Happy birthday AWL. You are Yukiko, and the dub for Dead Leaves is awesome.

Happy Birthday Amanda Winn Lee. A very lovely voice and great work as Yukiko, Rei, Etna, and Magnolia Arch.

So glad she got a role (or reprise her role?) as Magnolia in Bravely Second. And she sounds amazing!

Is Yukiko the only role she gets called back for? I thought Brina Palencia and Michelle Ruff were great replacements for Rei and Etna. But why?

@Unknownsage13 I do believe that, from what I've read, "it was heavily implied that AWL did not deem it worth her time to pay for a plane ticket to Texas for an anime dub".

Not necessarily in terms of content, but of course, pay. & I dont mean to be too personal, but while Spike may reply/like most of the stuff he's sent on social media, AWL can be quite...pre-occupied, putting it nicely. & she's been known to be more like Misato IRL. (It should also be stated that she had to take care of her ill child, which is likely also a major factor.)

Everyone has different preferences/temperaments regarding these things. Norman Reedus has millions of followers, yet he's an incredibly nice guy & was willing to take lower pay to voice Daryl in that...mediocre TWD game. & he also follows back, which is incredibly cool.

I'd comment on Etna, but I havent seen/played Disgaea. As for why she doesn't "get" new roles, it may likely be that she doesnt even audition for anime dubs (the way that 99% of VA's don't), because of course, as Joshua Seth said "it pays rather unfairly" (paraphrasing).

We *could* do better, but from what TheBlackPaladin said, the Japanese companies are pushing for higher profits, which makes sense that Stephanie Sheh says "there's a lower bar nowadays, it's consistently worse, & we're all just getting used to it". Budgets are even lower than they were before, & I guess it has to do with the anime industry back home.

I at least commend Josh & Steph for caring enough to point this out, rather than just ignoring the subject & quitting it anyway (which they totally have the right to). It at least gives fans an example of "the struggle" (lol) that their particularly niche fandom's industry faces.

Its tragic that Amanda isn't in more anime and video game dubs one would think that she would be cast in Studiopolis dubbing productions like Sailor Moon and Naruto Shippuden or any Bang Zoom dub really. Amanda is certainly talented enough and is a 15 year voice veteran in this medium. I suppose it comes down to exclusivity that many casting directors tend to show when it comes to casting for their productions. Its bad enough that the talented voice veteran Tristan MacAvery hasn't worked in voice over in 13 years hopefully Amanda is able to grab more roles in the future because her presence is greatly needed in more dubs.

There's a bittersweet irony to her voicing Rei considering the stormcloud that's followed her ever since Devil Hunter Yohko. As crude and uncouth as this may sound I feel there's a dynamic, almost ethereal beauty to this in hindsight.

Happy Birthday, Mrs. Winn-Lee.

I know she's probably THE most controversial anime voice actress of all time (if not, she's definitely up there), and yes, I know all about her wild (usually alcohol-induced) antics in public at anime cons, as well as some of the stuff she has said in commentaries, but she does NOT deserve the outright disgusting treatment some fans have given to her for the past 15+ years (even after her child became very ill).

My point: she said so herself that all the fan crap has pretty much motivated her to retire from anime voice acting, explaining why she mostly just does video games now. The new Persona anime is going to be her first anime job in close to a decade. Let's hope she sticks around, and that the fans won't continue to give this poor woman hell.

@PurpleWarrior13 Really? I didn't know fans there were being that crappy to her. I heard her say that fans could generally be a little disrespectful towards her and act like they were entitled to her attention. Not the level of harassment you're speaking of...

@PsychicVoiceSpy This thread (and the community on this message board) sums things up nicely (especially the person posting the picture): http://forum.evageeks.org/thread/4665/Amanda-Winn-Lees-Commentary-of-Evil/

Someone also asked Amanda at her recent Ohayocon Q&A panel "What Gainax and Anno thought about [her] screwing up End of Evangelion".

Those are just examples. This kind of stuff has been going on since the late 90s...

@PurpleWarrior13 Wow, people whining and criticizing someone... among other things, for something that happened over ten years ago... That's fandoms for ya, especially the segment of the NGE fanbase people can't stand. Thanks for sharing that.

Speaking of Video Games i remember her from the game Oni as Konoko, she had major dialogue in that game. Wikipedia states that she was interested in reprising her role as Rei in Evangelion but in 2009 the Funimation stated that Brina Palencia would be doing the role.

@Gatch It's still not clear why Rei was recast. Amanda had returned to voice acting by that point. She seems to suggest that FUNimation simply didn't want to work with her.

@PurpleWarrior13
My guess is Mike McFarland is simply obsessed with Brina Palencia. He probably swells with pride every time he gives her a big role. I'm sure he still loves the praise he gets for casting Vic Mignogna as Edward Elric.

Though I honestly don't care that much for Brina or Vic. Plenty of better VAs I can think of.

I've always thought McFarland as an overrated director. He usually disappoint me with his casting picks for leads since it's almost always the same individuals. For women it's almost always one of his main ladies in One Piece or Alexis Tipton who seems to be his new favorite gal to spoil. Clinkenbeard as Hana in Wolf Children was one the least surprising casting decisions of the decade...
