For someone who (unfortunately) has been cast as almost exclusively Asian characters, I really wish she might do some anime...sigh..

I've been on this site for exactly 6 months now (actually, even longer before I made this account), and I only just NOW realized that this is the same Lauren Tom who played Julie from Friends.

Talk about a pretty effective mindblow.

Didn't she play Supergirl in a couple of episodes of Superman: The Animated Series?

At least she doesn't have all Asian characters. She got to do people like Gizmo and Jinx. I think that's awesome.

I don't know why Tom is almost always cast as Asian (including non-Chinese) characters. She has more range than that. I wish casting directors would look past her race when casting her.

@PurpleWarrior13 I'm willing to chalk it up to a misguided pursuit of political correctness by white liberal casting directors who seem to forget or disregard the voice actor's ability to be people or characters other than themselves.

@CatsTuxedo I get the though process, but white liberals would actually go the opposite direction. They would have her playing everything, but an Asian character to try and prove they see past race. A conservative casting director would cast her the way she has been, to try and keep the status quo. In their minds it's just easier that way. P.S. it's not.

@Powersurge I'll attempt to steer this conversation away from politics and clarify that I'm under the impression that modern casting directors suffer from white guilt and harbor an irrational fear of somehow recreating Breakfast at Tiffany's if they cast any white actor as an Asian character, no matter how well the actor might do at the job. I didn't say "any non-Asian actor" because Phil LaMarr played Samurai Jack without any resulting uproar, such is the double standards surrounding racial minority actors in the States.

@CatsTuxedo Again I see what your getting at but, you clearly don't understand. The thought process behind "white guilt", is a simple one. If you're a casting director and you are white and are feeling "white guilt" and believe your self to be liberal, how would casting people as their actually race or ethnicity be "white guilt". Remember you said they were liberal. A liberal of any kind will claim not to see race. Which in a lot of cases causes them to look at racial stereotypes and just straight go the opposite direction. Which is not the best way to go, example all black men can jump is the stereotype. So they go the opposite direction no black man can jump see how that doesn't work. Example a black woman from the U.S. doesn't do an Australian accent correctly for whatever reason therefore she doesn't get the part, if you have any other person who can pull it off better you natural will go with that person, but not a liberal director they will try and work with the black woman as to not offend them. get it. That's "white guilt". Which doesn't actually happen all that much hoped this helps. Now that we have "white guilt" figured out lol. Let's address why there was a backlash with the Breakfast at Tiffany's and no backlash with Phil LaMarr playing samural jack. Breakfast at Tiffany's portrayed negative stereotypes of Asians which is what the controversy was over not someone playing a character who was not their race. Which is why there is no controversy for Phil LaMarr because he didn't portray a negative stereotype of Asians. But the topping on the cake is Breakfast at Tiffany's is live action, and Samurai Jack was animation. Question for you what's the different from a southern black man's voice and a southern white man's voice? Nothing they both will have a country accent. If you can't see the person you can't tell what race they are just what region their from. That doesn't mean they want go look that character up, but nine times out of ten you won't know from just listening.

@NCZ The conversation was started by someone bringing up the fact that Tom is very frequently stuck voicing Asian characters in spite of the issue of race ideally being irrelevant in the voice-acting industry, so the subject's at least somewhat relevant :/
