So is she a member of FUNimation?
said at 6:10 PM on Wed Jan 27 2016
@Joel the Pokekid She's based in L.A (as far as I can tell) these days, but does show up from time to time in Funimation stuff.

@Joel the Pokekid Nobody is a "member" of FUNimation; they have established relations with the staff, nothing better-paying, & are either professional commercial or otherwise actors...& thus, continually end up working for FUNimation.

Some people, who want to do character VO, full-time, move on. (See the Bailey-Willinghams & Troy Baker for instance).

Acting is basically tied to WHO you know. You are lucky enough to work as you choose, but the work isn't consistent.

THAT's why the same people come back over & over again.

She's Jackie Ross? Well... colour me flabbergasted.

I am curious. How was this confirmed that Ashly Burch is Jackie Ross?
said at 1:54 PM on Mon Aug 4 2014
@mypetgoat I just thought. Ross's roles are here. Nothing of my doing.

My guess is the BTVA team found out about some of the following:

*a while back Ashly's brother let it slip on twitter that she voiced "the girl who keeps dying" in an anime. Then when a fan said "wasn't that Jackie Ross" he then wrote a tweet saying "never mind forget about it..." (as if trying to cover his mistake)

*Mayuri can be heard in Ashly's demo reel on her website

*from what I've learned a while back "Jackie Ross" moved shortly after recording Steins;Gate for a job in Seattle and a google search shows that Ashly Burch also spent some time in Seattle around the same time period.

At the Winter SacAnime this past weekend, Ashly said she was in Steins;Gate as Mayuri at a panel and when I asked if her the reasoning for her credit as Jackie Ross here was a SAG-thing, she said "Yeah, pretty much."

I'm guessing it's some loophole with the SAG limits on jobs. Kinda like how Steve Blum is occasionally credited as David Lucas.

@ValensHawke Steve Blum is a confirmed union actor (he's said it himself). Union rule 1 is "no stuff aside from union work", as that would weaken the collective bargaining of the union.

You can take one union job before joining, but after that you have to pay up & join if you want to do another. It's advised that you not join before you reach a certain skill level, as to avoid locking yourself into the big leagues..

(This is why certain known people, like Erica Mendez & Erika Harlacher, haven't been in anything union, btw)

Eventually, to remedy this, there became a status called "financial core", where one could pay union dues, partake in union projects, but technically not be part of the union. Basically, you have no say, but are technically *allowed* to do the big work.

Fi-core is allowed by SAG if one can prove that their non-union work pays for more than their union work.

This often happens when you're locked into the union, & end up starving due to having gotten greedy & taken a little union job before being ready for the big leagues.

People's conditions also change, & not everyone continues to booking big work.

Most actors would rather be fi-core actors than not actors at all! lol

*However*, it should be noted that in 2004, fi-core decisions were understood as PERMANENT (I'm not sure how this affected those who had become fi-core prior to 2004)

I would *assume* this is why relatively successful names, like RCS, Yuri Lowenthal, the Texodus 3, DC Douglas, Stephanie Sheh, Mona Marshall, & Liam O'Brien, have been able to work on non-union productions without fear - it is actually impossible for them to become union members, depending on the time of their fi-core decision.

I should tread with caution on this subject, but Mona Marshall's been in both big union & non-union productions since the 90's (she's been working since the '70's!) - half of the females in South Park, which was (rather famous for being) non-union, after MKB (RIP) & Koshiro from Digimon, which WAS union.

She's well-credited & open about all these roles, & continues occasionally doing non-union work, mostly anime (as, like Blum, she has good friends that work in dubbing)

Steve Blum IIRC worked on a few union anime dubs before Digimon, but I guess he's been union long before 2005, just trying to pay his bills with "off-the-card" work. 2005-06 was a very difficult time for him, as he prematurely quit his job after booking a 7-Eleven commercial.

He was credited as David Lucas on, & generally denied working on, the Bebop series, though he was credited & open on the movie, which was union, & sent letters to fans as David Lucas tactfully advising people not to inquire about these things, as they would endanger his friend Steve.

This happened with plenty of VA's back then, but I can't assume the same situation for everybody - I can only say so for Blum because of how open he's become about it, & Steve Staley uses the pseudonym "Steve Cannon" in many non-union jobs.

The same could not be said for Ashly Burch, who is closer to, like, the members of this site, & got her first (credited, at least) union job AFTER Steins;Gate's dub, not to MENTION how open she's been with jobs like AoT & the Persona dancing games...

Either SAG-AFTRA doesn't notice, doesn't care, or maybe her union status was eligible for doing the work - she simply didn't wish to be associated with dubbing (yes, this is a thing), but that...I cannot confirm.

The moderators generally frown upon this discussion, & I've said enough already, but...

..I do wonder WHAT changed from 2011 & 2014 that she became open to talking about her non-union dubbing work?
