Happy Birthday Johnny Yong Bosch!!

Easily one of the finest voice actors in Los Angeles as he can voice so many different characters from Heroes, to young boys, even villains.

My Top Ten voice over roles from him are:

1. Ichigo Kurosaki (Bleach)
2. Izaya Orihara (Durarara!!)
3. Vash the Stampede (Trigun)
4. Yukio Okumura (Blue Exorcist)
5. Sasori (Naruto)
6. Lelouch Lamperouge (Code Geass)
7. Itsuki Koizumi (The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya)
8. Yusaku Kitamura (Toradora)
9. Artemis (Sailor Moon)
10. Rossiu (Gurren Lagann)

I wouldn't be surprised if he shows up in Hunter x Hunter voicing either Chrollo Lucilfer or someone else once they start with the Phantom Troupe arc.

Never commented on this before, so I'll give it a go.

This guy is a little bit like the Nicolas Cage of dubs, he's certainly not bad at all but a lot of people see his plethora of main roles & give him probably a little too much flack for that. FWIH, he doesnt have a *ton* of range, but it's pretty decent & I think his acting is fine, even quite good for long-running characters.

I've begun to watch Code Geass long after I missed that boat when it was airing, & I think his performance is really good. It's a little bit like his work in Durarara, which I really like as well. I grew up watching Haruhi as well, & I think his performance was really slick there as well (no idea it was him, actually, & I thought he sounded like Kyon too which is impressive). Similarly, his Sasori sounded creepy & also youthful. I also really enjoyed his Vash the Stampede, & I had no idea he was Rossiu in Gurren Lagann.

I've not seen Power Rangers 1994, but it's interesting how he moved up from that, working at Saban...back to Saban later on. Only seen a bit of DC Super Heroes, but his Robin is really good, & I can't help but wonder how well he'd do with more serious material. His Iron Fist from Marvel Heroes sounds really good, too, just from clips on this site. It really does help that he's a martial artist IRL.

I saw Akira & Persona 4 in Japanese, but from what I saw of the dubs, I especially like his Adachi. Pretty gloriously "pathetic villain" that he excels at. I'll get around to all the games he's been in, as well as Eureka 7 & his part in Sailor Moon, at some point, I'm sure. & I do hope that, at *some* point, he's in Dragon Ball Super, even just the Bang Zoom dub. He's been in damn near everything dubbed, & it'd be a shame if he wasnt in DB material.

Last but not least, I have pretty heavy nostalgia for his Ichigo. I think the Bleach dub is quite good, though I've gotten to appreciate the JP version at some point as well. I like that his performance, unlike some of the dubs I have nostalgia for, is pretty accurate to the original & pretty reflective of that character. All in all, this guy has highs & lows, certainly dubs need more VAs, but JYB is definitely not a bad one to have around.

On the other hand this has been his busiest year in recent times on the anime front. You take one, you lose one, I guess.
said at 12:51 AM on Sun Oct 30 2016
@nikipotamus I don't think this site has updated all his info for this year. In terms of anime I know he's in Ajin,Danganranpa 3, Cyborg 009 vs Devil man,and some original animation. He was in naruto storm 4,and some new YoKai Watch game. He could be working on devil may cry 5. That may be the main reason why he's not in many video games this year, like he usually is.

@DeathGod46 Grey & Eric are outstanding, & I would LOVE to hear them more in anime dubs, if the money was sufficient. That's not simply "oh, big-name VA's, yay" (there's plenty of rich VA's with one-voice syndrome), but a real appreciation of their massive range & real talent in bringing out characters.

One of the greatest VAs of all time. I know he annoys a lot of people, but it's cool. I don't care if everyone in a show was voiced by JYB. I'd probably still love it.

Overused? Hardly. 16 years and he has WAY less roles than less-experienced VAs like Stephanie Sheh and Monica Rial. He's UNDERUSED.
said at 8:24 PM on Wed Aug 10 2016
@AntiSabat666 Well,Monica Rial is with Funimation, and they license most of the anime in the US. I'm pretty sure most funimation voice actors are non-union. Yeha,Johnny should be in more dubs. I personally thought he should've voiced the main protagonist of Charlotte.

Its great that he is in a lot of stuff.
My favorite roles are Renton, Leluouch, Vash,Artemus and Takayangi(Tenjho Tenge)
There is a lot of other roles in Anime and Games he is great as
said at 10:41 PM on Mon Sep 5 2016
@Troodon2 I like about as much anime as I do American cartoons. US stuff has more money, & that lends it a considerable amount in presentation, but it isn't inherently better from a story standpoint JUST because the animation is better.

The stories that Japan can produce are generally able to be more mature than what I've seen from US stuff.

While I'm glad that shows like Steven Universe & BTAS exist...for everyone of those, there's a Pig Goat Banana Cricket.

* I may not love everything out of Japan, but I've *NEVER* seen an American show comparable to Ghost in the Shell.

* I wish more anime like Golgo 13, Master Keaton, & heck, Space Dandy were created with TV simuldubs planned, too.
said at 10:48 PM on Mon Sep 5 2016
@huzaifa_ahmed Well, perhaps sooner or later we may well have a PG-13 animated scifi drama similar to GITS or Cowboy Bebop that doesn't just rely on shock and crass. I've had several ideas in mind to pitch.

although I'm fairly certain Japan had it's own PGBC analogies, or general projects just not compatible to people's taste.
said at 12:37 PM on Tue Sep 6 2016
@Troodon2 My problem isn't necessarily with Hollywood not taking animation seriously - I'd love something mature & nuanced to come out of Hollywood animation.

My issue is "Why does the question even have to go that far?" * Why can't we accept good content, just because it's from another country? *

Why make that exception? "Oh, Avatar & Ben10 is great, but screw Naruto & Bleach" it's kind of pointless unnecessary & frankly I wouldn't say that there isn't any xenophobia involved. * I do think that's a part of it.

(On top of, yes, *probably* some serious issues with unnecessarily sexual moments, & in general a ton of mediocre/low-quality content.)
said at 8:52 PM on Tue Sep 6 2016
@huzaifa_ahmed Well, either way I have nothing against Anime. I actually do like certain franchises like DG, Ghost, Fairy Tail, and others. I'm just don't watch a lot of it.

That's what I talked about before, that while I do like anime, I don't watch a lot of it and wish to hear JYB in more original work since he is a good VA overall.
said at 1:48 AM on Wed Sep 7 2016
@Troodon2 DG? & generally I hear that Fairy Tail isn't very good (next to the other "big 4", ie Naruto/Bleach/One Piece). Though I havent seen/read it so Idk wtf im talkin abt.

But overall, I dont disagree w/you. I don't watch everything, myself.

Can someone explain to me what a Union and Non Union voice actor is?
NCZ (Admin)
said at 2:33 PM on Fri Jun 24 2016

It's a business matter.

Labour unions exist for various jobs in order to ensure stable conditions for workers. There are actors' unions in many parts of the world, such as SAG-AFTRA in California, Equity in the UK, or ACTRA in Canada. Generally speaking, if you're an actor, you're going to want to be a union member unless you want to take low-paying, obscure, or independent gigs forever.

If producers of media want to hire actors, voiceover or otherwise, then they either have to negotiate with and seek approval of the relevant union, or work outside of it. Usually it's against the rules for members of a union to perform work not authorized by the union (i.e. non-union). You can get kicked out if you're caught, so most people don't take the risk. In voiceover, some union members are sneaky and do so anyway, but uncredited or under a pseudonym, as a way to sneak around it.

Then there's financial core, which allows you to freely work on any project regardless of union status without any repercussions - but this requires you to technically leave the union while still having to pay union fees.

There's a lot of muddled information floating around there about unions nowadays, sadly. Probably doesn't help that it's a hard thing to describe in layman's terms. It's like a big game of telephone, really. So that's why I always recommend that people be careful when talking about it, if at all. Also because speculating about an actor's union status can be harmful to the actor.
said at 11:33 AM on Sat Jun 25 2016
@NCZ Is Johnny union? Since I know most anime are non union, but he seems to be in some union stuff.
NCZ (Admin)
said at 11:40 AM on Sat Jun 25 2016
@DeathGod46 Like I said. Speculating about actors' union status can be harmful and misleading, and it's not really our business to ponder about.

I am really curious, does anyone know what makes Lelouch his best role. I want to know cuz I am making a project and want the vocal performances to top each voice actors chart. Like is it due to complexity of character, the way the voice fits the image, or is it something else? Someone please tell me, I would LOVE (no sarcasm, I am legit serious) your thoughts.
said at 9:05 PM on Sat May 14 2016
@4xNicholas Maybe that it's a drastic departure from Bosch's usual mold (idealistic heroes). Lelouch here is a rather cynical anti-hero.

Finished JoJo's. Solid performance as always, hitting all the necessary emotional beats and nailing Jonathan's chivalrous nature. If I had to nitpick, I'd say he had a harder time maintaining the accent then say, Patrick Seitz or Ben Diskin, but it wasn't inconsistent enough for me to consider it a deal-breaker, and he really came through in the end.

What can I say about this man that hasn't been said before? He is a legend. So many fantastic performances. Ichigo, Narukami, Jonathan, and my favorite of them all, Lelouch. Dear God, that performance. Calling his Lelouch Oscar worthy would be an understatement. So much indescribable passion, force, inspiration and power. Truly one of the greatest performances I have ever seen. VO or otherwise. He may reuse his voices a bit, but IMO, it doesn't matter. He always succeeds at portraying his character and putting every bit of his heart and soul into it. God bless this man. His acting will always be timeless. He has earned every bit of praise he has recieved and more.

Happy Birthday Johnny Yong Bosch.

He may not have the absolute greatest vocal range but he has such a amazing acting range able to go from voicing heroes like Ichigo Kurosaki, Vash the Stampede, Renton Thurston and Bumblebee to nice guys like Yusaku Kitamura, Yukio Okumura and Artemis as well as morally ambiguous characters like Rossiu and Braz D. Blood but IMO he truly excels when he plays delightfully wicked villains like Izaya Orihara, Ryunosuke Uryu, Claire Leonelli and especially as Lelouch Vi Britannia my favourite role of his.
said at 5:22 AM on Wed Jan 6 2016
and since his birthday last year I've heard him as Itsuki Koizumi, Albert Morcerf, Titus Alexius, Shinjiro Nagita, Lujon, Johnny, and Iron Fist and I thought he was excellent as all of those characters.

His Jonathan Joestar was a mixed bag however, not completely horrible but not great, I still feel he could have been far more fitting as so many other characters in the franchise.

and now he'll be voicing Orga Itsuka, which isn't his usual type of role to play, Orga has a really deep voice in the Japanese version, I hope he'll try something far deeper and get to really show off his range here. This is a make or break casting, it could either be the best playing against type role casting in a long time or it will end up sounding awkward and be the weakest link of the dub.

I hope it turns out well personally, I want him to succeed.

Anyways Happy Birthday Johnny Yong Bosch!

They need to add in the role he played as the Black Power Ranger in Mighty Morphan Power Rangers even though it wasn't a cartoon he still played in it and that was one of his major rolls and what started his acting career
said at 12:00 PM on Mon Dec 16 2013
@dilanar Technically, it could be counted as a "voice-over role". When he's in his Power Rangers suit, his lines are most likely dubbed over the parts where he is in the suit due to the mask most likely muffling his voice, which would require him to record them. If that's the case, then technically, it counts as a VA role. :)
NCZ (Admin)
said at 12:40 PM on Mon Dec 16 2013
@dilanar The entire point of this site is that it's a voice acting site. We're not adding any live-action non-voiceover roles, ever.
said at 12:29 AM on Mon Jan 6 2014
@NCZ They're not REALLY in the suits, they're dubbing to the suit actors head movements. So, it DOES count technically.

Are there any roles where Johnny Yong Bosch does accents. I have a feeling that 90% of the time, they usually ask him to use the same voice in his anime roles (and sometimes asking him to use a higher pitch voice in a few other roles). However, I don't think he ever does accents across from his role as Kurosawa in Binary Domain (he does a Japanese accent, but it's easily recognizable).

If Dog Days anime gets a dub, I would like to hear him voice Cinque Izumi with a British accent. Or better yet, get him to voice a sylvari character in Guild Wars 2 (the sylvari speak with British accents).

Dark Paladin X
said at 9:20 AM on Wed Aug 21 2013
@Troodon2 That would a little difficult. Most western animated cartoons are union-only and they rarely hire fi-core members nor are they non-union. Johnny Yong Bosch is often associated with anime, which is non-union; and most western animated cartoons are usually quite reluctant to hire anime voice actors due to union concerns with few rare exceptions (Troy Baker and Laura Bailey normally work in anime, but they have been getting western animated cartoons more and more often).
said at 6:50 PM on Tue Aug 27 2013

I don't if this counts as "western animation" but the Nicktoons cartoon called Three Delivery that was broadcast in 2008-2009. Both he and Stephanie Sheh star in that series. That could have been recorded as a prelay.
said at 3:29 PM on Wed Oct 30 2013
@Dark Paladin X IS that why Richard Epcar isn't in Western Animation?
said at 11:36 PM on Mon Aug 29 2016
@Troodon2 Nah, @Dark Paladin X is kinda exaggerating.

Troy, Laura & Travis, yes, they worked they way up through PCB & Studiopolis, originally thru non-union dub productions.

But it isn't as if people like Max Mittelman, DC Douglas, & Isaac C Singleton, who all clearly take non-union work still..aren't in any animation jobs.

Though, frankly, it IS true that plenty of casting directors dislike people who are financial core, because that means they lower the value of the union's bargaining.

Financial core means that you can accept the pay granted by union contracts, without being bound by the code of "don't work outside union contracts".

The union bargains with employers for better wages & conditions - together, what we say *matters*; alone, there isn't much we can say to a corporation.

It's kinda treacherous, if you're good enough to book union project auditions, to lower the value of what actors bargain for *together*...& take non-union contracts.

* & most of those actors are fi-core BECAUSE they have issues booking auditions.

* Anime dubs simply hire people with no bargaining power (thus elevating the visibility of people who'd probably otherwise go unnoticed - see Troy Baker's lack of popularity before The Last of Us), so that they don't have to pay them crap. A lot of people see Hollywood as some magical place for get-rich-quick schemes, & Japanese companies I imagine are no exception.

How low can he pitch his voice? I don't remember him going any lower than Lelouch.
I wish Johnny got to explore his vocal range a little more. Roles like Renton, Claus and Emil are part of the reason why I like him. And while a lot of roles require him to chew the scenery, I think he's perfectly capable of delivering subtle, nuanced performances if directed to do so. Claus, Lelouch- when he's not being melodramatic- and Kiba are fine examples of this.

said at 9:22 AM on Wed Aug 21 2013
@nikipotamus The hot-bloodness and hammy performances of Johnny Yong Bosch is the main reason why I enjoy his roles :). Although he is capable of doing high-pitch voices, I wish he can explore doing accents in his future voice acting roles since 90% of the time, they usually ask him to use the same voice over and over again (Of course, since anime is ADR voice work, there is usually less creativity involved).

@VanOsdel 0123 I think it's more that they work for Viz Media and thus are in a lot of things together.
Like how Collen Clinkbeard and Chirst Sabat are in a lot of stuff together but they'er not together
said at 3:28 AM on Sat Nov 26 2011
@Music Meister Viz doesn't own a dubbing studio. They outsource their dubs to other studios (like Studiopolis and Bang! Zoom! in California, Ocean Studios in Vancouver Canada, and Blue Water Studios in Vancouver, Canada). No voice actor "works" for Viz. Johnny and Stephanie are both based in California and occasionally work in Dallas. Colleen and Chris are often cast together because they're both Dallas-based voice actors. No voice actor is contracted at specific studios. They work at the various studios around where they live. Make sense?
said at 9:45 PM on Fri Jul 26 2013
Actually, Blue Water Studios is in Calgary, although Viz (among other anime/manga dub companies) do outsource their English dubs there. It's not uncommon for voice actors to relocate to other regions to find more work.
said at 10:29 PM on Sat Jul 27 2013
@pokemastanumba1 Yeah I know. I'm pretty sure that was a typo! XD

They don't share a talent pool, but there have been a couple dubs that use BOTH, and there are some decent voice actors in Calgary (like Carol Anne Day, Matthew Erickson, Roger Rhodes, Dave Pettit, etc).
