Happy birthday Brian Drummond the Canadian Steve Blum

He is among Vancouver's finest and most seasoned VAs, no contest. He has such an extensive range, going from cyre young boys, to prideful villains, to deep sounding and scary monsters, and an extensive amount of experience to back it up.

His two star roles, are, without a doubt, Vegeta and Ryuk. Brian captures the arrogance and pride that emanates from him near-flawlessly. He did, after all, originate the "IT'S OVER 9000" meme. That's not to say Chris Sabat's performance was any less better. He stll did a pretty good Vegeta. Sadly, however, like with the rest of the Vancouver dub, his performanxe began to decline. Once the Ocean dub of DBZ Kai comes out (come on, [as], finish up that broadcast), I can't wait for him to become golden as him once again.
For a fun fact, if Mahoromatic and Fate series were done in Vancouver, he would make a pretty good Toh Ryuuga and Gilgamesh, respectively; the former being a foil to Mahoro and also a prideful warrior from the antagonists who later on joins the heroes, and the latter being an insane egomaniac. In fact, Drummond would make an even better fit for him than what Grant George and David Vincent could have ever done.

For Ryuk, Drummond adds more layers to him and makes a much more fitting perfomance for him than the JP VA's take, playing up his creepy, terrifying, and dissonant nature.

His performance as Wolverine would eventually make him his third star role, sounding almost like Steve Blum's take. If Marvel brings more productions to Vancouver, I would love to see him get more shots as him.

He's had so many roles that listing every noteworthy role from him would make this entry one heck of a doorstopper but I can nail down some notable roles: Benny, Jetfire, Heero Yuy, Milliardo Peacecraft, Kurt Wylde, Yajirobe, Knuckles, Blurr, Hayato Shingu, Joyce B. Moreno, Saito, Allen Schezar, Merihim/Shiro, Venom, Crimson Dynamo, Jimothy Cuberge, Fujitaka Kinomoto, Yasushi Takagi, Renkotsu, Kageromaru, Venom and many, many more.

Happy Birthday, Brian "OVER 9,000" Drummond! In spite of how dated and overused that meme ended up being later on, there was a reason that mistranslated line became popular when it did - and Drummond's delivery as Vegeta, Prince of All Saiyans was the icing on the cake there. The VA worked really well for the character when he was a smug villain. Not only does Drummond possess a wide range, he's also one of those voice actors where there's just no pigeonholing him. Aside from his Vegeta earlier on in DBZ, my other favorite Brian Drummond roles include Jumpy Ghostface, HighRoller, Ryuk, Streaky, Wolverine/Logan, and Jack Cisco.

The perfect and definitive Ryuk, and even though he's not my favorite, you have to love how smugly he voiced Vegeta.

Happy Birthday Brian Drummond!

He is without a doubt my all-time favourite VA currently based in Vancouver. The range and the many kinds of characters he has played over the last twenty years is nothing short of amazing.

Ryuk from Death Note is by far his finest performance to date and my favourite character of his. He had added so much more to the role, giving him a far more fitting gruff, creepy and even scarier sounding voice than the Japanese voice. I love how he performed his more humorous moments from especially his obsession with apples.

However its not my only favorite of his, there is also his work as Vegeta in Oceans dub of DBZ. I loved the intensity and energy he put in to the role. He nailed all of The Prince of All Saiyans angry fits of rages at the beginning of the series especially when he started off as a villain. Its OVER 9000! Is without a doubt one of my all-time favourite moments in anime history and to this date only Brian does this perfectly. I mean do not get me wrong Christopher Sabat is a pretty great Vegeta himself but he has never pulled off Over 9000 as well as Brian does. Unfortunately as the Ocean dub went on his performance started to deteriorate a bit which is a shame since he started off amazingly. I am hoping with Oceans dub of Kai if it ever does come out, he will truly shine in the role once again.

I also loved his other performances including Wolverine, Jetstorm, Jetfire, Jolt, Blurr, Shockblast, Zechs Marquisse, Hayato Shingu, Allen Schezar, Benny, Wentzel Ahbe, Renkotsu, Kageromaru, Juromaru, Shiro/Merihim, Streaky, Keo, Venom, Yamu and his many other roles on shows like My Little Pony, Megaman NT Warrior, Gundam 00 and well just about everything else. Its pretty amazing that Brian can play the some of the scariest and most evil characters in some shows and then play really cartoony and even cute characters in others. Truly he is one of the all-time greats.

It's great that he's been given more opportunities to voice Wolverine in numerous Marvel Knights motion comics, the more I hear him as Logan, the more badass he sounds. He's definitely tied with Steve Blum as my favourite Wolverine. I hope he gets a chance to voice Wolverine in a cartoon down the line, much like Steve has done numerous times.

Then there's his work in The Inhumans motion That is some of Brian's best work right there. He is absolutely amazing as Maximus, he really pulls off the power mad monarch perfectly, and his performance was glorious hammy and over the top. Him playing Gorgon was a nice change of pace for him, playing Gorgon who usually tends to have a deep voice with a lighter and gruffer sounding voice, at first it's a bit strange for the character but he really gives Gorgon a personality, that throaty voice and that laugh really sold me on the character and performance. He was very fun in the role. Lockjaw is also another great example of his range, almost sounding like he could potentially work as Scooby-Doo some day.

It was a bit weird but still interesting hearing him as Iron Fist and Mr. Fantastic and they didn't have that major of a role in the comics they were in but he got the job done and it fit the context they were in.

I also thought it was cool they got him to voice match another Steve Blum role, Zeb Orrelios in Lego Star Wars: Droid Tales. He absolutely nailed him despite the limited material he had to work with. I do hope he and the other Ocean VA's that voice matched the Star Wars Rebels VA's get another shot in a future Lego Star Wars series. Brian was fantastic much like Steve is in the role.

His performances in the show Dinotrux were excellent, once again he gets to show off his range quite nicely.

and while he didn't get to reprise Ryuk for the live-action Death Note series, it was very nice of him to give Willem Dafoe his blessing and his approval on taking over the role, and yes Willem is an awesome choice for Ryuk, realistically I would vote for Brian in the inevitable voice compare.

Now if only we could finally get to hear his Vegeta in the Ocean dub of DBZ Kai, almost 5 to 6 years.....Still Waiting!!!!

Anyways Happy Birthday Brian Drummond, one of my all-time favourite Ocean VA's.

I think they would have done so when they were originally asked if for no other reason then to stop that rumor cold. After all, they know better than any of us.
