in an interview that he started doing side VO for anime back in like 2000/2001, but back then it was just a hobby for him. It wasn't until around 2007/2008 that he decided to pursue voice acting full-time as a career and started to become more active in VO then.

Needless to say, I think he's come a pretty long way since. And as for his range of voices, if you watch Critical Role you'll find his range as a VA is quite incredible, even his fellow VAs in Critical Role have acknowledged his impressive range and talent as a voice actor.

@ScraftyIsTheBest To be honest, I'm not super interested in Critical Role, it's more of a fleeting interest at best, though I will say that you're completely correct when it comes to his vocal range.

Happy 35th Birthday Matthew Mercer!!

My Top Ten roles from him are:

1. Sinbad (Magi)
2. Aikuro Mikisugi (Kill la Kill)
3. Leorio (Hunter x Hunter)
4. Tygra (Thundercats)
5. Kiritsugu Emiya (Fate/Zero)
6. Mizuki Akabayashi (Durarara!!)
7. Yamato (Naruto Shippuden)
8. Kuroh Yatogami (K)
9. Prince Demande (Sailor Moon)
10. Gyuki the Eight-Tails (Naruto Shippuden)

I am Intrigued with how Matt's been able to have a very flexible schedule between doing Critical Role and doing anime to video games (both AAA and JRPG's) which is very uncommon for most actors to juggle between these medium's. Also a big congrats to being engaged to Marisha Ray!!!

Remember hearing him as Fei Long in Street Fighter IV, looking him and the other VAs up and finding out about There Will Be Brawl. Loved that series. Hard to believe that was 8 years ago and it's even more staggering when I look around and see how far he's come since then. I'm surprised how often I see people who love Critical Role who are even outside the VA fan sphere. I don't think it's fair when people think of him as "the guy who's not Troy Baker". Much as I love Troy, I don't think I could picture anyone else as Walter, Alvin, Jotaro, all those FE characters, Jack Cooper, Leon, Bayman, Cor...

Point being, Matt's a talented VA with his own set of skills in his own right and he's worked hard to get where he is. Needless to say, high noon has only begun for his career.

Happy birthday man. Also thanks for taking my head out of my ass.

Happy Birthday to one of the biggest juggernauts in voice acting Matthew Mercer. Whether he's popping in as one of the Additional Voices for stuff like Monsters University and The Last Of Us to making us jump in fear as Leon in the ever so popular Resident Evil he's voiced some of the finest and most memorable characters to grace our planet.

He's shown up in so many of my favourite things. The Old Republic, Nier: Automata, the Final Fantasy games, Miraculous, the Skylanders games, Digimon, Overwatch, Injustice 2, World of Warcraft, Far Cry, Smash Bros, Guild Wars, Thundercats. The big list just goes on and on.

I hope he's having a terrific day and many great thanks to all the roles you have performed. No matter how good or bad they are, you'll still always shine in the end.

Happy birthday to the mighty Mercer! He's always a delight to listen to, and he seems like a genuinely kind and humble fellow in real life, as well. I confess to being a complete sucker for most of refined characters- I've always had a spot spot for his take on Kuroh Yatogami, and I like what I've heard of his Yusuke as well.

His work in Fate/Zero deserves mention, too- notwithstanding the issues I may have with Kiritsugu, I can't deny that he did a wonderful job in bringing that tortured soul to life. I plan on rewatching the show someday; it'll be interesting seeing if my feelings towards the character have changed.

Happy birthday Mercer. From being directed to stare into the eyes of Patrick Seitz as Chrom from Fire Emblem: Awakening, to doing facial capture for a masked man as Deadshot from Injustice 2 and double checking with Mary Elizabeth McGlynn the name of a Digimon as Reapmon from Digimon Fusion. Not forgetting McCree from Overwatch where Matt is asked the time of day when the sun is at its highest.

Matt doesn't often get to play the young hero lead. It was pretty funny when he was cast as Koichi Madanbashi from Daimidaler with Koichi's "hands-on" approach in getting things excited. A convention panel with his Daimidaler co-star Emily Neves needs to happen.

Strange to know, but Matthew's 2016 titles are a lot more than Troy Baker's. Unless Troy is working on something that is taking a lot of his time (other than his music), I really don't know.

@itsmedeadpool

From what I heard, Troy has basically become so successful to the point where he can be a lot more picky about what he works on. Not purely in terms of business, but nowadays he mostly goes for things he finds creatively fulfilling (in other words, more enjoyable to work on). He does quite a few mocap+VO gigs which usually take up a good deal of his time (Uncharted 4 and MGS5 used up a lot of his time in recent years fwih), and afaik he's currently working on The Last of Us 2 which is definitely something big.

I also read a few articles a while ago in which Troy has expressed that he's conscious about oversaturating the market and doesn't want to be in every game ever. He's mentioned somewhere as well that he turns down job offers he doesn't find creatively fulfilling and tells them to get someone like Liam O'Brien, Travis Willingham, or...Matt Mercer himself.

@ScraftyIsTheBest Guess hard work and determination pays off. Well he got a hell lot of recognition and praise after his performance of Joel in The Last Of Us, so he would only be shooting his fans in their foot if he decided to retire from the role. He even reprised Snow Villiers in the World of Final Fantasy. So you're right he does sound pretty relaxed these days. But I wonder if Matthew can handle all those opportunities he's getting.
Travis hanged on to Ace till the end, Laura retired from Trunks (or just placed herself on hiatus for him), and what about Matthew?
This month he has Levi to schedule since AoT Season 2 is premiering on Toonami on April 29th, as well as later on he has more Trafalgar Law to record in One Piece. And there are even rumors that Matthew will voice Zamasu in Xenoverse 2/Super. So the question remains how will he manage. A lot of opportunities is cool, but overworking can do some damage.

@itsmedeadpool Matthew Mercer has said that even if Critical Role got very successful to the point where he could quit voice acting for good, he wouldn't give up voice acting for the world. He loves the craft way too much to give it up. Besides he's not quite at the level of Troy Baker & Nolan North where he can be very selective of all the video game roles. If that was the case he wouldn't have more video game roles than Troy in 2016.

In regards to Laura Bailey, she hasn't retired from voicing Trunks, she simply didn't have time to voice him in Dragonball Super, hence why they got Alexis Tipton to replace her. Also Laura is always willing to go back to past roles, she's mentioned this at conventions & even tweets.

@Shaun Ince That's good to know. I heard in a panel that Matthew is very much requested by FUNimation Directors, but he had to decline a lot of opportunities due to him being busy with Critical Role as well as a lot of other projects in LA.

Also good to hear Laura is still willing to voice her old characters, but due to her schedule she also doesn't even have that much time to reprise characters she recorded in LA. She couldn't reprise Rise Kujikawa in Persona 4: Dancing All Night (role got taken over by Ashly Burch), and Alexis Tipton took over Lucina for the new Fire Emblem DLCs. So it must be awesome that your schedule book is filled up, but it also must suck to decline your reprisal opportunities. I'm also pretty surprised Travis hanged on to Ace till the end, but he must have heard his fate somewhere and squeezed in time to finish wrapping him up.

@NCZ To be fair, his normal voice sounds more like Roger Craig Smith than Troy Baker, most of the time. Despite having a similar timbre, Troy's inflections & speech patterns exhibit "dreamy, sexy antihero" much more than Matt's younger, warmer speech.

That being said, it's true that Matt gets pigeonholed into "young, weighty, soft-spoken man" voice pretty often. It doesn't help that his Troy Baker dub hand-me-downs are based on a very similar voice.

* It also doesn't help that the dubbing pool is limited & only has a few people with that sort of voice (Kyle Hebert, Keith Silverstein, maybe Patrick Seitz), so it makes sense that he would do very similar voices, to the point where he's dubbed certain Japanese VA's 4-5 times.

However, it is great that NFL Rush Zone & Wabbit utilize greater parts of his range, like bass & low tenor voices.

Many actors do very well with "one voice", like Yuri Lowenthal & Patrick Warburton.
NCZ (Admin)
said at 10:34 AM on Sun Oct 2 2016
@huzaifa_ahmed Let me put it this way and note I'm trying not to make this personal, but instead about how the casting or direction part of the process and how this can affect the actors they choose and direct.

Patrick Warburton's voice is typecast to a certain type of role. If you hear his voice coming out of a character, you know they're kind of a simpleton, maybe a bit egotistical, impulsive, but more often than not from a decent, down-to-earth place.

Whether it's original or not, Warburton's voice alone is characteristic enough that it serves as a cue, signalling to the audience everything they need to know about a character.

Matthew Mercer doesn't have a "character type" and his voice is more "everyman" in nature. Casting directors seem to cast him as whoever.

Whether you have Alvin or Walter who are cocky douches, Sigma who is an experienced scientist, Fei Long who is a somewhat haughty martial artist/actor, Jotaro who's a good-hearted but surly delinquent, Cor Leonis who's some bodyguard dude, Chrom and Ryoma who are standard pure-hearted brave heroes...

All of them have the exact same voice and mannerisms. This voice alone tells me nothing about the character other than, "oh, it's Matthew Mercer again".

Likewise I dislike when an actor is hired to simply "mimic" the steps another actor took to make the role their own, instead of taking the character in an alternative direction that still captures the same spirit from a more unique approach.

That's why I feel kind of meh nowadays. Nothing against him personally, I still love There Will Be Brawl and some performances of his (e.g. Walter and Alvin as mentioned above came really naturally to him) but it's reached the point where once you start to hear an actor and not the character, it breaks the immersion a bit.

@NCZ I think Matthew Mercer's usual voice and mannerisms work the best for characters like Chrom, Ryoma and Leon. But for a guy like say, Kanji? Not so much. (Though it did sound like he improved a LOT as Kanji in DAN)

But he did get a chance to really show off what he can do in Fire Emblem Fates in my opinion. Both Azama and Shigure sound almost completely unrecognisable to me! I'm happy that Kris Zimmerman took advantage of what else his range is capable of aside from the usual "Deep voiced, pure-hearted and brave" kind of characters.
SNaG
said at 6:55 PM on Mon Oct 3 2016
@NCZ I totally agree, and while I would contend that most of the time Matthew acts well enough that no one role of that type he does is bad (they're all at least decent), he's typecast into that Troy Baker-esque replacement voice so much that he doesn't get to strut his stuff as much as he should.

It's pretty clear that Matt Mercer has a range on him, but the voice he uses for most of his roles (through no fault of his own, I must emphasize) is used for everything, which in turn negatively impacts how people can view his performance.

But yeah, I just hope more directors tell him to experiment a bit. Matt Mercer's a good actor IMO and deserves to have the chance to vary up his performances more than he does.
huzaifa_ahmed
said at 8:33 PM on Mon Oct 3 2016
@SNaG His Leorio from HxH is an interesting case where the Japanese VA, Keiji Fujiwara - Iron Man, Booker, Joker (the last two Matt auditioned for), Lao from Xenoblade Chronicles, & Troy's White Knight II character - has something similar to Matt's typical voice, but older, rougher-sounding

& you'd think Matt might use a similar, somewhat gruff voice, but he subverts it & uses a young voice that ends up sounding more like Yuri Lowenthal. Which is cool.

Many of his roles, such as Superman, Robin, Two-Face, & about 10 Japanese dub-overs, are also Baker hand-me-downs. So I dont blame him for using that sort of voice there. I mean, it's a replacement & naturally *should* sound similar.

But NCZ brings up a good point about "making a role your own" as well. It's different with dubs, because in that case, you've already got a performance to go off of, but generally you've got more leeway than a same-language replacement.

To complicate matters further, Kanji & other dubs have *two* performances to match.

But Matt does have range, it's just as I said, we dont really have many VA's that can pull off the sort of roles that Matt does.
HylianBelmont

@SNaG

Yeah, this is what I'm getting at. I feel like with ANY actor, having casting directors find themselves stuck in a rut is dangerous to their potential growth as an actor (limits how often they get a chance to spread their wings and tap into undiscovered talent), but it becomes more obvious with those actors who pop up a lot. And the whole Troy Baker thing I'm hesitant on because (my thoughts in him in those Baker roles aside) I feel anyone deserves better than to be perceived as constantly "in someone else's shadow".

But like HylianBelmont said, while I wasn't crazy for him being cast as Ryoma, Shigure and Azama were pleasant surprises and not the type of thing I've heard from him before. Shaking things up a bit more instead of constantly playing it safe is good for actors and the fans. Everybody wins.

That's what I'm getting at really. Don't hate the player, but I think there's things to say about the game.

@NCZ I have to agree.

I get why they usually have Matthew use his Troy Baker like voice, since he fills in the niche that became lost when Troy went union.

At least he currently has roles like Leorio and Bigfoot, that really show off his range.
NCZ (Admin)
said at 6:16 AM on Wed Oct 5 2016
@Autovolt

Troy Baker being union isn't the issue. He's said numerous times he has no problem with the idea of coming back to voice his previous roles, or having new ones.

This year has actually been relatively quiet for him. That's because he spent so much of his time recently doing voice and motion capture for Uncharted 4 and Phantom Pain (which took years to work on), and has reached the point where he can turn works 15-20 hours a day, can turn down roles he doesn't find creatively fulfilling, and is pursuing new ventures, answering emails, put out an album... Dude is just at a high place in the industry and busy. Granted the key thing to remember is he is very privileged to be in that position.
Stelman257

I feel like getting Troy Baker for his older dubbing roles is an impossible venture though? Like, even if they made the projects union I feel like most studios that work in that department are way too intimidated to even consider going "Oh hey lets try getting Troy Baker in/back for this role!"

Interesting you mention that he's cooled down a bit because he's basically made all the success he'll need (and absolutely fantastic job doing so, he deserves it), where did you get this impression from? Not calling you out, just legitimately curious. I'd personally love to see Troy do something other than Marvel/DC/AAA, but that just doesn't seem like it'll happen.

I don't get or really agree with this personally. I've always thought Matthew Mercer has sounded fantastic in every role he's cast in, purely because he's got the acting skill, nuance and sexy voice to go with it all.

Your complaints remind me of people who hate on Yuri Lowenthal, JYB or Vic Mignogna. I mean hey fair enough, it's your opinion and that's cool, but I definitely don't think what your saying is true. Sounds like you just don't like hearing the mans so called "normal" voice, which is fine. But call it what it is haha, I feel like trying to justify it with lots of jargon is silly.

Like with me and say, Greg Ayers. Not a fan at all, but sometimes he lands a golden role or two where his voice works and I like it just fine. That seems to be the case with you and Matthew Mercer.

As to the discussions here, welp, such is the nature of the industry and what work we are offered, and largely what the director/producer want for the character. Many times you try something new/different in the booth, and they just want to hear that natural voice. Sorry if it bothers folks. Not much I can do about it. Just hope you all don't get sick of me! ;)

@MatthewMercer

Hey dude. I really appreciate stopping by to give the insight. Stuff like this is probably the highlight of the gig.

I do want to say, and I should say this to the userbase of the site in general - I mean this sincerely. Not wanting to sound like a buttkisser or like I'm backpedalling or anything. I'm really sorry if I came off sounding like an a-hole or too harsh or whatever. Sometimes when I say things I try to be frank about it, but I realize that maybe it might not always be the best. I have a bad habit with rashness too. Sometimes I say things that I may not always mean 100% because I just say them impulsively without really thinking about what it is or communicating as clearly or objectively as I can. And then like 24 hours later I wake up and I'm all, "god, did I write that?" Honestly, maybe I'm a bit jealous too. Gigs like Titanfall 2 and Overwatch and FFXV are nothing to sneeze at.

I wanna make this a community that's inclusive to everyone whether you're an admin or a mod or a regular user or a voice actor. Part of me feels like maybe I can do better on that front since I have my off days. So if I ever upset you or anything like that, I take that very seriously and personally and will vow to improve things.

(PS... Again, not to sound like a kissup or anything, but I won DOA5: Last Round in a giveaway recently... Really cool job as Bayman. Had absolutely no idea it was you. Just putting that out there.)

Keep up the good work dude. Acting's a cutthroat industry and really, it's always a matter of what the director wants. Once again I'm sorry if any of what I said caused any offence and I mean that sincerely. I have a lot of growing up to do and I appreciate having a mature, reasonable response from you. All the best.

@NCZ Not a worry at all, bud! We've all got our respective thoughts and opinions, and they are individually valid. I just wanted to shine a little light on why some things are the way they are, and how some performers have little control over that. You guys foster a great community from what I see here, and please keep that up!

Often gets recognition as "that guy who sounds like Troy Baker," but I actually really liked his Edge Maverick voice. He's more diverse than people give him credit for -- I can accept getting eliminated by McCree in Overwatch in part because of his performance!

If you don't want to be spoiled about a particular series/movie/game then it's generally a good idea to avoid deliberately seeking out information regarding it. Generally there's leeway within the first few weeks when everyone is new, but after that, you have to know what you're getting into.

Awakening in particular came out 4 years ago. And Fates has multiple storylines.
Allele
said at 11:04 PM on Wed Jul 6 2016
@NCZ I can understand Awakening, but Fates was not a simultaneous world-wide release so it's quite new at the moment. Out of all the possible voice lines, someone chose one where, a main character, sound like they are basically killing them-self.
I agree that I should have been more careful, but it seems a bit careless here and more care could have been taken in choosing a line.

Happy Birthday Matthew Mercer!!

Loved his performance Kiritsugu Emiya, he nailed every aspect of his character making him his most noteworthy role to date.

I also loved his numerous roles as Aikuro Mikisugi, Sinbad, Yamato, Prince Demande, Tygra, Bigfoot, Chrom, Iron Man/Tony Stark, Kuroh Yatogami, and Jotaro Kujo.

I also enjoyed his most recent performance as Leorio Paladiknight in the 2011 version of Hunter x Hunter. I was at first hesitant when Viz Media announced Matt Mercer in the role as Leorio, since I wanted Kirk Thornton or Keith Silverstein in the role, but after four episodes into the show he never failed to disappoint and nailed the role. I loved that Matt get's to play a someone that is considered the comic relief out of the four main characters, but having his share of his serious moments in a few episodes, which you don't see in many of his typecasts. So Big Props to his performance as Leorio.

Good luck on continuing gaining more voice over roles in the future, and Happy Birthday. :)

Happy birthday Matthew Mercer, the new Troy Baker and American Daisuke Ono.

While he's been active as early as he late 90s/early 2000s (he's appeared in several Animaze dubs including Cowboy Bebop, The Big O and Trigun), including even appearing in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, he truly began to shine in the 2010s.

Kiritsugu Emiya is by far his most noteworthy role, playing the jaded and cynical anti-hero who is conflicted over the idea of the needs of the many as a justification for his actions.

Other noteworthy roles include Yamato, Kanji Tatsumi (these two roles are taken from Troy Baker), Superman (he can honestly make a good one in Injustice if Netherrealm made an alternate nonunion/anime dub-style cast of it as DLC :)), Fei Long, Kurtis Stryker, Leon S. Kennedy, Kuroh Yatogami, Tyra, Robin/Tim Drake, Melvin Voyager/Atlas (his first Funimation role), Tony Stark/Iron Man, Levi, Sinbad, Shukuro Tsukushima, Chamber, Aikuro Mikisugi, Reapmon, Beezlemon, Chrom, and Fei Long.

Congratulations on landing roles as Jotaro Kujo (can't wait to hear more of you once more JoJo gets dubbed), Prince Diamond, Leorio Paladiknight, Trafalgar Law and McCree (he is now officially Jotaro Kujo).

@4xNicholas Actually, I found his dubbing Hiroshi Kamiya much too deep for my liking. Someone with a voice like Josh Keaton or maybe RCS would have been great.

Matt is actually pretty close to the timbre of Keiji Fujiwara (who is Leorio & a few other of Matt/Troy's characters - Joker, Booker, Iron Man, & in White Knight Chronicles II, off the top of my head). A bit lighter, but it's mainly that Matt's speaking is very warm & light-sounding.

Listen to Troy Baker speak to understand the difference.

@Joel the Pokekid I believe you're thinking of Patrick Seitz?

Matthew Mercer is the "replacement actor" for Troy Baker.

What's funny is that both Seitz & Mercer have relatively awkward-sounding speaking inflections in comparison to their "higher-demanded" counterparts.

Basically, Matt & Patrick are Troy & Travis with nerd inflections. 0_0

They're so much more than just "replacements", though, & I think a lot of people lose sight of that.

Happy Birthday Matthew Mercer!

It's pretty incredible that he sounds pretty spot on to Troy Baker and it's a great thing since Troy is no longer voicing in anime, Matthew is picking up where he's left off and does a terrific job doing so.

Kiritsugu Emiya is easily his best and most finest performance to date, giving a cool gruff voice to the very tired world weary cynical (anti)hero pragmatist.

I also really enjoyed his performances as Sinbad, Aikuro Mikisugi, Levi, Mizuki Akabayashi, Black Vise, Chrom, Rihan Nura, Reapmon, Anarky, Robin, Tony Stark/Iron Man and Jotaro Kujo from what I've heard in the test dub released last year. He is a perfect fit for Jotaro in English and I'm hoping he's here to stay for the role as apparently he's been a huge fan of Jojo's Bizarre Adventure for quite a long time, no doubt this was a dream come true for him.

I also cannot wait to hear him as Prince Demande in Sailor Moon, no doubt that will be an epic performance.

also the fact he was announced as the English voice for Trafalgar Law today of all days is awesome and no doubt an excellent birthday present.

He's got far more lucrative & perhaps more artistically rewarding, jobs available. One of the most in-demand for video game VO, especially games with tons of motion capture...which takes months off his schedule.

Not sure how Yuri Lowenthal, Kari Wahlgren, & Steven Blum all manage it, but it's impossible to deal with tight, low-budget dubbing schedules when he has such a time-consuming schedule

He was simply fantastic as Prince Demande in the Viz dub for Sailor Moon and Crystal, so deep, so smooth, so regal sounding, he nails it and definitely brings to mind the late Kaneto Shinozawa's portrayal in the original anime. Definitely one of the major highlights of the Viz dub. It's definitely one of my favourite performances of his thus far.

One of my new favourite roles of his as of late is his performance as Leorio Paladiknight in Hunter X Hunter (2011), oh man is he absolutely hilarious in this role. What I love about his performance is that 1.) he sounds almost like Kirk Thornton who is I originally wanted to voice Leorio in the first place and 2.) It's such a major change of pace from his usual type of roles, Leorio is a great comedy relief character but of course he still hasshare of his dramatic moments which he has nailed so far in the few episodes that have aired on Toonami so far.

He also does a pretty good Captain America too, voice matching Roger Craig Smith as well.

He's also excellent as McCree in Overwatch, and his voice for Bigfoot, wow just wow now that's some real playing against type and range too.

Seriously Matthew Mercer just continues to impress me with each new role of his. He's definitely one of the best more recent talents of the past few years for sure.

Happy Birthday Matthew Mercer!

@VGAfanatic Nah, I think they made the right choice going with Robin. Chrom's just another swordsman. With both Marth and Ike already present, he wouldn't have brought anything new to the roster--whereas Robin's limited-use magic spells represent a prominent aspect of the Fire Emblem series that hadn't been touched till that point.

(Before Lucina is brought up, she was intended to simply be an alternate skin for Marth and was given her own slot as a clone to pad out the roster at the last minute)

Happy Belated Birthday to Matthew Mercer. One of my all time favorite voice actors!!!! His performances as Stryker and Leon impressed me, but it was his role as Chrom that solidified him as one of my favorites. He brought the right amount of authority (not to mention Chrom was a BAD ASS) and emotion to the role. He also worked for the games more comedic moments. Granted there isn't much dialogue there, but his "HUH" tends to me smile. I also love him as Kiritsugu Emiya, Bayman, Alvin, Walter, Melvin Voyager / Atlas, Tony Stark/Iron Man, and Levi among others.

Happy Birthday Matt Mercer! Very fantastic and yet remarkable work as Chrom, Kanji, Rihan Nura, Kiritsugu Emiya, Fei Long, Leon, Kuroh and Simbad.

I'm quite impressed with his roles as Melvin Voyager and Levi. I wish you the best of luck as Jotaro.

Happy Birthday Matthew Mercer. One of the coolest voice actors in the industry. His voice as Chrom was heroic, Levi was a total BA, Alvin was comical, Kiritsugu was cold and stern, Tony Stark was awesome, Tygra was smug, Kuroh was serious, and the rest are absolutely amazing. Happy B-Day Matthew Mercer!

Mercer tells a story when Patrick Seitz (voice director for Fire Emblem Awakening) intentionally made things awkward. Whilst Matt was reading through the script he reaches to Chrom's confession line, "wind at my back and the sword at my side". Patrick Seitz directed Matt to not break eye contact with him whilst performing the line. Mercer did perform the line feeling dirty afterwards. As for Seitz, he was grinning the whole time.

@akersaotome Didn't even know Patrick Seitz did the directing in that game! No wonder I loved the english voices so much!

Wondering if he asked EVERY voice actor to do the same lol.

Mercer tells a story when he was cast as Reapmon from Digimon Fusion. He had to double check the name with Mary Elizabeth McGlynn. He then blew a sigh of relief.

From playing the snarky Tigra; to action hero Leon Kennedy; to billionaire playboy as Tony Stark; to father of the year Kiritsugu Emiya and now cast as the diminutive centre parted bowl haircut from the 90's, Levi; things are looking good for Dungeon master Mercer.

Matt Mercer tells a funny story about a line that was not included for Fist of the North Star: Ken's Rage, where her played as Rei. The producer for the english audio didn't do a pre-read of the script before recording. As Mercer was recording, this particular line that was translated to English read: "There's no way you can stop me from putting my fingers inside of you!"

If that line was included in the final product, I would buy that game in an instant.

It's pretty crazy to listen to his voice get so deep, masculine and growly, seeing how all I knew him for before joining the site was Kai from AKIRA.

@PsychicVoiceSpy No doubt. Mercer has proven to be a very versatile actor. Check out his work on stuff like Warcraft, Dead or Alive, Dynasty Warriors and Persona. The versatility really does show.

this guy sounds like he should be at funimation. I mean he's great in many video games and anime from LA, but with his voice he can definitely interact well with voice actors like josh grille, brina Palencia, trina nishimura, john swasey, kent Williams, Stephanie young, mike mcfraland, colleen clinkenbeard, Jason liebrecht, david trosko(the two also sound alike), Brittany karbowski, leah clark, chuck Huber, grant james, joel McDonald, eric vale, greg ayres, Austin tindle, chris bevins and chris sabat

If he were to appear on more Funimation titles, other than Mike McFarland, which voice director would wants to get their paws on him? How many would pounce on him using gifts or food?

The names you listed could interact with Mercer, ideally in a prelay recording environment.

@akersaotome I was told by someone that it's mike's job to hire voic eactors outside of texas. but if anyone other than mike wants to use him, I guess either Zach Bolton, colleen clinkenbeard, joel McDonald, or tyler walker would want him. heck, he would probably make a great marco, caeser, or merman prince

@spider-batmanx12

Funimation must have alot of faith in Mike McFarland in hire actors outside the state of Texas. I heard when Chris Smith was at Funimation, he worked with other voice directors to maximize his time in Texas. Same can apply to Mercer if the opportunity presents itself.

@akersaotome chris' voice does scream funimation and i hope he comes back on and off again like patrick seitz or carrie savage. if he mostly comes back in funimation, it might be in the same position as carrie. i hope other people will hire matthew. heck, since laura bailey and kyle hebert are working on dragon ball z kai, i hope they can mostly appear this 2014. i expect her to be in attack on titan, hataraku no maou sama, psycho pass, one piece, and other stuff licensed by funimation including kyle. i also hope they interact with the newbies like josh grelle, joel mcdonald, jad saxton, morgan garret, newton pittman, scott freeman, bryan massey, and brad hawkins. i always am a big fan of big times meeting with the newbies. heck, i believe the interacting between josh grelle and laura bailey would pull off extremely well. heck, if troy baker and matthew mercer ever come to texas and interact with david trosko, they might do some kind of duet or talk to eachother to confuse the audiance who is who.

@spider-batmanx12

Can't call Josh Grelle a newbie since he's been voice acting during the ADV days. I like Grelle aswell, as I believe his talent should be in L.A. Also I wouldn't call most of the names you listed as newbies.

Back to Mercer, I think he'd make a good Erwin Smith from Attack on Titan.

@akersaotome well my Definition of newbies aren't a bad thing. It's just new voice actors interacting with old ones.

I first heard him in Mortal Kombat 9, then he came to my attention again in Resident Evil 6. However, it wasn't until Fire Emblem Awakening when I truly started to love him. I'm not saying his other roles were bad, but his performance as Chrom was one of my favorites in the game. It makes me want to get into voice acting.

Out of curiousity, is he union or non-union? I've noticed he works for AVO Talent, which is a union company, and yet he has worked with Troy Baker and Laura Bailey on a number on a number of occasions. He even filled in for Troy as Kanji. Is there some kind of expection there? Am I missing something? I'm pretty curious about this.

@DravenRoth994 Granted, this comment is insanely old, but Matthew Mercer very openly acknowledges much of his work which is non-union as such.

He's obviously able to do both legally & openly.

Though neither I nor he will confirm "financial core" union, or non-union.

I dunno if an agency itself can be "union-only"

I was mighty impressed with his performance as he stole the show in the Fullmetal Alchemist: The Sacred Star of Milos as Melvin Voyager.

Now he's landed the role of Emiya Kiritsugu in Fate Zero, it wouldn't surprise me if there's a huge of amount of expectation for him to nail the part.

According to Sam Riegel and Liam O'Brien's third episode of the podcast All work no play, Matthew is a great dungeon master for Dungeons and Dragons.

Other than Fei-Long, Matt said he would have liked to have voiced Dan Hibiki. His Tygra performance for the new Thundercats is awesome, as he likes the snarky characters.
