So he's number one this week? I'm guessing it's because of the live action movie. Well, at least it introduced new people to the show.

I think the director aren't giving Brad enough credit. During the scenes in Ratchet & Clank he showed a new side to his voice (at least to me) which proved that he has a great range. Such a shame that the directors are barely giving him any opportunity.

I too would love to see Brad in more Anime, but I guess it's not likely since there are so many companies in America handling dubs. I would also just like to see him in more stuff period . I heard he had a minor role in the ratchet and Clank movie
said at 10:27 PM on Mon Sep 5 2016
@Darkness Dragon It's always been US companies that outsourced to Canada.

Canada is apparently just too expensive for them ATM, due to the downfall of TV anime & rise of subtitled-only Internet streaming (&, majorly, piracy, due to business incompetence + cultural appropriation of foreign media).

* As well as Hollywood preferring to make anime-style US shows (more profitable for them) rather than license anime.

Hopefully, though, with CR (who holds a good bulk of legal anime viewership) using Vancouver for their Gintama dub, this may change.
said at 10:35 PM on Mon Sep 5 2016
@Darkness Dragon By the way, Canada is more expensive for anime (about 2-3x typical low-end LA dubbing), because they have a TV quota for domestic entertainment...basically because Vancouver's a lot smaller than Hollywood, & the quota is a protectionist measure.

* Because there's more of a guarantee to air, the union can maintain higher wages.

The current LA wage is $64.25/hr, for Vancouver it's $178+ (or 416 for a 4-hour).

It's chump change compared to Hollywood cartoons, tho, $889/4-hour 1-episode session, & in Vancouver it's about half that.

Happy birthday Brad Swaile, the English Mamoru Miyano and Canadian Johnny Yong Bosch!

While he may not have the most flexible of vocal ranges, particuarly compared to the likes of the Dobson brothers, Brian Drummond, Peter New, Andrea Libman (yes she does show range oitside of her usual voice, thanks to MLP: FIM no less), Kathleen Barr, Don Brown, Venus Terzo, Andrew Francis, Colin Murdock, Tabitha St. Germain, Lee Tockar, Scott McNeil and Samuel Vincent, Brad's got good enough performances to make up for that (I would live to see him flex up his range though). He is also among Vancouver's most notable VAs (I would love for him to have a twitter account since many of the other Vancouver VAs do)

Although he has been acting since his late teens, his first true breakout role was Death Note's Light Yagami in 2007. At the same time it was a departure from his usual mold that was the idealistic yet whiny character. He truly fits the righteous knight templar character who uses the powers of the Death Note to kill the evils of the world, only to descend into delusion and let his ego take over him and declare himself as the God of the new world and begin killing anyone who opposes him left and right (a true example of how dangerous a Caligula archetype character can be), ultimately being being caught by the police and exposed as Kira, the very person whom he's manipulating the police to catch. In addition, his contrast with L also creates one of the greatest rivalries in anime and manga. But where he truly shines and owns the show is in the final episodes, where he gets a massive villainous breakdown and delivers one of the most harrowing evil laughs ever.

My personal favorite is Black Lagoon's Rock, a former salaryman who joins a band of pirates and descends into moral darkness as he discovers how rotten Roanapur really is.

He also made good performances in the Gundam franchise, having voiced the original protagonist Amuro Ray (though now that Gundam UC is being dubbed in LA, I'll be expecting Johnny Yong Bosch to take him over if Sunrise plans on redubbing the UC series with one uniform cast), Quatre Rabera Winner of Wing, Dearka Elsman and Anuel Neider of SEED (both of whom are also departures from his usual mold since the former is deeper voiced amd not as temperamentap and the latter is just plain crazy), and his greatest performance in the entire franchise, Setsuna F. Seiei, who is his biggest departure from his usual mold, playing the stoic pilot who grew up as a child soldier fighting wars comparable to those in real life. If Sunrise ever wants to give some Gundam dubs to Vancouver then Brad should get at least one role.

Other noteworthy performances include Son Gohan (older) of the Ocean dub of DBZ (and Im expecting him to voice him in the future Ocean dub if DBZ Kai, as well as Android 19 due to Todd Haberkorn), Nightcrawler/Kurt Wagner from X-Men: Evolution, Brent Ernst/Slappy from Dead Rising 2, Jin Kazama from Street Fighter X Tekken (and I hope he reprises for Tekken 7), Ace from My Little Pony Tales, Harry Champ from Zoids New Century Zero, Takeshi Tomoe from Projects ARMS, and Keisaku Sato from Shakugan no Shana (especially when compared to Greg Ayres's version -sticks two middle fingers at Greg's version-).

My least favourite role from his is Transformers Energon's Kicker Jones, so much that he himself regretted that role. It's a shame since he could have done a good performance but it became wasted potential, just like that series. If Hasbro ever decides to give another series to Vancouver (-crosses fingers for a miniseries based off War For Cybertron and the cancelled TransTech series that will bridge G1 and the Aligned Continuity as one), Brad should get another shot at it. More likely I would like to see him appear in MLP:FIM or Dinotrux or Max Steel 2013 if they get another season.

If Funimation ever wants to branch out on their Broadcast Dubs venture (they have been thinking about it because their own studio cant contain all that forever lest they expand, which could be costly) then they should consider Vancouver a potential location to use, especially since the USD/CAD ratio is in the USD's favor (plus its cheaper than LA) and that Canada could get more games on its plate should the SAG-AFTRA strike happen, increasing Canada's demand for voiceover projects further (and thus increase the likeliness thay Brad could land a role)
said at 12:16 AM on Mon Dec 26 2016
While he hasn't been in that much prolific Vancouver projects, even compared to other Vancouver VAs, it is good he was cast in the dub of Kingdom, even if that dub was underwhelming, and in the Ratchet & Clank movie, even if that film was overall underwhelming.

This month I listened to his performance as Rock when I marathoned the Black Lagoon series. All I can say is that his performance as Rock is among his best roles, and in one of the best dubs ever made.

Happy 40th birthday Brad!

Happy Birthday Brad Swaile!

A true tour-de-force in the field of voice acting, not only is he one of the strongest performers in the entire Vancouver talent pool but also one of the greatest voice actors of all-time with an amazing acting range.

His performance as Light Yagami/Kira in Death Note is truly the role of a lifetime, Light being one of the most diabolical villain protagonists in all of anime. He's such a fascinating character, on the surface he's just your ordinary student who is one of Japan's best and brightest but of course he finds the death notebook and discovers he has the power to kill, he becomes a righteous knight templar trying to kill off the evil of the world but he lets his ego go into his head and declares himself the god of the new world, and is caught in a battle of wits with the police who just want to bring him to justice. What makes Light so excellent is that he gets caught up in the investigation and pretends to help the task force to catch Kira, the dynamic Light has with L is one of the greatest rivalries I've ever seen.

I think the best part of Brad's performance as Light was in the final episode. I won't give anything away but he has this emotional villainous breakdown where he gives one of the most chilling evil laughs I've ever heard, the acting in the final episode is phenomenal and Brad steals the show...which is technically his but still. It's because of this and so much more that Death Note is my favourite English dub of any anime.

A close runner up for second place would be his performance as Rokuro "Rock" Okajima in Black Lagoon, playing a fish out of water salaryman who joins up with the Black Lagoon delivery company and his sense of morality slowly begins to get darker and more cynical as he sees just how dark and rotten the underworld really is.

He also is fantastic in The Gundam Franchise having voiced so many major characters in the entire franchise including the original protagonist Amuro Ray, as well as Quatre Raberba Winner, Dearka Elsman, Auel Neider, (both of which appeared in the same series SEED Destiny) and my personal favourite role of his in Gundam Setsuna F. Seiei, who is such a radical departure from his usual roles (yes even Light) playing a gruff, stoic former child soldier. It was a really gutsy casting choice that I thought payed off in the end, he almost wasn't even cast as Setsuna because he had done the other roles before him but he won the producers over with his performance and I'm glad he did. I hope Brad gets more oppurunities in the Gundam franchise in the future either as the villain or the Char clone.

I also loved his performances as Lan Hikari, Nightcrawler/Kurt Wagner, Takeshi Tomoe, Son Gohan (Teen/Adult), Keisaku Sato, Maxwell, Nobunaga and Jin Kazama.

His performance as Kicker in Transformers Energon is my least favourite of his which is a shame since not only do I love Transformers but so does Brad Swaile too, I think he deserves another Transformer role because I know he can truly deliver a fantastic performance.
said at 6:39 AM on Mon Dec 26 2016
It's good to see that Brad is still active in the industry even if he isn't cast in as much as he used to.

I have to say his performance as Kuro in Kurozuka was excellent, it was cool to see him in another stoic protagonist role and his acting was on point. This also made it the 3rd time he shared a role with Mamoru Miyano too.

It was pretty cool to hear him in voice in an episode of Lolirock, even funnier his character's love interest was voiced by Shannon Chan-Kent....Hello again Light and Misa.

and while I haven't seen them, it's good to know he was in the animated Ratchet and Clank movie and had numerous roles in the dub for Kingdom.

I'm really hoping we start seeing an upswing for Brad Swaile really soon.

I'd love to hear him in My Little Pony Friendship is Magic, since the G2 version was where he got his voice acting start, and of course he definitely needs to be in World Trigger and Gintama somewhere in those dubs.

Happy Birthday Brad Swaile!

@Jerico that project is B-Daman Firebast and some other project (Brad mentioned at that same convention that he's voicing as much as 8 characters, and 2 have been voiced by him in Fireblast, so the other 6 would come from some other series).

One of the best, yet least prolific, male voice actors. I would love to hear him more often. He should come around to LA if he wants to continue voice acting; he would be guaranteed to be in everything.
said at 1:33 AM on Sun Jun 21 2015
@SNaG I guess, but he has as much as 5 LA equivalents to fill in his niches: Dave Wittenberg, Orion Acaba, Erik Kimerer, Todd Haberkorn and Johnny Yong Bosch.
said at 6:20 PM on Thu Nov 12 2015
@Domayv Orion and Dave don't do too much anime work these days, and I think a lot of people are getting tired of JYB being in everything.
said at 7:00 PM on Thu Nov 12 2015
@SNaG Orion's fairly new in Voice acting in general, having begun in the late 2000s. Also, he has done a handful of J-games so he will eventually be inclined to land in some more anime dubs in the future. Just look at Benjamin Diskin for instance.

In the case of Dave Wittenberg, he now does mostly prelay work and western games since the anime recession pretty much killed off his interest in anime and J-game dubs in general, plus there's the fact that he's union-only actor, and anime and J-games are largely nonunion (they also pay less compared to prelay and western games). In the dubbing community, he has now been succeeded by Grant George, Orion Acaba (Dave's closest successor), Sam Riegel, Erik Kimerer (I can describe him as a mixture of Johnny Yong Bosch and Spike Spencer) and Johnny Yong Bosch.

What I'm meaning to say is that if Brad Swaile were to go to LA for voiceover opportunities, not just for dubs but also prelay and western games, he would face fairly stiff competition. In the dubbing world, he would end up competing against Todd Haberkorn, Erik Kimerer and Johnny Yong Bosch. Prelay and western games are even tougher, as he would face competition from even more VAs, such as Yuri Lowenthal and Nolan North.

@Domayv So you're saying that all Brad can do is play it safe. Correct?
said at 1:48 PM on Fri Nov 13 2015
@Jared Delgado as of, kind off. plus with that inminent sag aftra strike against the game industry resulting in more games to Vancouver and others and less to LA, Brad could get some video games on his portfolio
said at 3:36 PM on Sun Nov 20 2016
@SNaG Totally embarrassed by this comment now that I've learned more of different VO locations.
said at 11:49 PM on Fri Nov 25 2016
@SNaG I'm assuming you thought that there was no more voice-over work in Vancouver, then? There's VO work there, but mostly, the companies havent had to use Vancouver, which is smaller, & on the other hand, *because* Vancouver is a smaller industry, imports/dub rates are higher...& contrary (or unbeknownst to) popular belief, dub budgets are lower than ever, due to JP companies pushing for higher profits & lower investment, so Ocean's out of the question.

As a side note, from what i have heard in Brad's interviews is that he does computer graphics part-time - he isnt *that* successful to make a living off of VO alone, & you'll notice that most of his stuff sounds like the same voice. Now, it's true that many actors who *are* very successful often disproportionately book the same sort of performances (Yuri Lowenthal, lookin at you), & folks like Patrick Warburton essentially turn their normal voice into a character..

..but more often than not, VAs branch out into capabilities with further range than their just their usual voice. In Vancouver alone, there's folks like IJC, RIC, Kazumi Evans, not to mention Drummond, Tabitha, Scott McNeil & the Dobson Bros. Plus, Brad really only booked dub jobs & stuff recorded w/those same ppl (X-Men Evolution was at Ocean under Willems), & he mentioned this specificly.
