"Anakin, if one is to understand the great mystery, one must study all its aspects, not just the dogmatic narrow view of the Jedi. If you wish to become a complete and wise leader, you must embrace...a larger view of the Force. Be careful of the Jedi, Anakin. Only through me can you achieve a power greater than any Jedi! Learn to know the dark side of the Force, and you will be able to save your wife from Certain Death."

Saw what Ian brought to Palpatine in Rebels, he's still got it. The man perfectly encapsulated the danger and pure evil that Palpatine is, even after nearly 40 years since ROTJ. He's got my vote once he's in the VC.

Great to see him FINALLY perform the role in any form of animation! Here's hoping video games are next!

On that note... I want to see him do something outside of Star Wars. I want to see him in an Assassin's game or a Final Fantasy game or something... OR a Ghibli film!

Rebels has a lot of 'filler' episodes but whenever they bring in notable characters (and their live action actor) it's always worth watching. Probably wishful thinking but maybe this will lead to more voice over opportunities (assuming he's interested).

He still sounds good here (which was a little more than 4 years ago)

I don't usually take youtube comments seriously but one person said that because The Clone Wars was funded out of Lucas's own pocket he didn't want to pay more for talent which would explain why none of the prequel trilogy live-action cast returned except a few of them for the Movie which launched the series.

But now that Disney has deeper pockets they don't mind paying large sums for reprisals (which is why they're usually only guest spots), though we probably can't dismiss the idea that several cast members would not want to commit to a lower paying voice acting gig for several years and prioritize their availability for it over higher paying on-camera work.

Even before the rise of Prequel Memes popularity most fans would probably agree he had some of the best scenes and acting in that trilogy (and ROTJ)

And yeah he does have some of the best quotes!

I remember reading that he said he doesn't want anyone else to play the Emperor if the character is brought back in a future film (maybe Disney will adapt the Vader comics one day)

Cool that he at least reprises the role for Rebels.

Maybe Episode 9 will have this in a flashback?

Did you ever hear the tragedy of Darth Plagueis The Wise? I thought not. It’s not a story the Jedi would tell you. It’s a Sith legend. Darth Plagueis was a Dark Lord of the Sith, so powerful and so wise he could use the Force to influence the midichlorians to create life… He had such a knowledge of the dark side that he could even keep the ones he cared about from dying. The dark side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural. He became so powerful… the only thing he was afraid of was losing his power, which eventually, of course, he did. Unfortunately, he taught his apprentice everything he knew, then his apprentice killed him in his sleep. Ironic. He could save others from death, but not himself.

First he played an old man when he was in his 30s. Over twenty years later, he was just the right age to play him as a younger man. And now, he revisits the roots of a character befitting his true age.

The circle is now complete.

@Shaun Ince You kidding? The fact that he was able to reprise his role in the prequels and fit perfectly with his age is one of the things I loved most about them, production-wise.
JPN_Seiyuu_Fanboy

@immblueversion

Playing him convincingly as an old man when he was only in his 30s is often overlooked and quite impressive. If Dark Empire was adapted before the now canon sequel trilogy he possibly could've played his younger self again as well thanks to digitally de-aging VFX.

Who else is hyped that we finally get to see him play Palpatine again? Granted it's not live action but it's still such a treat and I'm hyped. Not to mention it's also a good sign that the actors from the prequels are willing to return for the Disney spin offs (cough cough BRING EWAN MCGREGOR BACK FOR OBI WAN cough cough).

@skeletonking1234

I hope he sounds good. For example James Earl Jones was still great as Vader in Rogue One but you could definitely tell he sounded older. Ian as someone else mentioned is now closer to the character's age in the timeline of Rebels so I guess it won't be as much of an issue even he's not identical sounding as he was in Revenge of the Sith/Empire Strikes Back (Special Edition) or Return of the Jedi.

My main concern is if the voice director overdirects him or something like unnecessary sound effects/filter/layering. Live Action to Voice Acting reprisals aren't always successful.

@JF1991 I'm very curious on who was the voice director for both Rebels and "The Clone Wars", cause initially I thought it was David Filoni who did the voice direction for both shows, but it doesn't look to be the case. :/
